Album Cover'd!

Postby Aleril » Fri Jan 04, 2008 8:37 pm UTC

Can you guys get into this more than anywhere else did? :o

1 - Go to wikipedia. Hit "random".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first random wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.

2 - Go to Random quotations:
http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.

3 - Go to flickr and click on "explore the last seven days"
http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/
Third picture, no matter what it is ((SFW of course)), will be your album cover.

4 - Use photoshop or similar to mix it all up. Host it and bring it here.

This sounds potentially amusing and/or interesting. Not so much on the first go though:

The image and title that I got looked like they were from an album cover already. Not much photoshopping at all; it just fell into place.

Can't play today, don't have any helpful software on this PC (will wait till I'm back at work) but fun game. Some of these really work!

Side note: this is the first random Wikipedia article I got. I dare anyone to use it as an actual band-name (in this game or irl):

Hehe, this is fun.

I imagine some cheap but strangely appealing synthie-trance-new-wave mix that reminds you of the 80s, Maria João and Pink Floyd.
It's one of the bands that you carefully exclude from shuffle when you know that you'll have guests who you want to have a good opinion of your musical taste. You always hesitate for a moment when the album's title catches your eye, but eventually you click 'ok' and try to forget about it.

This is fun! I like the idea of writing short descriptions for the albums.

This one is the newest from the German alternative rock band Bettolle. Just like in their previous (debut) album "One System Down", they once again protest against the capitalist system, with songs like "'Nother Day", "Red Money" and the titular "Your Rightful Place In The World".

This is addicting! I hit a very fortunate combo of quote and pic this time.

This is the long-awaited album by Israeli artist Yitzhak Ben Ner, on which he poetically explores the view cats must have on mankind.

You can find lots and lots of cool fonts here.

Also, I usually copy the text layer, put the copy behind the text layer, paint its text black (or white), blur it and then play with that new layer's opacity (set it very low, 20-35%). This makes the letters stand out more from the background (quite noticeable on my last covers green text, but this technique is used on most of my covers here).

Couldn't resist another one:

Again, excuse the crummy PS skills. I cheated a bit with the title (6-7 words). But it was too good not to use.

I'm also not 100% sure about the typeface I used for the title; I'd have liked to use something resembling an old malfunctioning typewriter, but I don't have anything like that at the moment.

This whole process is sooo good for making covers for mix discs...

Edit: Bad Penny are an emo-punk band and this is their first album, put out by themselves and sold at gigs.

That cover is very believable (as are most covers here, by the way - funny how the brain wants to see connections between randomly picked objects).
You can find all kinds of free typewriter fonts here.

As I can't resist either, here's my latest from the Swiss electrosynth band Utenbach:

I have hundreds of fonts, but many of your fonts seem to have color effects and filters, and I don't know how to use almost any of the advanced features of PS.

EDIT: Wow, I don't have THOSE fonts! :)

Me neither, I use the GIMP. This is probably not the place for PS tutorials, but here's a few pointers. Add some text to an otherwise empty (transparent) layer in one of your hundreds of pretty fonts. Duplicate the layer. Do stuff to the bottom layer, like changing its color, position, blurriness, opacity, scale - or any combination of these. Experiment. Try subtle and not so subtle changes. Try different fonts - as you can see, I love slightly eroded fonts, they let the bottom layer shine through in other places than just the surrounding border (for instance, the above Utenbach is black on a slightly blurred, less opaque white copy of the same text, which gives it just a bit of extra oomph).

BTW, is it allowed to change the image in any way? Cropping, filtering, color/contrast changes, borders, new elements (glints, stars, boxes, whatever), retouching? Or is all we're allowed to do adding a few lines of text (with effects), (what I've done up to now)?

And if we're going to vote, then what is most important? I mean, we can't judge based on the text or the image themselves, as these are completely random and out of the posters control. So what's left? The fonts used? The composition? The description?
We could also, instead of voting, make it compulsory to critique or comment on the previous entry/entries. Give some constructive feedback.

I think I win the "WTF image" award. Sorry for the crappy fonts, I rarely use Gimp and have no cool fonts installed.

The Birmingham Tornado is an alternative rock band from Sacramento, California. Their careless drug abuse is apparent in this latest album, which is distinguished by its incoherent lyrics and use of "unconventional" instruments. Ask What's For Lunch is the story of their binge drinking, partygoing, substance abusing lifestyle.

My wife wants to know if the reason that these look so much like real album covers is a) the human brain makes connections when it thinks it has to, or b) album covers suck so much, these look perfectly rational.

I call failure on this.

A horrid band name and a watermarked image! /sigh.

I did figure out a crazy new pixilation-type effect though, so not a total loss. I figure any band that names themselves after a financial industry ISO standard has an odd sense of what looks good.

Also, I figure some measure of manipulation is fair on the source image. After all, the rules say "mix it all up" :-)

Unfortunately KKZX's new album What Happens Next? has suffered from a refusal by many mainstream radio stations and TV stations to play what is considered by some to be "Anti American" music full of hatred directed at the post 9-11 loss of individual freedom.

A surprising change from their usual cyberpunk-inspired techno, PureVideo's newest album ...Enough to Suit Some People focuses on the gritty reality behind the classic "american dream." Most acclaimed on this album is the hit song "Suffering From a Mental Illness," about the contradiction in trying to fit social norms and think freely at the same time.

I like this one... if this would exist, I would consider buying it :)

This album is by the 'University of Central Punjab' and it is titled 'Sit here by me'. mainstream radio was not too interested in world music, especially if it comes from a place which is in the news too much already.
