Postby arbivark » Mon Feb 25, 2008 3:14 pm UTC

Moved from 'fuck grapefruit' thread.
Glad to see others were reminded of nolan-type charts.
Maybe a topic for a separate thread, but how many different fruits can you list?
I have trouble coming up with more than 100.
(Rules/suggestions: apples count as one fruit, so macintosh, rome, red atrocious, still just one. but there are lots of different kind of berries; loganberries dewberries mulberries =3.)

I even resisted the urge to check the comic again before trying. There's no point in trying to pass off any on wery's list and say I thought of them myself, so I'll just add to it. (wery's list alphabetized, mine added in bold inbetween in aphabetical order):

apple
banana
blackberry
blueberry
cherry
coconut (not a fruit but a nut)
date
fig
grape
grapefruit
guava
kiwi
kumkwuat
lemon
lime
lychee
nectarine
mango
melon
orange
passion fruit / grennadilla
peach
pinapple
plum
pluot
raspberry
strawberry
tomato
watermelon

Hermaj, I thought the point was to NOT bring up specific kinds? Also, avocado is still a nut not a fruit.

...Err, I didn't? I only added the stuff in bold, which did not in fact include avocado or varieties of the same fruit, except where I introduced regional terms on the same line, not as a separate entry. Also, avocado is the ripened ovary of the avocado tree, thus making it a fruit.

Sorry, that is what I was referring to and then the avocado as a seperate point, which I was really convinced was a nut but I see from wiki and other semi-reliable sources I'm an idiot.

That wasn't bolded in my post. As I've already said, I only wrote the things that were in bold, after copying the list from the previous post.

EDIT: Edited to put a comma in. Comma! How I had forsaken you.

No, I bolded it to show what bit I was talking about, but I see now it was one post above yours that had made that statement, not you hermaj. Sorry. This is what you get for sneakily reading the fora inbetween working.

Still, no-one's picked up on the contradictory nature of this and in fact "melon"'s been removed, which I'm still wondering about.

Meh.

Sorry again for the misunderstanding though.

Bitter. Very bitter.

Your best bet would probably be any local farmer's market, or small fruit/veggie stand set up in front of a gas station by some local farmer or gardener. If you're lucky, that is. Otherwise I really don't know. Some grocery stores may carry them, like Harry's Farmer's Market or maybe some co-ops.

Yea, crabapples are really only good for making tangy applesauce, and even then its usually best to just use a strong 'normal' apple.

Moo: it seems pretty sensible to me to leave apple as one item, while breaking down melon into specific kinds. Apple is already a hell of a lot more specific than melon, and I think having the latter on the list as one item would be a lot like having "citrus" as one item.

Now, if someone started breaking into specific varieties of watermelon, for instance, I think you'd have a point.
Unless stated otherwise, I do not care whether a statement, by itself, constitutes a persuasive political argument. I care whether it's true.

OK, that makes enough sense. Initially, I was only asking since I am not that well versed in the intracies of English melon names anyway (in Afrikaans they're melons. Green melons and orange melons. Just melons). My stupidity made it get out of context.

I've never heard of them being used for applesauce, just apple jelly. But, they're firm enough for cooking or baking, so they probably would make an awesome applesauce, if you sweetened it enough (or added enough spice) to cancel out the bitterness, or make it as less bitter as possible.

Sorry for the confusion on 'melon'- I used strikethrough, but apparently that didn't get copied. I just wanted it to be clear what was happening.

But... yeah, don't eat crabapples. They're hard and sour and mealy. Even the squirrels leave them to rot. They're most useful as a source of pectin, if you're trying to make home jelly. You need a lot of them, though.

I already went through the whole cucumber & zuccini being veggie line, struck them out and then put the back in, correcting myself. They are all botanical fruits, albeit not culinary ones. Since culinary fruits are vaguely defined at best, the botanical definition is more consistent.

I hadn't heard of a chayote but a brief visit to Wiki tells me that they and choko are pretty much the same thing, so yes.

Does pomelo differ from grapefruit? Clearly it does. This is interesting; in Afrikaans we use the word "pomelo" to refer to regular grapefruit; obviously quite misleadingly. You learn something new every day.

It's definately not your normal applesauce, but when I made it, it was about 1/2 crabapple, 1/2 sweet apple (I forget what variety exactly), caramalized sugar (lots!), and a load of cinnamon. It turned out very tasty, and certainly tangy, however by using so much sugar, it was analagous to Thai spicy versus Mexican spicy where normal tangy applesauce is the mexican variety.

All of the things you listed as veggies are "really" botanical fruits.
