((On Christmas Eve/Day, I'll be finishing this chapter and introducing the next story element - and believe me when I tell you that you'll all want to have dealt with these elements before the next ones come along. The shifting buildings should give you a clue.
The Gardener may also be involved.))

((Matthias, you might as well join our group. Just come in at the end of this post I guess.))

James

Luthen wrote:At the station, James was lucky enough to find an old protest picket, which was oddly blank, but James was more concerned with its possibility as a splint for Michael.
"Michael, I'm afraid this is probably going to hurt but you're going to have to let go of your arm." James started wrap a bandage around Michael's arm and the piece of wood. James was concentrating too much on his bandaging to notice the light flicker with every wrapping. That done, he got out a triangular bandage and fashioned a sling for Michael's arm so his other arm would be free. "Okay, that should do it. Before we go upstairs to the supermarket I think both of you need to rest," James turned to Kelly, "Now, how did you hurt yourselves?"

James paused, realised just how much of a jerk he was being, “No, don’t answer that. We can talk later. Just stay here, I’ll go grab some ice for your ankle." With a wave he walked up the escalator.

On his way to the supermarket, he still couldn’t stand the eeriness of its emptiness and continued to feel that something, or someone, was watching him. He was also seriously disturbed by what he hadn’t noticed on his previous trek. All the signs were blank, not like they’d never been painted, but where the shapes and backgrounds suggested there should be words, they weren’t. Also there were weird little details. All the chairs and table in the food court were perfectly arranged, but the station had been a dump with trash in the corners.

There was a noise and James spun around, “Who’s there?”. Only silence answered him. James stood there like an idiot for a few moments before realising there was something in his hand. Caught by surprise he dropped it before getting a good look at it. As soon as it left his hand, it disappeared. What was that?

As James wandered through the centre, he now couldn’t stop thinking about what had just happened. He knew he hadn’t picked anything up and was sure it wasn’t just a figment of his imagination. It had too much weight. Maybe the same thing happened when I tried to get out of the station?. As he walked, James continued to try and resummon the mysterious object but all he got was a general feeling of foolishness.

The supermarket was like any other, though bigger that most back in Melbourne. All the food on the shelves seemed okay and judging by the best before dates, it might have been shelved the day before. How come the labels still have their writing but the signs don’t? James wondered to himself. He almost got the feeling that the whole place was only half thought out.

Having collected his bounty of frozen peas, and a couple similarly frozen but sweeter items, James headed back to Michael and Kelly. A few moments later, James turned a corner and heard a noise behind him again. He whirled to face it, and found himself holding the object again. Trying to pretend that he had expected what seemed to be a perspex rod to suddenly appear in his hand, James called out “Who’s there?”

((Matthias, feel free to reply to the last question, if you decide not to, then James can just continue to be paranoid.))

EDIT: Just revised so I took my bag with me.

((Peter had seen the fighting between the Gardener and Tig.))

Sai

Sai heard someone shout out in English "Who's there?". Looking at where the sound came from, he was startled in a way that caused the lights to flicker. They always seemed to flicker when he walked.

"Who are you?" Sai asked what appeared to be a teenager holding a knife. Sai looked at the knife, then looked at the young man.

It would be absolutely fine if you joined in, we're always looking for more players. You may want to skim over the last few pages to get an idea of what's happening. Just PM me, Vieto, or Dashiva (the mods) with any questions. I might send you a Pm later to summarize what's happened so far, since reading through that mass of posts will probably not be very fun for you.

James
James had retrieved the peas for Kelly and was on the way back when he heard a noise again. He turned to face it and was holding something again. It seemed to be a clear perspex rod and his hand was tingling. James was astonished to see that an older asian man, Chinese?, was standing there. The man replied to James' shout with, "I do not know who you are looking for, but I am here."

Surprised, James' mouth replied before his brain thought, "#@&! Where'd you come from?". Judging by the man's face it wasn't the best first impression.

Suddenly James' body felt really heavy and he couldn't help but lean forward, hoping that he wouldn't fall on his face. Just as he knew he was going to fall, the weight lessened. Did he cause that? He stood up and the man asked him to drop his "weapon". James glanced at the rod, tried to memorise the tingling feeling and replied to the strange man, "Okay, I'll drop it but it'll probably disappear." He let go and as soon as it left his hand, the rod dissappeared.

The man's face didn't twitch when the rod dissappeared, showing the massive self control he had. "You may call me Sai, have you seen any people in your time in this city? I was attacked by a dog, then a boy and a girl appeared. It went dark and when the light came back, all three had disappeared."

James tried to mimic Sai's implacablity but feared he'd failed. Sai didn't seem like the most friendly person and James felt that Kelly and Michael wouldn't want to meet him. "My name's James, and sorry I haven't run into anyone so far." Technically, that could be true. "I was just collecting some stuff before going out to search for others. Would you like to come with me?"

After a moment's thought Sai replied, "Yes, there is safety in numbers."

Noticing how light Sai's clothing James suggested, "Maybe you should grab some warmer clothes. I'm sure no one's going to be upset if you take something."

Sai almost grimaced, "I will not lower myself to that. I will leave some money. Stay here." Sai walked off. James knew that he didn't want to take Sai to Michael and Kelly but decided he wanted them to be able to find him. He ripped the corner of the peas packet and hid the hole in his palm.

Sooner than expected, Sai returned with a full coat with a noticable bulge under it. "If you are ready we should go."

James, hoping that Sai hadn't got a gun or question carrying a packet of peas, answered, "Yeah, we should." As they walked out into the street, James tried to covertly leave a trail for Michael and Kelly, How very Hansel and Gretel.

This was the first time that James had been out of the mall, and was overwhelmed by the lights and buildings. It was like a cross of Tokyo and New York, with far more neon lights than James thought would be effective.

((Surely that defies the entire point of the Anywhere idea. They're not player characters, and can therefore be controlled by anyone. There's no reason why only mods should be allowed to control NPCs, unless there's major plot involved. In this case, there isn't. Plus, having only mods control NPCs makes dialog quite a bit harder.))

Sorry, forgot, have edited. Chrismclegless, I for some reason understood the rules to agree with you but I was wrong (yay for illiteracy):
The Rules wrote:- No-one but myself and the game mods are allowed to control the NPCs at any time
- Each character must be an original one based on yourself - no characters from pre-existing mediums (including text, radio, television, movies or any other form of multimedia) can be used
- No more than 3 different people can choose the same ability (with the exception of 4 for telekinesis) - sorry, but not all of you can have pyrokinesis
- NPC abilities and player abilities chosen are seperate - an NPC with flight does not mean only 2 players can then choose flight, as NPC abilities are outside the norm. NPCs may also have 2 or 3 abilities at once
- NPCs can either aid or hinder your progress through the story - certain actions will make them allies, whilst others will turn them into combatants

the other two mods if they want to do anything with Sai/John/anyone else they've done, so if they have major plot planned they'll need to assert control.
At about 10pm tonight (Sydney Time) I'll be ending the chapter and introducing the next story element - hopefully that'll get some more people back into the game))

I'll let it slide this time, namely because I like the new addition to my sig. However, I will dictate what Sai wears. He gets a fur hat, sorta like this, and a winter coat of similar style. I do have a plot idea for him, but it's kinda vague. Also, I'll be gone for a week, starting Sunday. Luthen, if you want to control Sai for that time, please pm me, and I'll give you instructions. Re: Mega-City Heroes - An Anywhere USA Spinoff

Postby Dashiva33 » Thu Dec 25, 2008 11:41 am UTC

((It's funny you should mention time passing))

Across the entirety of the Mega-City, white-clad men appeared from inside the fluctuating buildings. Entropy, for that was what was taking place with the structure of the world, was getting worse.
Lights throughout the mega-city dimmed momentarily, and all those standing fell to the ground unconscious as the white-clad men grew in number.

Outside one of the apartment buildings, Harvey lay collapsed in a heap as the building disintegrated further. Nearby, Peter and Nick fell to the ground in a similar fashion.

Below the now-motionless forms of Chris and Callum, Dash was sprawled along the length of the bottom of the staircase, his limbs at odd angles.

James and Sai lay near each other, completely out of it.

A distance away, Kells and MaJ were each draped along a table and chair respectively as the dim light continued.

Throughout the Mega-City, engaged in various battles, conflicts and escapes, lay the unconscious bodies of Rockwell, Christmas, The Gardener, Zak...anyone within the city, except for the white-clad men, was now removed from action.

The white-clad men worked hard, trying to fix the problem. No matter how hard they tried, the entropy could not be stopped by them alone. They needed help, and it was obvious there was only one place they could find it.

END OF CHAPTER THREE

Chapter Four - Double Jeopardy

Two days have elapsed - every spot will have one of these NPCs

Name: One, Two, Three, Four or Five (depending on location)
Function: White-clad envoys of whoever, or whatever, is controlling the mega-city
Powers: Flight, plus the following:
One - Metal mimicry (located near Rockwell, Zak, Christmas, Gardener, etc)
Two - Regeneration (located near Harvey, Peter and Nick)
Three - Invisibility (located near MaJ and Kells)
Four - Transmutation/alchemy (located near James and Sai)
Five - Cryokinesis (located in the center of the city, target unspecified)

Harvey

Outside the still-melting apartment, Harvey slowly got to his feet. The sun had risen, meaning he'd been out for at least a few hours. The side he'd lain on hurt with pins and needles as if he hadn't used it for days.
Standing a short distance away from him was a figure clad all in white, their facial features obscured. There was what looked like a gun in the figure's hand, raised towards Harvey's forehead.
Fear gripped him.
"Oh shit," he said quietly to himself.

(( It just occured to me that a map of the city might be useful... at least what 'quarter' people are in, as you've seemingly just divided it up.))

Rocky opened his eyes. He was on the bitumen, about four feet from the lamp post where he'd summoned his bow, which now seemed to have gone missing. Hardly surprising. He guessed his unconscioussness had made him lose concentration and it'd just come unmade. Oh well, he could always summon it again if he needed it. He dragged himself to his feet. He had no idea how long he'd been out, but randomly passing out in the street wasn't a good sign. He needed to find the others. He headed off in search of Christmas, who despite being probably dangerous, was at least someone to talk to. He turned and started down the street.

Chris stirred, his head bleary. Standing up, he saw Callum lying on the ground, curled up in a ball. No-one else seemed to be around - Nick, Peter and Dash had apparently left before they woke up. Shaking Callum awake, Chris looked out the window in astonishment. Several of the buildings seemed to have collapsed, and there was an odd man in white clothing disappearing around a corner. "Callum, wake up. Something's gone wrong. Everyone's gone, and the world seems to be falling apart." Chris had a sudden thought. Quickly, he tested his power. "At least our powers still work though."

((Sorry I did that one-post-vanish thing. I don't really have an excuse for it, I've just been blowing all my time playing CoD 4. I'll try and do better, but I won't make any promises--the Throne Story crowd can attest to how unreliable I am when it comes to posting. Also: Merry Christmas.))

James took a deep, steadying breath. Not because it had any genuine psychological effect, but because it seemed like the right thing to do in the situation. Besides which, a part of him noted, he oddly didn't need steadying. He'd obviously been plucked from his reality and dropped into another one, but--for the moment, at least--he was ridiculously calm about it. Perhaps that was a side effect of reading so many sci-fi and fantasy books as a kid--among other oddities such as an attraction to pointy ears and blue skin, his mind was better equipped than 'mundanes' to deal with something like this.

On the other hand, maybe he'd just rolled a 20 on a save versus insanity.

This last thought split his face in a snicker. Hope I'm not in the Arcane Fortress; I'll be down to a negative wisdom score before I even meet the BBEG.

He was probably mixing gaming metaphors, but he'd never played Call of Cthulhu so maybe that was okay. Regardless, the point remained--in its own way--valid: bad things would probably start happening to him the longer he stayed in this place, so he'd better be prepared for them. A sobering thought; the snicker melted away, but the calm remained. An old familiar question arose: what would Gordon Freeman do in this situation?

Max out on medkits and ammo, and shoot anything that moves.

...Maybe WWGFD wasn't a perfect philosophy. Still, gathering supplies would be a good start--and his goosebumped arms and chattering teeth demanded that the first thing should be a jacket. He made to turn away from the sign, but a thought struck him. Setting down his backpack, he reached in and pulled out one of the pens in the rearmost pocket. He'd discovered a few weeks ago that if he pulled the nib off of this kind of pen, it turned into a marker; he performed this nifty operation, and scrawled a message on the blank sign in his legible but intensely non-artistic handwriting: "Jimmie was here."

He put the cap back on the marker, and put it into one of the pen holders on his uniform. Shouldering his backpack, he walked away from the sign and down the sidewalk, peering into the windows of the streetside buildings.

He noted that all of them, despite being mostly lit, seemed uninhabited. Not abandoned, though, and that had an interesting effect on his idle thought processes. If it had been a bombed-out apocalypse city, the 'suspension of reality' thing would have been even more believable, though it might have put his will save under the mark. As it was, though, he kept expecting--or at least hoping, in a small way--to see people going about their day. Closing up shop, walking home: something, anything. But there was nobody. It was a perfectly functional city that was just empty. Very Twilight Zone. He probably would have preferred apocalypseburg, if it weren't for the obvious zombie problems.

About a half a block down the road, he found what appeared to be a designer clothing shop. Great, I landed right on the strip.

Testing the handle, he found the door unlocked, and walked in, looking around and calling out "Hello?" a few times as if the shop was simply getting ready to close. When nothing but the expected silence answered, he sighed again and let the door close behind him.

About fifteen minutes later, Jimmie looked at himself in the mirror; a fox-fur jacket and tweed trillby didn't exactly go with ACU pants, but so what? At least it was warm. And trillbies were awesome, so there. His uniform top and hat lay discarded on a bench nearby, and Jimmie shouldered his backpack once more, looking at a piece of loot he'd found while "shopping." It was one of those emergency radios with a hand-crank to charge it and a flashlight built in. Embarrassing memories of trying to wire a USB port into a similar radio and frying both it and an iPod as a result turned his cheeks red for a moment while he fiddled with the tuning knob. He frowned; nothing but static, but there were a few places that might have been stations broadcasting through some bad interference. He thought for a moment. This building was at least four or five stories tall; maybe he would get better reception on the roof?

A moment's hesitation at the stairwell was apparently unwarranted; the fire alarm didn't go off when he opened the door, unless it was a silent alarm. Even if it was, at least he'd find somebody else in the city, so that was something. He began climbing the stairs. One flight; two flights; three flights.

*huff, huff* Balrog of Morgoth, I'm out of shape. I guess not working out for eight months and pigging out on dad's cooking isn't exactly Exalted material. I need to lose some weight.

As these thoughts passed, Jimmie felt an odd sensation; to quote the cliche, it was like a great weight was lifting off of his shoulders. And his back. Everywhere, really. He paused in his steps a moment. Huh. Maybe I'm not that bad-off after all. Hell, it's only a few stairs anyway, of course I wouldn't get that out of breath. Get some self-esteem, man, you've been doing that 'fit to fight' thing for years now.

A couple of flights later, Jimmie opened a door and stepped out onto the roof. Taking a deep breath of cool night air, he unclipped the radio from his belt and extended the antenna. Before he could repeat the "look for human life" process, however, something caught his eye. He walked to the edge of the roof, and peered out across the city.

Some of the buildings were flickering. It was like they were rearranging themselves; sinking into the ground slowly, or merging together, or changing shape completely.

"...The hell? What is this, Dark City?" Jimmie wondered out loud, the words ringing with wonder.

A moment later, it wasn't just the buildings; the lights across the city flickered and dimmed. At the same time, the speaker on his radio emitted a loud burst of static. Jimmie glanced down at it, and suddenly there were two of them. Actually, there were two of everything.

A moment later, both of everything vanished, as Jimmie blacked out and collapsed on the rooftop.

James
James face wasn't very comfortable. His cheek was pressed into the bitumen of the road and his pack was digging into his spine. He wouldn't deliberately be lying like this so he kept his eyes closed and pretended to be still asleep. Now, why am I lying on the ground? What was I doing...? He remembered leaving the mall with Sai but then it was all blank. Running out of things to consider with his eyes shut, James decided to risk sneaking a look around.

He opened his eyes a fraction. He could see Sai lying a metre or so away but couldn't tell if he was awake or not. More importantly James could see a pair of impossibly white boots. James closed his eyes and could only think, I hope this isn't going to hurt.

Sai

Sai quickly recovered from the fall caused by the odd vibrations of the city. Looking up, he saw a man in white standing over the American, James he called himself, and appeared to be about to kick him. Sai thought for a moment. He wasn't particularly fond of the American, but he figured he might need him. Also, Sai was a man of honour, and thought the idea of kicking a downed man, even an American, in the face was dishonourable.

In chinese, Sai shouted:
"Stop, don't hurt him. It would be a dishonourable thing to do."

Peter

Peter was knocked off his feet, but was able to telekinetically brace himself to prevent a heavy impact. Looking around, he saw a man dressed in white nearby. Looking at where the two fighting guys were, he saw another white man.

Peter glanced at the man near him, and saw the gun in his hand, pointed at Harvey. Thinking fast, Peter mentally flung the gun out of the man's hand, into the wall. Peter got up, glanced to make sure Nick was ok, and made sure he still had the bat. Peter was nervous, and was only able to shout out the stereotypical "Who are you?" at the man.

John

John woke up with a thud, landing a floor down from where his bed was. ((he fell through the floor)). His head was still sore, but he had his shotgun. Aching, he got up, and picked up the shotgun, before realizing that the trigger was melted. "Dang nabbit!" he shouted. He then remembered his power, and with a "Bang", he shot at his trigger, releasing it, causing a shot to go off near his foot. He checked the rifle, it had 12 shots left.

He began to walk. He was a drinking man, so the fact that he hadn't had a drink in a while made his walk that of a stupor, and his temper was worsened. He was furious at how bad his day had become, and if anyone had seen him, his blood-shot eyes would have been a big clue that he was on the brink of going insane.

James

James heard someone shout something, presumably Sai shouting in Chinese, and opened his eyes to see the white boot much closer than it was last time he checked. Quite fairly, James didn't want a boot to the face. This somehow triggered a similar tingling feeling to earlier on his forehead and the air between his head and the boot seemed to solidify. Okay James, freak out once you're standing up. Careful to keep the barrier going between him and the man in white, James stood up.

"Who are you and what do you want?" James asked in the steadiest voice he could manage.

Name: Gerard
Age: 18
Power: Energy Kinesis (I can bend pure energy, in multiple forms, I am of moderate expertise in this, meaning I can shoot energy with it and use it as a crude (not very precise) form of telekinesis (which can be used on myself)
Character bio: I'm the fourth in my family (and third generation) to inherit these abilities. My older brother is the prodigy. He can manipulate virtually anything. He has been doing this for far longer then I have, and his natural skill is greater then mine as well.

NPC:

Name: Rachel
Age: 18
Power: Power Conduit (can temporarily from willing candidates transfer one persons power through her to another person, its length of time depends on how powerful the transfered power is, she cannot use it to transfer her own power or a power to herself). If a person dies with someone elses powers, it is unknown if the living person gets them back, but if the giver of powers dies without their power, the reciever keeps the power, although they lose a great amunt of the natural aptitude (she passes the power as well as the knowledge of how to use it)
Character bio: Coveted by supervillains because of the fact that the giver's death results in the reciever keeping it permanently, she has been on the run from them since age 12. She keeps her power to herself, and dislikes using it because of others envy, despite it being a way to help others greatly if used correctly. As such her skill with her power is quite underdeveloped.

NPC:

Name: Ax
Age: ?? (looks in his lower 20's in his chosen state)
Power: Body is made of liquid metal, not unlike the terminator from terminator 2, however he cannot replicate quite as well, and cannot imitate inanimate objects very well, he can make sharp weapons on his arms.
Character bio: He is a mystery for now
Spoiler:
A good plan violently executed today is better then a perfect plan executed next week.

Two things- one, this topic is dead. The mod hasn't been online in months. Secondly, you couldn't make NPC's, even if it wasn't dead. Actually, Dashiva Made me a mod, so I might try to get this back up running, though I don't have the PM he sent me about that, so I'm not sure.
