The Modern Dungeon.

Postby Chfan » Sat Jan 17, 2009 2:52 pm UTC

I figure a play-by-post RPG is necessary.

Whoever could stand to join the game stands in a Studio Hallway. There are tens of doors on either side of the hall. There is a corner at the end of the hallway and some Stairs. Looking behind you, you see a door. Obvious exits are East, West, and Dennis.

You are equipped with Fists. What do you do?
Just FYI, the guy isn't avatar isn't me. But he seems pretty cool.

Wrong game, Thy DungeonIdiot. You leave the Hallway to see Farm, Village, and 4Chan. There are several people outside 4Chan yelling racial slurs at each other.

Where do you go?

You are in a farm. You can see several fields, containing cows, sheep and goats. There is also a farmhouse. There is a path leading backwards to the Studio Hallway

am I the only one actually playing this game? Everyone should leave the modding to one person (preferably Chfan, since he made the topic) and join in themselves
Also, I vote that you should have to put an arrow in front of any command relating to the game

Nice thought, Camoninja. The idea was that everyone plays as a party. But if I stay off for too long then someone else can be a temporary mod. But still try to add yourself into the game. And do the arrow thing as well.

Now then...

Farmer Brown yells, "Hey! stop punching my chickens!" When you stop, he says "Thought this was just going to be a fetch quest, did yeh? Sorry I can't offer you any chicken meat, but lately all my chickens have been going missing. I hear a chupacabra has gone and settled into the mine up north. That's why I'm raking this dirt here. It's not particularly profitable, but I'm trying to make it a delicacy. Hey! Wanna buy a dirt cake?"

"Um...no thanks." Camoninja replies.

"Well, all right then. But you'd be doing me a big favor if you killed that chupacabra!"

Quest Unlocked: The Chupacabra

Kill the chupacabra deep within the mine north of Farmer Brown's Farm.

Reward:

10 Pieces of Chicken Meat (+2 HP)
5 Dirt Cakes (Projectile, Blind Enemy 2 sec.)
30 Gold Coins

You notice Farmer Brown left a Rake leaning on the barn, but there's only one.

Camoninja has +5 Melee Weapons, but is slowed considerably by the size of the rake. It has no positive or negative effects on DeLink.

Do you take the rake? And if so, who?

if I may suggest, may we not use HP or MP but more general status's?

HP= How hurt you are
MP Usage= How tired you are after preforming the spell.

I dunno, I don't really like the idea of HP. I've kinda been thinking of something that's like a "comfort meter" where it goes down or up depending on things that make you uncomfortable. Like being tired or hungry could make it go down, and you could restore it by eating or sleeping. Other things might include temperature, if you're too hot or cold, fatigue, and illness. It wouldn't be affected by anything that couldn't kill you, or at least make you go unconscious, though. Like you could die from lack of sleep or food, or from hypothermia or heat stroke, or being too sick. If you used magic, you would be less comfortable because it fatigues you, or something. Obviously, it would be affected the most by being hurt, because if you've just been stabbed in the stomach, you're probably going to be pretty uncomfortable.

Why doesn't everyone make their character before we move on?

Everyone has 20 skill points to allocate into whatever skills they see fit (along with confirmation by me, of course.) You all start out with 20 points automatically, in each category. Additionally, you have 3 points to spread among your attributes, all of which are currently 5.

Now then, HP and MP are only used during battle. Otherwise, you have a "comfort meter" which is normally at 10 but can go from 0 to 20, and is restored when you sleep. It's very nice weather right now, so all meters are at 10.

Now get crackin' with those characters!

let's see. 20 points, so:
Melee 20-24
Range-20-22
Staffs/Spellbooks-20-23
Ninja techniques:20-23
Thief Techniques:20-22
Reviving (priest,healing mage etc.):20-23
Attributes
Diplomacy/Speech:5-6
Charisma:5-6
Strength:5-6
Mod:Chfan

Players:
1.Camoninja
2.DeLink
3.babamthegrunt
This should be the order of "temp modding"
If Chfan is not posting, Camoninja will take place. If he is not here, I DeLink will take place. If i'm not, bambamthegrunt will mod anybody else who joins

wait, what's the difference between attributes and skills?
also, does the comfort meter carry over to the HP meter, and vice versa? So like, if you have a lower comfort, would you have a lower HP in battle?

Attributes are things like Perception, Charisma, Strength, etc.

Skills are things such as Lockpick, specific types of magic, types of combat (Melee, Ranged, Martial Arts), and things like that. So DeLink, try to reorganize a little. I'm kind of basing the system off of Fallout 3's system.

As for comfort meter/Hp and MP, usually it doesn't matter but if your comfort is above 15 you have +10 MP, and if it's below 5 you have -30 HP.

How does that sound?

Kinda pointless, in my opinion. You should just keep it with one system or the other, to avoid confusion, and such. And this seems to be getting a little complicated for just a simple forum game, unless you want to make it into something more serious, with proper signups and the like.

Okay. I guess we should keep it simple...but if there's like an official rule set for forum RPGs that would be cool too.

As I see it, you have 20 points to distribute into your skills (no more attributes.) Try to use them to make a fighting style and then we can move on.

Alright, here are my thoughts on the matter, mashed together from ideas from previous posts:
as Chfan said, do away with attributes.
For the skills, there's no need to have that extra twenty which you add things on to. It might as well just be zero.
comfort meter should be used universally, no HP/MP meters. (although it may need to be renamed something other than 'comfort meter')
for skills you can use:
Heavy Melee (i.e. axes, hammers, two handed swords)
Light Melee: (i.e. knives, daggers, one handed swords)
Ranged: (i.e. bows, crossbows, throwing weapons)
Light Magic: (i.e. healing spells, status changers (i.e. parilyzation, sleeping))
Dark Magic: (i.e. fire, lightning, ect. related spells)
Sneaking: (also self explanatory)
Lockpicking: (ditto, ditto)
Blocking/Shielding (i.e. how well you block, how much damage you block, ect.)
Agility: (i.e. how fast you move, how well you dodge, ect.)
Diplomacy: (i.e. what prices you can get in stores, how well you pursued people, ect.)
I realize those last two would probably normally be included in 'attributes', but they can be skills, as well, and they're kind of essential to an RPG

so that's ten, easy to understand skills, and with 20 points, it rounds out evenly. Good? What are your thoughts?

here's my plan:
1.go back to farmer
2.kill him and take his things, along with his dirt cakes
3.go kill chubacabra with the help of dirt cakes
4.sell it's fur for a rediculously high price at 4chan

I like it, Camoninja. Let's do it that way, and it'll be called the "fatigue meter." It can go from 0 to 50. All three players are currently at 40 fatigue.

DeLink, Camoninja, and Bambamthegrunt (the next time you're on), all spread your points among Camoninja's skills now.

But why would you kill Farmer Brown? He's just an innocent farmer! Maybe if you ask he can supply you with some weapons...

I think that we should have a level up system, and every time you level up, you get an extra five fatigue points, and five more skill points to do with as you wish. Also, maybe we should each have a special ability or something

I want the power to turn any metal into buildings! :D by buildings I mean turrents, health dispensers, teleporters etc.

Pros:Allows me to help everyone on the battle field

Con:Cannot attack/defend while I build. Have to rely on teamates

Chfan, I want some stats:
What areas will we go through to get to the mines?
How many days will it take to get there at our current level?
What is our survival rate against the Chupacabra?

and you still haven't assigned your skill points according to my system

Charisma is basically the same as diplomacy, guns would be ranged, and mechanics would probably be something that you would incorporate into your special ability. I was kinda envisioning the special ability as something akin to a limit break, though.
