Super Dungeon Rumble MkII - Demon combat round 3

Postby Christophoros » Wed Feb 18, 2009 12:23 am UTC

After the first version of this went down so well, but died due to lack of posts by players, I want to start it up again, this time with a revamped system. The premise is a D&D game where players have more control over the environment. The GM is only really there for running the bad guys during combats, and trying to introduce a semblance of plot.

I want to try GMing this again, but if someone else (someone committed, with time to spare for posting here) wants to give it a go I'm fine to play as a PC.

Here's the rulebook.
EDIT: There's something missing from the rulebook. Level 0 spells may be cast once per encounter, not once per day. Otherwise they'd be pathetic and actually worthless.

Super Dungeon Rumble SRD v2.doc
System Reference Document, in Word format. If you can't read this format then complain, and I'll laugh at you before posting a .rtf file.

P.S. This system was originally created by Chrismclegless. I am his reincarnation. I have risen from the fires of hell to attempt this. If you're confused, click the "Never forget" link in my sig. It's not to do with nazis, honest.

Ok, I'll play. Can I use my old character? Obviously not at his level, but his character and name and stuff. (I was TheAmazingTD)

Name: Drensan
Race: Human
Class: Thief
Energy:60
Gold:1
Items: Magic rapier: Usable by thieves and elves. Gain +5 on an attack against a person someone else is also attacking.
Cost 2.
Armour of darkness - Only useable by Thieves - Your sneak attack does an additional 10 unavoidable damage - Cost 5
Elixir of health: Regain 15 energy once. Cost 2

Back story

Spoiler:
Drensan was brought up in a small farming village. It became apparent at an early age that his sleight of hand skillfulness, and his ability to blend into crowds could make him richer than anyone else in the village. There were only a few shops: a butchers, a bakers and a greengrocers. He felt that this was a poor life for someone as skilled as himself, and that he deserved better than everybody else. At the age of 18, after robbing nearly everyone in his village (not of much, because he didn't want them to starve), he set off towards the nearest city where he hoped he could earn some money. Unfortunately, at the time he arrived there had been a huge clamp down on thieves, with every spare guard looking for them. It was extremely hard to get by even with his talents, and eventually he was forced to leave once again and find somewhere else to settle. On the road however, he was attacked by a group of bandits. He managed to slay two of them before they overpowered him, cut him all over his body, and left him for dead on the side of the road.

When he awoke he was in a small cart, being driven by an elderly man. The man took him to the nearest city, then looked after him until he had recovered. He then gave him a small amount of money and sent him out into the city, to get by on his own. He was ok for several years, until he was caught stealing buy the thieves guild, who hated free-lance thieves. He was tortured, then kept in a cell to starve to death. Luckily he managed to use his charm and cunning to escape back to the city. Realizing the danger he was in, he decided to look for work other than thievery.

Tell me if I missed anything or got things wrong (Which is highly likely).

Of course you can recycle Drensan. One thing I ought to say, all characters will start with 10 gold. It is in the rules, it's just hidden in the section about gold. My mistake. We'll do item creation and costs the same way as we did last time - if anyone wants a specific item then PM it to me or post it and I'll give it a cost. I assume all characters have all the mundane equipment they need - for simplicities sake non-magical equipment does not give any bonuses whatsoever.

We now have 4 people interested, I'd like to run with 6. Any more than that and combat is harder for me, any fewer and if people drop out then it really slows down.

Some sample items:
Spoiler:
Amulet of health - Gain 5 energy. - Cost 5
Amulet of natural armour - Gain 5 Damage Reduction - Cost 5
Armour of darkness - Only useable by Thieves - Your sneak attack does an additional 10 unavoidable damage - Cost 5
Armour of hardiness - Ignore the first 20 damage you take in each encounter - Cost 10
Axe of rage - Only useable by barbarians - Gain a +5 damage bonus to two attacks per round - Cost 5
Baliset of inspiration - Only useable by Bards - Your inspirations have a bonus of +5 - Cost 5
Blade of light - Only useable by Paladins - Grants a +10 attack bonus against undead - Cost 5
Blade of flame - Grants a +10 damage bonus to one attack per round - Cost 5
Blade of teaching - Only useable by Fighters - Gain an additional 10*(level)2 experience from each encounter - Cost 5
Bracers of archery - Only useable by Rangers - Gain a +15 attack bonus to one attack per round - Cost 10
Elixir of health - Disappears after use - Regain 15 energy - Cost 2
Gloves of power - Only useable by Monks - Gain either a +5 attack or +10 defence bonus each round - Cost 5
Mace of smiting - Only useable by Clerics - Once per encounter may grant a +25 attack bonus to an evil target.
Ring of Friend shield - Once per encounter may grant a +30 defence bonus to a target ally - Cost 5
Ring of Ironskin - Once per encounter grants bearer +20 Damage reduction for that round - Cost 5
Ring of Protection - All attacks against the bearer are at -5 - Cost 10
Staff of fire - Only useable by Mages - Once per day may cast burning hands - Cost 5
Scimitar of the forests - Only useable by Druids - Once per day may cast entangle on an opponent when he is hit - Cost 5
Wand of missiles - Only useable by Sorcerers - May cast Magic Missile 5 times. Once all 5 charges have been used, the wand disintegrates. - Cost 5

I'll join but I'll make my character after lunch.

EDIT: I've eaten my lunch now and I'm not supposed to double post so I'll edit this one.

Name: Yarvic Bardson
Race: Human
Class: Fighter
Bio: Coming from a family of bards is his name, slicing the heads off enemies is his game. A man who enjoys eating from large plates and drinking from large mugs. He'll also do anything for a bag of gold as long as it requires something to kill.
Washington: You have to be the most immature soldiers I've ever met.
Grif: Your face is immature.

I will totally join.

Edit: Here we are.

Name: Damascus the Madman
Race: Northlander
Class: Ranger
Skills: Warrior, Deadeye Shot
Item: Bracers of archery - Only usable by Rangers - Gain a +15 attack bonus to one attack per round - Cost 10
Gold: 0

Bio: Damascus is a fast-talking, fast living, gruff man from the North. Or at least he appears so on the outside. On the inside, he's what mothers tell their children in order to scare them into obedience. Damascus is being slowly eaten away by a terrible, fantastic, affliction. Thankfully for him, he manages to mask it expertly from most mortals.

He lived his life in the North mostly in seclusion, in the cold forests, living off the frozen land.

BFS was old system. It doesn't exist any more. The rules have changed, so the items have as well for balance.

Name: Andreus Papanikolaou
Race: Half-Elf
Class: Monk
Items: Gloves of power - Only useable by Monks - Gain either a +5 attack or +10 defense bonus each round - Cost 5, Simple fighting boots - Gain a +5 attack bonus - Cost 2
Gold: 3
Bio:
Spoiler:
Andreus is a Half-Elf, born in a distant land, although he was raised here. He comes from a long line of monks, though his father defied his own father, rejected the monk’s way of life, married an elf, and moved out of his homeland. Though Andreus was never raised to know anything about a monk’s way of life, his father still taught him the fighting style known of them and despite having no strong belief in any particular god, Andreus is still prone to meditating often. He is generally very withdrawn, and always respectful of others, though when he becomes angered, he is indeed a force to be reckoned with.

Note on the name-
Spoiler:
I decided to do a little research for the name, and I came up with Andreus Papanikolaou, which is a Greek name. Andreus is just a form of Andrew, and Papanikolaou uses the Greek prefix ‘papa,’ which indicates ancestry from a priest. I thought this would make sense, considering he’s a monk. The ‘nikolaou’ part is just from the name ‘Nicholas,’ so his entire name in English would be ‘Andrew, descendant of priest Nicholas.’ I’m not Greek or anything, I just think it’s a cool language.

OK. With all characters created, it's time to actually begin.

The sound of drums thundered through the streets of the city, calling all able-bodied men and women to war. The siege had been going on for months now, with no sign of letting up any time soon. Apparently the king had sent a relief force, due to arrive any day now, but no further word had been heard since. With a crash, a large boulder slammed into the ground somewhere nearby. That was another home destroyed. If this went on much longer there was going to be nothing left standing. The duke's mansion had been the first to go, an easy target for the gnomish engineers; after that they had just started hurling rocks randomly.

A burly man hammered on the party's doors, calling, "Get up! You're needed on the front! Speak to captain Mordun as soon as possible for your marching orders!"

For those who weren't in the last game, this works slightly differently to a normal D&D game. In this, you not only have control over your characters, you have control over the world as well, much like the DM. The only things you are not allowed to do are control other player's characters and give yourself free stuff. Basically, the rule is, "use your common sense".

Urist rolled over, and off of his bed, slamming his stout body to the ground. Disgruntled, he got up, rubbing his head. He put on some armor, picked up his battle axe, and grabbed several jugs of ale.

(gee, Gnomish Engineers, that sounds awfully familiar...)

(We're not all in the same house, are we?)

As soon as Drensan opened his door to the man, he knew what was coming. His attitude gave it away before the words came. After he had spoken Drensan looked him up and down thoughtfully.

I too have a feeling we're not in the same house.

Upon hearing the banging on his door Yarvic woke to see his friend Catherine, Biscuits, meowing for food. "Let me answer the door first," he said to the stubborn creature. Before he could answer it a voice seemed to have lost its patience and simply yelled through the door "Get up! You're needed on the front! Speak to captain Mordun as soon as possible for your marching orders!" By this time he opened the door and said "Alright, calm down, I've got to feed my friend Catherine first. Will there be money or some other form of good or service involved?" The man replied "A better chance of you and your cat coming out of this mess alive!" Yarvic then said "Do I have to see Mordun? I've had unpleasent problems with him in the past." A rock smashed nearby and the man said "I don't think past problems are on his mind right now!" and with that statement the man moved away. Yarvic fed Biscuits and put on his equipment before strolling outside. Today was going to be a long day.

I had assumed you were in an inn, but I don't really mind.

Hearing Drensan's comment, the man stopped. "Of course there'll be payment. You'll be paid by being allowed passage out of this hell-hole. Your mission will be vital to ending the siege. Of course, anything you find on the way doesn't necessarily have to be reported..."

((why would anyone be asleep while the city was under siege? You'd think that they would kind of already know. Even if the siege had only just started, it would be hard to sleep through those giant boulders that are crushing houses))

Andreus had awoken early that morning. He always did. He was sitting in silent meditation in a small courtyard near the back of the city. The siege raged all around him, but so far it had not grown to such force that it reached this part of the city. He wasn't exactly sure how long the city had been under siege, but he was certain that it was not long. It was probably only a matter of time before they started the evacuation of the city, and the recruiting of those able to fight. For all he knew, this may already have started. He was very removed from the rest of the city in this small courtyard. Then, suddenly, as though some sort of psychic wave had traveled through the walls and out into the street, Andreus heard a pounding on the door, and someone yelling about able bodied people being needed. He slowly stood up, and sighed. It had been very tranquil in the little courtyard, but for now it looked like he was going to have to give up tranquility in the place of (probably needless) violence. Andreus padded back into the inn which he was staying in on bare feet, and looked at the front door. The innkeeper was standing there, before a large man who was likely the one who had been yelling.
"So," said Andreus, nonchalantly, "Who exactly are we fighting?"

Urist picked up a note that had been slipped under the door. It read

Dear Urist

You are needed at the front now! Meet me.

Mordun

Urist grinned. Action. We walked out the door with 2 flasks of ale, when suddenly a giant boulder crushed his home behind him. Urist barely noticed.

I was originally going to use dwarves, but then remembered we had a dwarf in the party, and it might antagonise the locals a bit much.

I'm just saying, it turned out you liked my idea of gnome engineers after all, even though you wouldn't let me use them as a class... :D

((@Vieto: Better gnomes than elves. That would just be silly. Anyway, we're clogging up the thread.))

"Good lord man, where have you been these last few years? Lord Futhen's forces swept through our border guard a couple of weeks back, and they've been slaughtering everything that's been getting in their way. We've been lucky to last this long, but those bloody catapults are smashing this place to bits! Get your ass to the front!"

"I am sorry," replied Andreus, now feeling a greater sense of urgency, "I am quite new here, I will hurry back."
Andreus turned and bounded up to the second floor, taking the stairs two to three steps at a time. He quickly unlocked the door to his room and stepped inside. As he did so, he contemplated,
Has this really been going on for so long? The man said it has been weeks since the invasion!
Andreus grabbed his boots and quickly pulled them on.
I've really become disconnected from the world, I must pay more attention.
Andreus put on and fastened his belt.
I've become far too self absorbed, so concerned with my own inner peace to pay attention to my surroundings, and the suffering of others
For the finishing touch, Andreus took up his trusted gloves, and pulled them on
Well, no matter now. This has nothing to do with the matter at hand. I'll simply fight for my country, against this 'Lord Futhen.'
Andreus had never really felt any patriotism or loyalty towards his country, it was just the place where he lived as far as he was concerned. He had never been particularly interested in politics, either. He was more concerned with philosophy, ethics, and morality, and it slightly perturbed him that he might even be fighting on the wrong side of this war. For what reason had his country been attacked? For all he knew, Lord Futhen was perfectly justified in his attack. Still, there was no doubt that innocent people were being slaughtered , and it did not look like that would stop any time soon. So he would be fighting to help stop the mindless killing, and that was good, right?
Andreus came back down the stairs, slower this time, and stood in front of the man in the doorway.
"Lead the way, sir."

((No I don't. Construct, remember. Also, patience of the un-living.))

As Clonk rose from his stationary position in the main sitting room of the inn, he quickly said a prayer to his lord and god, Lord Bill, to whom he was extremely grateful. After his morning prayer, Clonk slowly moved towards the spot where a quickly forming group of "squishies" were gathering. As he waited about for someone to tell him what to do, he carefully listened in to what was being said by those around him. Some seemed to be a prayer of some sort, but to what deity Clonk could not be sure. Others seemed to be engaged in pleasant conversation, while the last fellow, an odd loner who dressed sparingly, seemed to be mumbling to himself. What he was saying, Clonk could not tell, for he was whispering underneath his breath.

Urist made his was to the front line, his axe glaring. looking around, he saw some odd characters. He wanted revenge on elves! But Gnomes would suffice for now.

As Yarvic came to the front lines he saw Mordun and approached him for whatever mission was in mind, hoping that any past issues wouldn't be brought up. After all, from what carnage Yarvic could see all around him, this was not a time for talking.
