Countdown to victory

Postby phlip » Mon May 11, 2009 2:20 am UTC

OK, here goes...

The first player picks any positive integer (1 or greater), and posts it. No other restrictions... the number can be as big as you like.
Each subsequent player must then post any non-negative integer (0 or greater) that is less than the previous poster's number. Any post that doesn't have a number, or has a number outside that range (either because they were ninjaed with a lower number, or as a joke, or whatever) doesn't count. No double-posting - if you post twice in a row, only the first one counts.
Obviously, this can only last so long, and eventually someone will have to respond with "0". That person wins, and gets points according to the square of the number of posts in that chain. Then they pick a starting number for the next chain.

For instance:
Person 1: "Let's start at 100"
Person 2: "78"
Person 3: "32"
Person 2: "0! Ha, I win 16 points! Start again at 173."
Person 4: "172"
Person 3: "171"
Person 1: "171"
Person 5: "You got ninjaed, person 1. I'll go 15"
Person 2: "0 again! Hah, I'm on a roll! Another 25 points for me! I'm up to 41! Start again at g64."
That is: Both the starting number and the 0 at the end count, but Person 1's "171" didn't count, since it wasn't less than the previous number. So the second chain had 5 numbers in it (173, 172, 171, 15, 0), and 52 = 25.

Keep track of your own scores... someone can keep a scoreboard if they'd like, that's up to them.

The point of the "square" in there is to make a long chain worth more than lots of short chains... If it was just a point per post in the chain, then a chain that lasted a page would be worth 40 points, but if every second post on a page was just you going "0! another two points for me!" then you'd still get 40 points, and it'd be boring. But with that square in there, posting 0 every second post will get you 80 points for a page... but a full-page chain will be worth 1600 points.
So there's a benefit to holding out for a while to get the score up, but if you hold out too long, then someone else will take the points. And because of the countdown, there's only so long that each chain can last before it has to end (and each time someone skips some numbers, that deadline gets closer).

By the way, since you can't double-post, posting "1" is not the smartest idea ever. And since people probably won't post "1", posting "2" probably isn't that bright either. And since people won't post "1" or "2", posting "3" may not be that good. I'll leave whether other numbers are good as an exercise to the reader.

So, let's get this train wreck a-rollin'!

100.

Code: Select all

enum ಠ_ಠ {°□°╰=1, °Д°╰, ಠ益ಠ╰};
void ┻━┻︵╰(ಠ_ಠ ⚠) {exit((int)⚠);}

Actually, 9 (there were three numbers in the chain... 100, 42 and 0).

Also, you didn't post a new starting number.

So I will:

Code: Select all

enum ಠ_ಠ {°□°╰=1, °Д°╰, ಠ益ಠ╰};

T(0)=Int;
T(n+1)=A function from T(n) to T(n);

in is of type T(n)

i0 = 2;
i1(x) = x+2;
i2(f)(x) = f(...x times...(f(x))...) eg. i2(f)(3)=f(f(f(2)));
i3(F)(f)(x) = F(...x times...(F(f))...)(2) eg. i3(F)(f)(3)=F(F(F(f)))(2)
...

i67(i66(...(i1)(i0)...))
I NEVER use all-caps.

I get 9 points.
I propose that each player is not allowed to say a number less than (floor (sqrt (previous number - 1))) where previous number < 1 000 000 000. Would make the game more interesting.
