I remember when...

Postby Max2009 » Fri Oct 09, 2009 7:08 am UTC

After reading today's comic I decided we could play a fun game.

Here we write down our earliest popular memories. Something famous, something big, something that only people alive then would care about.
Just a little something to make us old fogeys feel a little better.

Also, to keep the young upstarts off this thread (except for lurking and saying "what the hell?"), you are not allowed to post any memory that comes from this century.

I'll start.

I remember writing emails to my aunt and uncle. Only we had to dial-up the modem first, and there was no graphical browser. Or graphical anything.
That's right folks, I remember using the internet from DOS.

I remember the excitement when our neighbours brought over their new gizmo -- a console that attached to the TV with a cable. It allowed us to play Pong.

Yes, Pong. The first commercial video game, a whole console just to play paddle tennis in black and white. And it was fun.

(I think I was 5 or so. Pong was apparently released in 1972, but we probably didn't see it for a couple of years after that.)

I remember loading games off tape with my Sinclair ZX Spectrum +2. I also remember my parents driving an Austin Maxi.

I remember when I got my first video game console, the Game Boy Advance
.. I was about 10, though, so...

I also remember writing QBasic programs on a 486, and using KidPix.

I remember playing "games" in the Living Books series. Classic stuff. I've still got them, but the discs are slightly crusted.

I remember when Pokemon first came to America, and the crazyness it caused. Kids killing eachother over Pokemon cards. A local Walmart-employee being mugged for pokemon cards.

I remember when we watched Looney Tunes on LaserDisc. And then made copies of them on VHS. I was five years old.

I remember when Grandpa was asking my mom to get him Casablanca on Betamax. That was three months ago.

I remember when Ocarina of Time came out...

I remember Gameboy colors were so cool because you could connect them WIRELESSLY... (They just had to be less than an inch from each other with the sensors lined up.)

I remember using the internet from windows 3.11, back when browser based games were awesome. Anybody else play games like Star Kingdoms, Vagabond's Quest, WAR II, and Imperial Conflict? TDZK came a bit late but was no less awesome. Back when playing a real time game with thousands of other players was completely new and awesome.

Oh yeah Pokemon. That was amazing too. I remember my Raichu that was super effective against rock types. Pissed off a lot of other kids .

I remember not playing pokemon without those element card things you needed if you wanted to attack.

Actually, I remember playing all card games incorrectly.

I remember when my dad came home with a box full of diskettes. He had bought this newfangled program called Windows. It was 3.1, and it had a tutorial game that taught you how to use a mouse (something my dad bought the next day). It also had the best windows game ever, SkiFree.

I remember having an Amiga that played games that were on floppy, although we also had a SNES at the time. I remember getting a gameboy colour and wondering why the Americans spelt is color.

Ooh, let's see. I remember...
  • Playing Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?
  • The awesome themed birthday parties I had as a wee tot.
  • Drooling over a 233 MHz computer.
  • Not knowing what a "MHz" was, other than a way to measure a computer's speed.
  • Not knowing that a computer's "MHz" isn't even a valid way to measure the actual speed.
  • Winning a prize for a story I wrote when I was 7 or so.
...And a lot more, of course.

I remember using floppy disks to play games on an IBM using DOS. And not the small 3.5" floppies either. I'm pretty sure that they were the 5.25" disks, but I could be wrong. It was a long time ago.

Opening a pack of Antiquities and smelling the fresh gloss.
When Superman died and was stupidly reborn.
