Well, looking back, all I can see is that you misspelled 'county' twice in the OP

Technically the Mississippi splits off several ways.
Spoiler:

We meant the main river that goes from Minneapolis to New Orleans, but he might take it to mean anything touching water, meaning that "does it touch the mississippi?" wouldn't might not eliminate West Virginia.

Lets be frank, you either misquoted me, misread the question, lied, or something else.

edit: Also, for the Mississippi thing, he did say that he was west of the line we made, and everything west of that line is West of West Virginia.

Vieto, I would think that's just a simple spelling mistake. KrazyerKate seems to have the right idea to me--CaptainWalrus talked about how we should have been specific. Here's something I noticed:
thecamoninja wrote:Image
So, Are you located west of the divide I marked here?

captainwalrus wrote:Yes, that one was a bit hard to answer. At 10 questions I will give you a hint.

CaptainWalrus wouldn't have had a problem answering that if he/she were in Tennessee. But confusion about the Mississippi could have done something there.

To tell the truth, I'm nothing but confused at this point. We need to find a place that is 1) not coastal, 2) doesn't touch Canada or the Great Lakes (I hope CaptainWalrus got that part when he/she answered the question), 3) is "not west" of the Mississippi, and 4) is west of that line. I don't know if that's possible, but I'll look...

But when the Mississippi splits off, it becomes other rivers, like the Ohio River. That wouldn't count, would it?

Ok, you said
Does it touch a border with Canada (assuming that the great lakes count). That was an incorrect assumption, as not all states touching the great lakes touch a border with Canada. No one corrected you, so I just took it out, and only answered the part that was not a false assumption. Now, if you had asked Does it touch either the border with Canada or the Great Lakes, then I would have said yes. Illinois does not touch the border with Canada.

Don't be a rules lawyer.

The assumption is that the great lakes count as the Canadian border. Therefore, if a state touches the great lakes, it touches the Canadian border. Whether or not the Great Lakes are legally the border is a moot point. The point of the question is that the Great Lakes count as the Canadian border.

Anyways, CW wasn't very thorough in his picture. In the attachment, I redid it. One thing I noticed was that he removed Jo Daviess, so I suspect that he isn't there.

Are you inside the area outlined in red?

I think this is kind of dicey right now; CaptainWalrus answered the A-K question with "Yes", but included counties starting with L in his/her own map that he/she provided for us. Vieto's map follows better with the question than videogamesizzle's, but I'm gonna wait here until CaptainWalrus clears this up or we move on without me (I'm not a very take-action kind of person...)

This is Forum Games, so we shouldn't take anything too seriously. I'm very glad you are kind enough to provide compensations for any misunderstandings suffered between you and us. I'm actually having fun with this game, to tell the truth, though admittedly I was not here to witness CaptainWalrus reveal the mess of question 4. I'm working on a map right now, unless someone finishes first.

Okay, here it is:
Image

As for questions: I think asking if he's in that chunk of 3 counties would work well, but I think there are noticeable area differences between the two choices there. Another option would be to ask if the county starts with La. This would, in my opinion, seem to have better area equality, but also the downside that the areas are both scattered and less organizable than the first option's.

Well, actually, that second option isn't too good. There are few enough counties on the map that area equality can easily be worked for by mixing and matching counties, for example, Lawrence-Lee-Livingston vs. Lake-LaSalle-Logan or something.

(I'm getting my area figures from Wikipedia.)

I forgive CW.

Also, I agree with BB that isolating the 3 middle counties is not the most even split.

Therefore, based on my eye for evenness:

are you in Lee, livinston, or lawrence?

Nope, unfortunately not.

I will say that where I have seen this done before they took a very different approach, asking not about counties but things like, are you west of such and such city. It worked out better this way for you, as you had the state wrong, and this seems more interesting, but there people can get it in less than 10 questions.

Whether it is unfortunate or not depends on which county you are actually in. If you are in Lake County, we will have less area to cover than half of La Salle would have been.

Whatever happens, if we can keep cutting the area range in half, we'll make it.

Are you in Lake County?
