Thread Necromancy ExponentialDecay

Postby quintopia » Wed May 09, 2012 8:20 am UTC

The score of a post is the length of time from the first post (this one) until the time the post is made.

A legal post is a post whose score would at least double the previous high score. Illegal posts receive no points.

Thus, the winner of the thread is always the last legal poster, and the total number of posts in this thread at any given point in time should be bounded above by O(lg(t)).

Also, the rules don't say you can't double-post, so... I am the current winner!

Correction: INt€rN€t WaNd€r€R was never a winner. The post above this was not a scoring post. Nitrodon was still the winner...until now. (Current score is around 64 hours. Next legal post is not until Monday night.)

(this is an illegal post- just rules query)
For my first post, I got 7h:00m, compared to 1h:58m previous record.
For my second post, I got 38h:26m, compared to 18h:06m previous record.
I was under the impression that each score had to be more than double the previous score, as mine were. Why wasn't I winner?

You realize there can only be 11 more legal posts in the next 15 years, right?

This is of course, not one of them.

About 337 days, which is more than double previous poster's 160.

See you in January 2015

I thought that this thread could next be necro'd in early January, not now. :(

See'ya in 2019.

Let's do the calculations.

Thread was created May 9, 2012, 08:20:27 UTC
Previous legal post was on Feb 25, 2014, 01:38:20 UTC
faubiguy posted on Dec 13, 2015, 11:07:58 UTC

The following calculations treat a "year" as being precisely 365 days, and a "day" as being precisely 86400 SI seconds.
Previous legal post's score = 1 year, 291 days, 17 hours, 17 minutes, and 54 seconds. (Not 53 seconds- there was a leap second in June 2012)
Minimum score required to win = 3 years, 218 days, 10 hours, 35 minutes, and 48 seconds.
faubiguy's score = 3 years, 218 days, 2 hours, 47 minutes, and 33 seconds. (not 31 seconds- leap seconds were added in 2012 and 2015)

Thus faubiguy did not win.

A win is available at 13 Dec 2015, 18:56:13 UTC.
Or in just under three hours' time.

Unless I have made an error in my maths, the race is on!

I will not compete this time, due to having won last time.

Good luck everyone! :)

Oh, I was off by about 8 hours due to mentally comparing positive and negative times (past and future)...

Nonetheless, I should now be winning for real this time :)

Edit: Nvm, off by 10 seconds :P

Did I win? Oh... the suspense is unbearable. At least it will be over in a few seconds, either way.

EDIT: Well, Guess not. Now I just need to find a way to hypnotize the entire forum in 2019...

Thanks. :D

Good luck to whoever posts in 2019.

That felt pretty tense. I had to check if I had to be 'over' or 'at least' the previous player's score. Thankfully, it was 'at least'.

Indeed. Glad I wasn't participating in that mad dash :)

Assuming no more leap seconds occur between now and 2019, the next win is available on 19 July 2019, 05:32:01 UTC.

For each leap second that occurs between now and 2019, subtract one second from this time.

edit for self reference: some detailed calculations for double checking
Spoiler:
original post (may 2012) = unix 1336551627
patzer post (feb 2014) = unix 1393292300
emlightened post (dec 2015) = 1450032973

leap seconds in jun 2012, jun 2015, dec 2016

patzer 2014 score = 56740673 unix time difference + 1 leap second = 56740674 seconds
emlightened 2015 score = 113481346 unix time difference + 2 leap seconds = 113481348 seconds = precisely double patzer's score
next available score: 226962696 seconds - 3 leap seconds = 226962693 unix time difference
at the time = unix 1336551627 + 226962693 = 1563514320

=19 July 2019, 05:32:00 UTC

previous calculations confirmed

EDIT, JUNE 2019: Precisely one leap second has occurred since the last post. So the next available post is available on 19 July 2019, 05:32:00 UTC.
