Forum Chess!

Postby thedufer » Wed Aug 08, 2007 1:27 pm UTC

Someone asked about playing 1v1 chess through PMs, but I thought it would be more interesting to let anyone make the moves. Here are the rules:
Any person may make moves for either side.
No consecutive moves (i.e. take blacks turn and immediately take white's next turn).
Any move may be vetoed by someone else before the next move is taken.
I will make it easier to keep track by posting my pretty ASCII chessboard somewhat often:

Code: Select all

-----------------------------------------
| BR | BH | BB | BQ | BK | BB | BH | BR |
-----------------------------------------
| BP | BP | BP | BP | BP | BP | BP | BP |
-----------------------------------------
|    |    |    |    |    |    |    |    |
-----------------------------------------
|    |    |    |    |    |    |    |    |
-----------------------------------------
|    |    |    |    |    |    |    |    |
-----------------------------------------
|    |    |    |    |    |    |    |    |
-----------------------------------------
| WP | WP | WP | WP | WP | WP | WP | WP |
-----------------------------------------
| WR | WH | WB | WQ | WK | WB | WH | WR |
-----------------------------------------

P=pawn, K=king, Q=queen, R=rook, H=knight (H is for horse cuz K's taken), B=Bishop
Can't change colors in Code blocks, so first letter (W/B) is color, second is piece.

Let the chess commence!

I can't seem to use that chessboard without my eyes bleeding, thus I propose we use a simpler layout (that had been previously used) Uppercase is white, lower black. Quote the previous person's board layout then your move and the final layout after you move:

Code: Select all

 r n b q k b n r
p p p p p p p p
. . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . .
. . . . P . . .
. . . . . . . .
P P P P . P P P
R N B Q K B N R

f5

Code: Select all

r n b q k b n r
p p p p p . p p
. . . . . . . .
. . . . . p . .
. . . . P . . .
. . . . . . . .
P P P P . P P P
R N B Q K B N R

Oh far better layout. Thanks, Cuton. I suck at chess and just wanna watch, so I won't make a move. But why didn't the last person take the pawn? Is it something I don't understand or was it a poor move?

Generally you want to keep your d-e row pawns in place as much as possible, the alternative move for black now is to double up his e-pawns which is also not ideal.

as for the game:

It was a poor move due to my good self having been late for a mini meeting at the time and therefore having contracted a bout of stupidity. I think I may sit back for a move or two.

It's actually not that bad a move keo, the strading your king pawn on the f file gives you little to no strategic advantage and black's next moves would have opened up the bishop to just eat the pawn anyways. Ignoring the pawn and taking the oportunity to establish centre position is a good way to go. (at least that's what I tell myself, I've no formal chess training so I like to make up explanations for stupid moves.)

Yah I have trouble seeing everything at once in this ASCII format. My bad. Revert board to previous post. (see how useful the veto rule is?)

Oops in last edit I deleted the thanks for the explanation of that pawn move. So, thanks!

I am going to vote against this move because it will needlessly cost black a knight. As I moved white last, I am not allowed to propose a next move.

There is already a game of forum chess in progress. Please finish that one before starting new ones.

There's even a game of Fischer Random, if you are so inclined.

My bad I didn't see it. Can a mod close this thread until the other one is finished? Thanks for pointing it out. And please don't fry me for my stupidity with your Huge Fucking-Lazer.

This game isn't officially finished, but the game is as good as won for white. I think this game right here could be continued, seeing as it's only on the fourth move. (If you guys want to take the other game to the very end, that's fine.)

4.Qh5+ g6 (forced)

I also think that white could've taken the f-pawn on the second move without sufficiently severe repercussions to make him/her regret it.
