I'd say different dates, though, because trying to coordinate that many people, in two locations?

Ugh.

Is this dead, or are people still interested? Are we just waiting on picking a spot and time?

I will have to retract my Florida vote since I'm only going to be here a little bit longer (1-2 months at the max). Though if people wanted to meet perhaps around Orlando quite soon I might be talked into it.

I'm still in, but even Raleigh is a little far for me. Still pushing for Atlanta, GA or Charlotte, NC. For something cozier, I'd also suggest Asheville, NC.

However, after March I'll be in New York.

I'm in Central Florida, but I'd love to get out of this state for a bit.
Also, I recommend we pool it to wherever the meetup is*. Save gas and whatnot.

I just assumed it had died and figured I'd meet the people I wanted when I went to Illinois next summer. But if people are still interested, definitely. I vote Charleston, which seems to be winning right now (because I had to change the poll, sorry guys). Charleston is very nice. All sorts of places to go and there is shopping and it is generally a good time.

1. My vote is for Richmond because I live in Newport News/go to CNU
2. Norfolk is way cooler than Newport News
3. I wish I had met Randall when he went here, I had no idea who he was, but we know some of the same people. (I actually remember someone being like "so I just met this dude who puts cameras in kites or something..." when I was a freshman)

The MIT meetup seemed like a ton of fun, I'd love to have one that I can actually be in range (both physically and $$-y) to go to.

No, Richmond's kinda shady.

Not as bad as say, Newport News, but pretty shady.

1. florida sucks, it's too long, most people are way too far away to make a florida meet convenient.
1a. if we did have a florida meet it'd have to be orlando or north of orlando, maybe jax or g-ville or something.
2. if there are like 20 people in florida who can guarantee time off and a little cash, we can charter a bus and have one big geek expedition.
2a. extra points for filling the bus with playpen balls. (stolen from mcdonalds that we pass on the highway of course; those things are expensive!)
2a1. (no just kidding, stealing is wrong)
3. since this is supposed to cover all the southeast, let's make it last for the whole weekend! it needs to be cheap though so i suggest camping. hotels will be expensive/booked for holiday season, unless we do it before spring break ish.
4. is there another geekly event happening in the southeast soon which we could raid and turn into an xkcd lovefest?
4a. my natural tendency is toward anime/comic/gaming/hacking cons, but i'm open to new things (......... dot dot dot)

I'm all for that, I'd just have to convince my parents to let me do it...

we could all just sleep in the chartered bus (or camp, thats a geeky thing to do, right?)

As for the playpen balls, that would be a whole lot of fun, I'm all for it. Lets get the dimensions of the bus and figure out how deep we want it...

Otherwise central florida is a good place.

It seems that if there are a lot of people in the carolinas, and a lot of people in Florida, then Atlanta is within driving distance for both groups. The real question, though, might come down to timing; what dates work for people?

summer should work for me

I'd probably have to car pool with someone though (or we could get the bus)

I voted for Atlanta mainly because I live close to there, but I'd shoot for Alabama as well. Atlanta would be perfect because there are at least two colleges/universities within close proximity of each other. One, a tech school, is really close to a well-known and well-liked fast-food restaurant called The Varsity. The name of the school is Georgia Tech, and lots of aspiring engineers of various types come from there.

Then there's Athens, GA, which is pretty much run by the University of Georgia. UGA has been voted as one of the Top 10 Party Schools/Campuses.

Well, somewhere in Florida seems to be the most poplular poll option, but for me, unless circumstances come together in some beautiful fashion, that won't happen. Although, if it's during the summer that would be quite a bit more likely. So yeah, I don't really feel qualified to suggest a date...

I would love to do this. If may put my 2 cents into the conversation, I believe that Atlanta or Charlotte, maybe even Charleston or would be the ideal place for a meetup since they are more cetrally located, especially Atlanta. Also I like the playpen balls on the bus idea. you could do it very easily with a sort of large shop with a long hose.

Even though I'm in Florida, I can't help but think that Atlanta would be the best possible location. Florida is shaped very poorly geographically. Atlanta's closer to me than Orlando. 126 miles closer! :) Going south from Orlando gets even worse, and there isn't much in north Florida to make a base of operations. Oh, and flights to Atlanta are always cheaper.

I still vote Charleston, in Autumn, because the weather is amazing and Charleston is absolutely gorgeous. Or Charlotte, if no one wants to come to Charleston. (You'll love it, I promise!)

Charlotte is the best for me, seeing as that's where I am, but even I have to admit that Charleston is probably prettier.

We need to hurry and make a decision! I'm not sure which is closer to Wilmington, NC (which is where I will likely be by the time this happens), so it's a toss-up between Charleston and Charlotte now. Although, really, Charleston is probably prettier.

I think the issue here may be that the southeast just covers too much space. The closest one for me would be Atlanta (30 minutes). The second closest is Columbia, which is just short of a 4 hour drive. I imagine that the situation wouldn't be much different for everyone else.

Maybe we should break it up by state and just have little mini-meetings?

Well in that case, I would be able to host a sizable number of people in Charlottesville, VA most likely (although driving to any of the aformentioned places north of Georgia is feasable for both my roommate and I still).

I'm surprised that there isn't already a complex algorithm for this kind of thing. I thought about trying to develop one, but I don't have enough information and I'm too tired.
I did, however, attempt to construct an overly-simplistic algorithm. Specifically, I looked at a map and guessed at where the middle of the SE would be. The two cities closest to the guess were Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina. I went to MapQuest to find the driving times for people not in those cities using the poll for locations. For both of those cities the average driving time for people in other cities was over four hours. Looking at the specific numbers I noticed that any location central to the SE would place a heavy burden on people in Virginia and Florida, both of which are popular on the poll. Thusly, (I didn't know that "thusly" was a real word) I submit the following plan for dividing up the SE meeting.
Lo! The Norse & Souse Meetings!

The Norse Meeting could consist of Virginia, North Carolina, and many unexplained Scandinavians. (usually a good thing)
The Souse Meeting could consist of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and large amounts of alcohol and vinegar. (and probably heartburn)

Is anyone with me? Or is my combination of exhaustion and alcohol not conducive to great planning?

Hey guys,

I'm new here, but you seem like a decent group of people so I hope I can put in my 2 cents. I'm in VA, so I'd be interested in one of these meetups if it's regional.

Since somebody has to do it, how about we meet in Charlotte, NC, on Saturday March 22 in the afternoon? Since I know nothing about Charlotte, somebody else can run with it from here. The FL and some GA people can have their own meetup since FL is too far for me right now and I'm sure Charlotte would be too far for many of them.

Savannah is host to a wild and rowdy St. Patrick's Day parade every year. It's crowded and full of drunken revelers for days around 3/17. And, when I was in my twenties it was lots and lots and lots of fun. Something to consider - not for me - but for those that like that kinda thing.

And Helen, GA is host to one of the South's largest Oktoberfests, since it was founded by German settlers.

Looks like I'm the only person for Columbia, shame. St. Patty's day here is usually pretty sweet. Considering that I'm in high school I don't think I'd be able to meet up with anyone anywhere else.

Did everyone just kinda give up on this happening?

Also, I'd like to point out that the poll is a bit unfair. All but one of the options are for a specific city, while the Florida option is inclusive of an entire state. This heavily biases the result toward Florida. To be fair, you would have to list separate locations in Florida or have all options be states or similarly large regions.

I think it should be somewhere more towards the center of the South east. For instance, Atlanta might be a bit inconvenient for alot of people, but it seriously ups the chance that alot more people could make it.
