SUPRIZE MEETUP! In Chicago. - JUNE 21 - THAT'S NEXT SATURDAY

Postby LSK » Wed Jan 16, 2008 1:56 am UTC

RAIN PLAN: Meet without instruments in Field Museum at 2:01.

EXACT TIME AND PLACE: 06-21-08 14:01 [CST] 41.8826 -87.6234.

Afterwards, we're going to the Field Museum. Disperse at 2:11 in the general direction of Grant Park and reconvene at Buckingham Fountain. Here's the map: http://tinyurl.com/5wkhl5 Chicago residents: Check out Field Museum family passes from your local Chicago Public Libraries. Everyone: Bring $10 just in case.

People who might make it:

LSK
DoubleAW
Kasu
tr0ck
thefiddler
vvelox
shifuimam
rat
Teknobo
Apeman
Aldimond

Post in the thread if you think you can make it.

THE PLAN: Everybody starts playing at 2:01 ON THE DOT, ACCORDING TO THE ATOMIC CLOCK. End at 2:11, again on the dot. Pretend not to know one another. Learn any song of your choice and play it independently of everyone else. Bring the weirdest instrument you can, but remember that you'll be carrying it into the Field Museum if you stay with us.

Fortunately, Chicago has public transportation. If you think you'll have trouble navigating, the CTA has a website that plans routes for you.

I think Feb. 16 might be a bit too soon. AFAIK, we're having two [per discussion in IRC]: One mid-march to celebrate Super Smash Bros. Brawl and one in the summer.

06-14-08 14:00 41.8826 -87.6234 work for everyone?

I make no guarantees, as it depends on many things, but I will try my hardest to do this. I can't see what would stop me from going, but as it's a couple of months away and I still don't know what I'll be doing in terms of work this summer, I'll leave it at a maybe. I love random outbursts of song, scaring tourists, and giant reflective beans, so it only makes sense for me to try and be there.

Just as a warning Kafein is generally a crowded ass-place, which is why I haven't been in there in years. It might be better without the Northwestern students, but I'm just letting it be known.

Are we bringing instruments? Also, is there an allowance for licorice whips?

I needed an excuse to get a top hat.

Bring your own instrument if you can. Licorice whips are fully optional.

I would love to be there. Depending on my schedule (I recently moved out of the Chicago area), I will definitely make an effort to be there.

I might come if it's not one of the weekends I'ma be out of town running relay races. Yeah.

If we're going to try to rickroll/whip-roll Millennium Park we should be prepared to get kicked out very quickly, likely before we finish getting our instruments out. There's always lots of police around the park, and they don't accept any behavior outside of standing around and gawking at shit without a permit. Every single time I've so much as tried to cut across the park on my bike a cop has stopped me. Even on a recent 35-degree Sunday morning when the park was practically deserted I got stopped.
One of these days my desk is going to collapse in the middle and all its weight will come down on my knee and tear my new fake ACL. It could be tomorrow. This is my concern.

That all said, if I am in town and participating, I'll offer my apartment in Uptown as a space for partying, corrupting of youth, etc. Or even a place to crash for people coming from out of town, provided we mutually find eachother sufficiently not-creepy during the course of the day's events. But it will be June and so no need to spend much time indoors.

Guys, logistics problem brought up by my dad:
Millenium Park is in Chicago. Downtown, to be exact.
Kaffiene is in Evanston.

That's... that's quite a way to drive. Unless we're gonna be CTAing that day...

Discuss?

I haven't been around for a while. But now I'm back. Sort of. Not to the degree I was before, since I have more going on now than I used to.

On the CTA it probably takes an hour at least to get to Evanston from downtown. Maybe longer on a weekend, having to take an all-stop red-line train and transfer to the purple. Metra might be quicker if the timing was right, although the station is all the way west of the river (UP-N trains leave from Ogilvie Trans. Center at Madison and Canal, and Millenium Park is near Columbus and Randolph, for those mapping it). Driving on a weekend, unless there are tons of events that day, is 35 minutes (it would be much quicker if LSD didn't end in Edgewater, leaving you to plod on surface streets for half the trip... though the lakefront in Rogers Park and the north shore 'burbs is probably better for not having the drive right near it... or maybe it's actually worse, 'cause through most of the city LSD forms a barrier between the dense development inland and the extensive waterfront parkland).

If we have very many people, driving somewhere in a group is bound to be messy. Trying to find multiple parking spots in urban areas... yech. I think it would be easiest to keep the meetup within a reasonable walking radius. If Kaffeine is just a random coffee shop in Evanston I'm sure there are good coffee shops downtown too (don't know where any are 'cause I'm not a coffee person)... actually though most downtown businesses are pretty business-oriented. But we could probably find a good hangout-type place without going too far out of the way. I know of a cool tea shop on one of the fragments of 14th street. Don't know about games, they have cool tea though.

Yeah, I just kinda pulled Kafiene from the deep, dank, dark recesses of my brain-analouge.

Aldimond is right... We should keep the afterparty to somewhere near the Park.

Waitaminute: What about police? This is also a problem. We could get kicked out, and that wouldn't be awesometastic.
