I no longer post or update regularly here, so other folks have taken the mantle of organizing DC-area stuff. Check out the other xkDC thread instead.

UPDATE: Next meetup is in the works??
(and seriously, alternate meetup locations are highly recommended)

400 8th Street NW (8th & D St., NW)
Closest Metro = Gallery Place/Chinatown (for Red/Green) or L'Enfant Plaza (for Orange/Blue) - track maintenance over the weekend is affecting service to L'Enfant and Archives (info)

April 18th (Saturday), 2:00PM
Teaism (Penn Quarter) - lower level
400 8th Street NW (8th & D St., NW)
Closest Metro = Archives/Navy Memorial

Boo, I'm way out of the area now, or I'd find metro-money to get there. Instead I'd have to find bus-money for a 4 hour ride, and THEN metro-money :(. I'll yell at Rachel and see if she's up for going though (she was at the first meetup, and then at katsucon with malefriend).

Bah! Oh well, it is a tad short notice.

Anyone else? Even if you can't make it...

By the way, Rachel was at Katsucon? We tried to have another small meetup there... Only me, Risu (+1), and NatK were there, though. KF

Eh, it's looking like it's too short notice to really get much of a group going... Ah well.
It's also looking like rain tomorrow.

Changing the subject heading now.

We should try for a meet sometime soon, however. How does sometime nearer the end of April sound? Like, 4/19, 4/26, or 5/3? KF

Hello Washingtonites,
Not meetup related per se, however I will be moving up to the area in July and am looking for roommate/place to live. If you know anyone in a similar situation I would be most appreciative to know it.

Thanks, and I'm sure I'll do a meetup sometime once I'm there.

Ok, well.... Given that it usually takes like 2-3 weeks to actually put something together, I'd say early May is out.

Sorry for not getting back to this. I'd say since it's been, like, 4 months since the last time, do you folks just want to try for another regular meetup? Doesn't have to be anything specific (like a LAN party or something). But just a place to gather.

So, let's begin with time then. How does this sound:

May 17th @ 2PM
or
May 31st @ 2PM

I think any earlier would be a bit too soon to get something together. Time-wise, early afternoon worked well last time. Of course, I'm totally open to any and all other suggestions on date and time. May 24th is Memorial Day weekend, so I'm guessing a lot of people will be busy then. But if people are up for a meetup then, I don't have any plans of leaving town that weekend.

After that's the place. I'll make some other suggestions later (I'm of course biased towards Teaism as usual, but I'm open to anywhere really). But, I think the same guidelines as last time should apply:
- someplace metro-accessible (since not everyone has a ride)
- someplace without just alcohol (since not everyone drinks; additionally, some people may be under 21, so that might eliminate bars altogether)
- someplace that doesn't mind like 6-12 people coming in and chilling for a while

So, any responses? KF

I'd like to figure out the amount of interest in another meetup before suggesting places. Depending on the number, there might be different places that could work out.

How 'bout some folks who came to the last meetup in January? KF

Since phydeaux up there indicated not being in DC 'til the end of May, and there's another vote in favor of May 31st, and it can sometimes take a while to effectively put this stuff together... that's looking pretty strongly in favor of May 31st.

Any other thoughts here? I know it's like 5 weeks away, so there's plenty of time to figure stuff out in the interim. KF

Somewhat unrelated, but do we want to try and come up with an email list for future meetups? I imagine there are a number of people that go through periods of forum-checking and thus won't be guaranteed to see a meetup advertised, but would be interested if emailed.

I think there's enough interest in May 31st to scratch the earlier date off the list.
Now how 'bout some time/place suggestions?

I still recommend around 2PM, since that's usually after the lunch crowd, it gives some chance to sleep in, and some chance to do something else that evening. If I can think of a few more places, I'll make some suggestions later.

Vaniver wrote:Somewhat unrelated, but do we want to try and come up with an email list for future meetups? I imagine there are a number of people that go through periods of forum-checking and thus won't be guaranteed to see a meetup advertised, but would be interested if emailed.

The reason I'm not so sure about this is because posting meetups on these forums gives a chance for those new to the forum or area to join in, and I wouldn't want us to replace that. If we do get some kind of list going, I think it should be in conjunction with this, and only to post two things: when we're thinking of having a new meetup (and use the forum to exchange ideas on time/place), and the final details once they've been sorted out. (Both of which would be repeated here, of course.)

Not really an idea for a meetup, but, there's an exhibit opening tomorrow at the Sackler gallery that I'm going to see (link). It's a collection of Mughal artwork going on display.

I'm already going around 2-3PM. If anyone else wants to meet up then, feel free to drop me a line.

singularapathy wrote:I'd be interested, and if anyone's on the way from Charlottesville/Richmond, I'd be happy to pick a couple of you up.

I think 2PM should be a good time for you to be able to come up without encountering too much traffic in the morning, right? I've only gone the opposite direction (southbound on 95) at that time before, so I'm not sure.

Of course.

Now that I think about it more, I do like this idea. I think as it gets closer to the date we may want to put together a list for this meetup, and just hang onto it for the next time. KF

I can come on the 31st or the 17th, but the 31st is slightly better. Also, as a sporadic forum-goer, I like the idea of the mailing list: if anything had happened in March or April, I wouldn't have known about it.

All right, so... How about some suggestions on a place? I think we can shoot for having a place in mind by the 17th (that gives almost two weeks to decide).

To run over the limitation suggestions I had last time:
  • Avoid places with under-21 age restrictions. I think a few people are in the 18-20 age range, and there're plenty of other options.
  • Suggest places where there is plenty more than alcohol available, since not everyone drinks (or can drink). (Last I recall, there were a handful of bars that still allowed 18-20 year olds in, but that was 5+ years ago and I have no clue which ones did that.)
  • Someplace that doesn't mind us chilling there for 3-4 hours is good. Last time we were there for many more hours than was originally planned.
  • (Conditional) Try to stick to places that are metro/bus/Circulator/shuttle/feet accessible. I don't think everyone has a car. However, if folks now or in the future want to go for someplace that's further away, we could always organize some ridesharing (I can pick up anyone from the Crystal City or Rosslyn metros, e.g.)
Anything missing?

Anyway, here's my top three suggestions from last time (we ended up going with #2, Teaism). Of course I cannot emphasize enough that any other suggestions are more than welcome! This isn't a complete list, and I'm totally open to any other options.

1: Chingching Cha (Georgetown) - a teahouse in Georgetown. The staff's pretty nice (maybe even more if you happen to speak Cantonese or Mandarin), and the food/drink is pretty good (dunno if they have alcohol as I never bothered to check). It's also a good place to relax for an hour or two. The one down side is that it's a little pricey for drinks, but not badly so (tea ranges from $4 to $10 for most kinds, food is a la carte stuff for around $3 to $10 depending on what you get--not to mention that you pay for the leaves, and one order of tea is like 6-7 cups' worth).
Pros: Usually not too crowded, good place to relax, easily-accessible
Cons: Moderate price range (but not badly so)

2: Teaism (Archives/Navy-Memorial) - another good place; their food menu is more extensive so you can have a full lunch there if you want. The one near Archives/Navy Memorial probably has a good decor/atmosphere, but there's another in Dupont Circle that's almost as good. This is also nice as it's relatively inexpensive, and it's fine to chill here for 1-2 hours or however long you want. However, it may be a little crowded on a weekend, which is why mid-afternoon may work better here.
Pros: Easily-accessible, nice atmosphere, close to the Smithsonian and National Mall area
Cons: None, really...

3: Ful Kee (Chinatown) - I've never been, but if folks prefer a full restaurant then I've heard good things about this place. The plus side is that we could have lunch here; the down side might be that it might not be all that flexible to staying for longer than an hour or so, and might be pricier if some folks aren't that hungry.
Pros: Easily-accessible, lots of food
Cons: Might be pricey, might be crowded (never been, so not sure)

Repeat: I'm totally open to more suggestions. Anyone have any, or do any of the above look particularly good? KF

Teaism is also pretty good about letting people stay for an extended time.

Since it looks like some folks are a bit light on the suggestions, you might want to take a look at the DC restaurant guide:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/ci ... guide.html
(Browse by location would probably be best).

I probably won't offer any more suggestions than I already gave, to be honest. Particularly since I'm still inclined towards the same place.

How about if there are no other suggestions by May 17th, we stick with Teaism? KF

Ok, it looks like the location is set! As well as the rest of the details:
Saturday May 31st @ 2:00pm
Teaism (8th & D St., NW, near the Archives/Navy Memorial metro)
Website: http://www.teaism.com/

There's a lower floor to this Teaism (there's a koi pond and more seating there). How about we try and gather over on the left side of the lower floor (same side as the wooden floor and koi pond)? Bring red spiders, XKCD t-shirts, games of shogi, anything.

You order on the ground/top floor. I'd suggest ordering a little something before or soon after heading down (they don't seem to mind staying there for a while, but... it'd help). There's a pretty good selection of tea, but also some Japanese, Chinese, and Indian food as well--the curry dishes and bento boxes in particular are pretty good.

Post if you think you can make it there! I can, of course.
