Hurrah, it has arrived! Gojoe, you have the writing of a four year old... Then again, I have the writing of a three year old, so I think our generation just sucks at writing.

Also yeah, there's no way this drive will get classed as a letter, and now I realise we'll have to send cables and AC adapters and so on around as well (unless we all want to get some of our own for the long run), so we wouldn't be able to fit a sleaker drive in an envelope either anyway.

Plugging in and setting up now.

Edot: Hah, yeah Gojoe used like most of the drive... Should I leave all of that stuff there so everyone can get it, and just leave less space for the rest of the cycle? 'Cause there's 184GB free right now, prior to me touching anything.

Having just returned to my Keyboard from being away MTbing, I could have saved you all some discussion on postage, as I work as a Postie.. Anyway I would say you want to increase the size of the package to get as much padding around the drive as possible, Parcels don't always get treated that nicely during hand sorting and transport... and you wouldn't want to lose all that investment.
Heeere fishy fishy... <><

hmm... http://www.nzpost.co.nz/NZPost/Templates/ReclaimRed/RateCalculator2/DomesticParcels.aspx?NRMODE=Published&NRNODEGUID={68133494-57E3-496A-89AB-982F54CECB55}&NRORIGINALURL=%2fCultures%2fen-NZ%2fOnlineTools%2fRatefinder%2fDomesticParcels%2f%3fparceltype%3dparcel%26weight%3d1%26from%3dChristchurch%26to%3dHamilton%26length%3d250%26height%3d200%26thickness%3d80&NRCACHEHINT=Guest&parceltype=parcel&length=250&height=200&weight=1&from=Christchurch&to=Hamilton&thickness=80

just guessing at the weight there, but the dimensions are for the box that my external enclosure came in, so all should fit. only $7 overnight and that includes rural delivery too, so no having to drive into town to pick it up. not sure about you guys, but im paying $100/month for 10gb of bandwidth so $7 for 1TB is still extremely cheap.

anyway, the essential components for my computer should arrive on monday, so hopefully i can get a 1TB drive in circulation by next weekend.

also, we should make up some sort of order to ship these things in so that we dont accidentally skip anybody.

We would be lucky to circulate it in a month, its gunna take alot longer than that to get it through even 5 of us id say. but its still gunna be cheaper than paying for the bandwidth. I think we are going to have to send cables etc. aswell its too much hassle with different adapters and stuff, but once we get a box the right size its just a matter of repackaging the drive and slapping it in a courier bag.

I'm downloading a ton of stuff at the moment, and going to ask my dad if i can upgrade our plan to get 10 gb a month, and I'll buy a big portable HDD tomorrow.

And yeah, we need a ship order.

I can see this thing just growing and growing, with people splitting off and forming their own groups, and more and more drives running around the country, and the inevitable schisms and so on. Oh the joys of being drunk and bored.

I like how we're far more effective at organising complicated file-sharing-by-mail networks than we are at organising meetups.

I deem this thread: SUCCESSFULLY STEREOTYPICAL.

Edot:
1) Gojoe, I put all your stuff in a "Gojoe" folder. I'll put all of my stuff in a "Jack" folder. Likewise, everyone else make your own folder in the drive root, and put all your stuff there. Every time you get the drive, wipe your folder clean and chuck in new files. That way every time you plug in the drive, you know everybody's elses folders only has brand spankin' new files.

2) I know a few people who would be interested in it swinging past them just once, if anyone else knows people similarly inclined let us know and we'll try work a few of them into the end of each cycle or something.

3) If anyone knows people from other parts of the web who would be down for full-on Sneakernet membership, likewise let us know... But only if they've got particularly awesome things to offer. We can't really afford to let on just anyone from all over the place: in fact, until we get that 1TB drive, we'll want to stick with what we've got here, since 500GBs just isn't going to cope.

4) Who's up next? Should be someone in the North Island, we don't want to needlessly cross back and forth over the Strait. Private message me your address.

5) Gojoe, what's this weird thing stuck in the side of this drive? It makes it an inconvenient size/shape.

Chch > Wellington > Auckland > Hamilton > Nelson > Chch

I think it should go

Gojoe/vslayer (who don't need to post it to one another. Put any other Christchurch folk in here as well)
Me.
Sally.
Dagnaru.
Daywraith.
Back to Christchurch.

That way it just goes North, instead of jumping all over the damn place.

I have a friend in Wellington who might be keen for a one-off shot at this. I'll talk to him.

just yesterday i think. fitting name though.

pollys lineup sounds good to me. do we want to ship the 2 drives separately once i pick it up or just hold onto it here and wait for the 500gb to come back so that we can send them as one package?

i know of a fair few people who would be keen on this, but we LAN often enough that i could just do it directly with them, rather than slowing the round any further.

A lot of games don't even let you connect if you're on 56k, so yeah I wouldn't get your hopes up about that working too well...

On the HDD note hopefully I will send it either Monday or Tuesday. And I'll try to do it muchos quicker next time.

I know for a fact that if i mute people on halo, I can play with pretty much NO lag. I do not know why. I know my upload speed is not slowed down, so that might be something... But yah... I can try tomorrow. I will just join a random game, and see how bad it is.

What I put on you mean? Or what's left of yours (90% of what you put on).

Also holy carp this takes a long time. We need to get an ESATA drive or something.

... That's faster, right?

why not just take it out of the case and plug it straight into your motherboard. the faster transfer will more than make up for the 2 minutes you spend rebooting.

'Cause I have no idea how you'd extract a hard drive from that enormous hunk of plastic.

Sentirized this morning, cost $8.70 for future reference. 6.50 for the postage, the rest was on the bubble package thing. Don't think it'll get much cheaper than that.
