*takes note of relational discontent*

Well I like the NASA launch idea. It's a ways away so people can plan on that Friday. And more people (searching this fourm) can find out about it and come.
so if people plan on showing, post here, (if we get enough, we may get a group rate ^_^)
I live in Homestead, and i've got four wheels if there's some one car-less and needs a ride, or just wants to car pool to save gas.

I like it too. :D Closer to the actual date (To try to rule out having the launch get deferred to another day), if we have solid numbers, I might be able to help on the admission part if we wanted to actually go into the visitor's center... I know someone who works for NASA, so he might be able to get tickets under some kind of employee's discount.

I'll have to talk to him about that, but it's a possibility...

WOW, should've seen that on the top of the page!! Feeling kinda stupid right now. lol. Sorry about the double post, felt that that needed to be addressed.

Anyways, 9/26 looks possible, though i won't know for sure for another week or so.

and you should!!! lol
1. for not reading the novel-like 2 pages before posting.
2. for not using the edit button instead of double posting.

none of us can really confirm that we'll be there until several days before,
so just post if you plan on showing, and pray against unforeseen circumstances.

Orlando reporting in!

Satellite launch sounds a spectacularly exceptional outing, sign me up! I also can help with car pooling, so long as passengers don't mind jazz, orchestras, and excessive mild speeding.

welcome dasknocker
So only 4-5 xkcdians in florida are open to the NASA launch?
I hope that doesent mean only 4-5 people in Florida read xkcd, that is a depressing thought

Sooo... Mirrorwing have you talked to your NASA insider about geting a discount?
(and I know it's unlikely but I'll ask anyway) how about a tour behind the scenes? In the shuttle? The moon base? Free souvenir? :D

No, I didn't ask yet, I was waiting on more definate numbers. But since the launch is coming up so soon, I'll see if I can get in touch with them in the next day or so. :3

I know there's more people than that (There's at least three people on the fora from my old university), maybe they're just shy, or totally socially inept. :P Or too far from the Cape to come.

Shy?
I'm as shy as it gets
As for social ineptness, well I lost count of all the akward moments and ruined conversations, even on some Internet forums (forums, you know, where you can take 20 minutes to think about a reply) tell them they have to go or you'll rip out their entr... see what I mean.

Possibly one of the best phrases I have ever heard. Thank you, sir.

I don't think I'm going to be able to make it to the launch. My usual ride to far places is going up that area on the 25th, so asking him to go up again the next day would be a bit excessive. :( And I couldn't swing a discount, sorry. Best I can do is $5 off admission to the visitors center.

Shit, guys!!!

If someone can give me a ride up to the space center on the day of the launch, I can get myself and five other people into the visitor's center for free!

I can try for my day off again. ill let you know tonight.

Well I mentiond the over time I'm getting, and they were happy to say OK!

So if you still need a ride, I'm good for it. /\_/\

I FORBID ANYONE ELSE FROM COMING!!!

just kidding
but it would be kinda awkward too be the only two, we need a third wheel :D
if the third wheel lives south of the center or within 15 minutes. we can car pool.

Well, I live about 40 minutes south of the center, in Palm Bay. But I'm the one who can get the free admission, soooo... o__o

Unless other Brevard residents want to come...

getting you is a given, how much is normal admission?
plus your south, so you're on the way :D
i meant 15 minutes north, (or anyone willing to pay all my gas :( (I'm doin 50 the whole way))

Re: Florida people

A one day normal admission ticket is $38 adult/$28 child (ages 3-11) plus tax, and an annual pass is $50 adult/$40 child (ages 3-11) plus tax. Prices are different for shuttle lunch days, but this is a rocket, not the shuttle, so...

Unfortunately, I really can't help pay for gas. I'm tapped out right now (Spent ~$100 on getting to the Nightwish / Sonata Acrtic concert last Sunday and now I have $9 to my name. >.< ), but I'll see if I can pull something together if it'll be a problem...

thats OK. 38 bucks is almost a full tank for me, but if you really do fell inexplicably compelled to give me >9x10^3 dollars, i wont complain! :D
you can PM me your address, or if you dont want me to know were you live (damn it) you can give me a location of a nearby McDonalds, i have a bike rack.

its you birthday? AHEM: remember we are the adults now, and we get to decide what that means, now go throw a temper tantrum until you get your way.

Greater than $9000? My my, are we taking a private jet there? ;)

Eehhh... as much as I don't care if internetman knows where I live, I probably should care, so I'll just PM you directions to the nearby grocery store. Close enough to me to walk there with minimal effort but far enough that you can't come axehack me if it turns out you're a crazed serial killer. :P

Methinks flying a plane around the space center while a rocket with classified and extraordinarily expensive equipment launches would be a very, VERY bad idea.

What is the cap around the launch area anyway, 25 miles and a damn good reason for even being that close?

hmm.... i used to know 2 people who worked at nasa. bought my last car from someone who works in the visitor's center. ill see if i can get in contact with them about future discounts for geeky florida residents o_O

are there any plans in the works for a con meet-up in central fl? i'd carpool ppl from the south if we split the gas (i've got the mpg of a truck so any help i get with gas is great)

next year, definitely, we should do a southernmost point meet-up during fantasy fest xD

go to charts, click orlando, zoom out a little
when something is happening, there is no flying over the area at all regardless of the payload.
they MAY not shoot you down if you got too close, but there WILL be a small army of black SUV's waiting for you when you land :|

Well, I just looked it up, and it looks like the launch of the rocket was delayed to, of all days, Halloween.

So it's you guys' call as to whether or not we still go. It's only this weekend that Brevard residents can get into the visitor's center for free, but if psypete knows / knew someone who works at the actual visitor's center...

well the rocket launch would have been nice, but i've got nothing else to do. so im still up for it if you are.

Sure, I'm still up for it. :) I haven't been there in years, either. Not since before I started college for Space Sciences, actually.

i would like to leave Dixie around 8:30 so we could get there at opening (unless you don't want to be there so early)
so ill be there at 8 o'clock to eat something. so join me if you want, or sleep in to your hearts content :D

I might be a bit late for this forum, but there will be new launches soon... hopefully...
Shuttle Endeavor is scheduled for November 14 at 7:55pm local time. Two days later is a Delta 4 launch.

I'm a Florida native (unfortunately). Lakeland/Melbourne/Cape Canaveral.
