Hi Folks!

I just wanted to drop a line on the topic of xkcd-MeetUps in Germany.
So, if anyone of you would be interested on that topic, post here if you please.

I'm living in Bielefeld/NRW wich in in the middle west. Anyone else here?

*hopes for response*

aaaw, I'm sorry dude!

You might want to poke some Germans here and there, they might not come in here.

I'm sure I will visit Berlin again, but that's not really close to where you live. Are you anywhere near the NL border tho?
Don't go out of your way tho, the east border is quite far for me to reach too from the west coast of NL, but who knows :)
This too shall pass

B-b-bielefeld? Ich bin grad in Aachen, aber bald wieder in Nürnberg, und von da isses ziemlich weit nach NRW.
Ich denk mal, Deutschland ist etwas zu mager vertreten hier, um ein Meetup zustande zu kriegen :/

That's what I thought. Some hidden-lurking-mass of German xkcdians could have jumped out of Hyperspace and we would have a meetup in NO time!

Bielefeld, eh? Do you really expect people here believe in such lies?

Sorry, I couldn't resist  On a more serious note: I am from germany and I might be interested in a meetup. Even so I am quite occupied with various work at the moment...

Sorry, I couldn't resist

Don't sweat it, nobody can. I'm used to it already. :P

Explanation:
Spoiler:
Since my Hometown has no great sights, landmarks, or phenomally interesting things to see that would be worth the trip for tourists, many people in Germany don't have a mental image of Bielefeld. [speak: Bee - le (e as in earth) -felt] The best we have is a crappy art museum, some really small wannabe-castle and maybe something like a hill. Not high enough to be of interest but high enough to hold back all the heavy clouds. --> We are one of the cities with the most rain in whole Germany.
So, some CUR-SED day in 1994, some guys from UseNet invented a myth / conspiracy theory that says that Bielefeld doesn't exist at all. The truth about our town is that THEY came to the place where the town is supposed to be (Some say THEY are the CIA, some say THEY are Aliens who landed here (Our University is their spaceship with J.F. Kennedy living in it's basement together with his buddy Elvis Presley)) and brainwashed everybody who saw them. Everybody who claims to be Bielefeld, has been brainwashed by THEM. THEY are also manipulating the media and so on and so on and so on. If you go to Bielefeld, THEY erase your memory and make you believe you really are from Bielefeld and experienced all those things you remember. To not arouse THEIR attention, believers just speak of B-Town, the B-Word, or (my favourite) simply of Bielefake. Of course, all licence plates from Bielefeld are fake as well.

Now, this is quite the hell of a running gag and it has been for 14 years now. And almost EVERY (I'd say 9 out of 10 times) time you get to introduce you to somebody (some girls as well but mostly guys) from somewhere else, you always get answers like:

"Oh, from Bielefeld?! Excuse me please, gotta make a call to the police!"
"Oh Bielefeld?! The town that doesn't exist?"
"Bielefeld? Are those Aliens real?"
"Aw, C'mon we both know Bielefeld doesn't exist"

MESSAGE TO EVERYBODY OUT THERE SPEAKING TO SOMEONE FROM BIELEFELD FOR THE FIRST TIME AND WANTS TO MAKE A SILLY JOKE:
DON'T! We've hear every single one of them! Every. Single. One. Of. Them. Believe me!

So, for us it's not that funny but it's hell of a laugh for everyone else. YaY. :?

btt:
Since you are from Germany AND interested in a Meetup, would you mind to tell me where you live? Because even if you are burried with work at the moment, I'd like to know for future reference.

Sure, I live in Würzburg (Unterfranken)
Also, I'm potentially willing to travel to the other end of the country. (again: if time permits)

Dutch guy here, from Enschede (East border). It's quite possible I would attend a German meetup :)
Don't count on me speaking German though. I totally suck at it.

Düsseldorf, but I'm moving to Munich October 1st. If we could arrange a meetup in NRW after September 8 and before the month ends, I would certainly be there. :D

I'm from Reutlingen, about an hour from Stuttgart, so NRW is a bit far (although better than, say, Berlin) and train tickets can be expensive... plus I already planned my time off at work, so I can only be in if we do this on a weekend. Would be fun, though.

Damnit, you guys are all from the north. I thought I'd show up for the meetup to represent the wimminfolk but the north is too far.
Ich chum us de Schwiiz und das isch zwiit wägg. Too far south. So if anybody lives in the south, talk to me!

Oh, I saw Enschede... I used to go there (almost, to Gronau) during the Summers because my grandma lived there. We used to ride our bikes to Enschede for Ice Cream :)

Würzburg, Nürnberg, Frankfurt, Switzerland could be combined, couldn't it? And I will be in Munich from October on. In my opinion, a meetup with 5 people is better than no meetup at all :D
And we could also ask invite others to join us – people we know that like xkcd as well but aren't on the forums... (I think I know a few in the area :))

What about splitting up into one meetup in NRW and one in the south? An alternative would be to meet in central Germany (and I think a city like Frankfurt would be pretty suitable).

So much German language, so little skill in it! Oh well, I've been meaning to get better at it anyway. I can sort of just follow the bits of German in this thread, due to heavy context-relatedness :P

Yup, Enschede has a really nice ice shop in the city center...

...Now I'm hungry :)

I live near Heidelberg and I have just now registered to the xkcd forums (after visiting silently for quite a while already) to tell you that I'd like to join a German meeting.

So, when and where?

I've been Geohashing for a while now, in the graticules around the N49E12 confluence - that's Regensburg, roughly halfway between Nuremberg and Munich.
So far, I failed to meet anyone new, only dragged two of my Geocaching friends into the sport.

I'd be ready to go to a Saturday or Sunday geohashing/xkcd meetup in or near Nuremberg or Munich if some other folks show up. (Seriously, what would be the point in a non-hashpoint meetup?)
We could pick the nicest spot from the previous week if the day's hash is not near either city.

hmmm.. Eventhough my knowledge og geography sucks, I think I could make it to Nuremberg........No wait that would be Nürnburg. Nevermind. Man somehow this doesn`t seem organised at all.

Noch 'n Franke hier - Bayreuth.
If possible, I'd love attending a meetup, but it should be at least somewhat close to Bayreuth, so I could get there cheaply... or we could meet on the 25C3 (http://wiki.xkcd.com/irc/CCC ;))

Hallo,

Michael

Ok, let's try to make up a date and a place for a meeting. I'd suggest a meeting at the end of january, so everybody will have enough time to settle down with family and break the first new-years-resolutions.

As for place, I'd suggest Bielefeld of course since that is where I live. But I would be okay with traveling quite a bit. I think it would be great to meet some fellow xkcdians.

So, who's in?

Well I wondered if there was anyone to meet in Ulm when I visit but it seems that German meetups have been hard to organize altogether... Oh well. I will wave in a general direction when I land in Frankfurt and know that you are all out there somewhere!
