(xkcd at) 3Pi-Con; August 22-24, 2008

Postby davean » Sat Jul 19, 2008 4:18 am UTC

Randy will be the Webcomics Guest of Honor at 3Pi-Con, in Springfield, MA, on August 22-24. Their other Guest of Honor is Cory Doctorow, which should be interesting as he was involved with the comic back before it truly existed and this will be our first meeting; we'll see if anyone brings a hot-air balloon.

There will be some other webcomic people there, so that might be interesting to the people around here if you read any of them, as well a lot of other folk. There is even a scheduled time for an xkcd meet-up in the con-suite (Friday evening I believe) so you might want to schedule that in if you are attending. There are plenty of other things going on though.

There is a panel on Free Speech and the Internet, don't get the idea it applies on these forums (except FaiD), no matter how many panels on it you go to if you break the rules we still might ban you (I know this concept really confuses some of you :-p ), also, Blogging 101 is probably not for anyone who has posted in one of the confessions threads ... ;)

We will be bringing some black Science It Works shirts which we are only selling at cons. If you are one of the people hounding us for a black version this would be a good time to get one; the only other place I am sure we will be selling them is Comic-Con.

It is a young con, but I expect I'll enjoy myself.

Hey folks, Pi-Con staffer here to tell you about some of the programming you might be interested in. You should also take a look at our programming page, including a preliminary schedule.

Ever been curious what Randall does at "work"? He'll be talking about that with Cory in the panel "My Day At Work". Randall's also going to talk about building robots from junk, making money from webcomics, science tech and women, and brain-computer interfaces.

We'll also have a room with video games, including Guitar Hero and Rock Band - we may be getting a Harmonix rep to come by with some schwag to give away, though we're still waiting to hear back on that one - plus other games running on projector.

There's tons of other panels running, on topics like steampunk, dystopian fiction, Battlestar Galactica, web design, writing porn, human speciation, wielding liquid nitrogen for fun and profit, and more! Oh, and there's definitely going to be one panel in the hotel pool. Anyone up for underwater chess boxing?

Get a room in the hotel! And let us know if you're interested in throwing a party - we're working with the hotel to make sure parties have a noise buffer around them.

Any questions, send 'em my way. Or just post in this thread.

Yes, 3Pi-Con! I am excited about it, myself, as I will be on three panels, myself, including one with Corey Doctorow. It should be a fun weekend.

I'm pretty sure I'm going, given that I already registered. On the other hand, seems like I won't know anyone in the entire place, so I'm somewhat less excited than I could be.

I suppose I can content myself with panels and video games, if nothing else pans out. :P

I'll be there! (Okay, okay, so my dirty secret is that I am also a Pi-Con staffer.)

It'll be a good time. There'll be lots of nifty people talking about lots of nifty ideas. And black "Science It Works" shirts. And videogaming on the medium-big screen. And boffing. And many other kinda-silly things.

(Hey leaf, what panels did you end up being on?)

I'm going to be there, but I have no idea where as I tend to wander a lot at cons. Look for the guy with a buzzcut & 2' long braid down his back.

No, seriously, do it. Eh's a cool guy. (And doesn't afraid of anything!)

I'd probably find a way to go, but I have stuff I have to do that weekend. (Don't be sad, it's very cool stuff.)

Yeah, he's pretty cool. And maybe he'll introduce me to you, too... I have met so few of the people I read here! So look for the guy with the 2' braid and ask him about his nerf guns 8)

I've just posted a preliminary schedule of programming on our website. Go take a look! http://pi-con.org/files/WebSchedule.html. There'll be more updates in the next few weeks on our programming page, too.

A lot of people, including my roommate, spoke really well of the video games room last year. It is indeed a great place to hang out between events and panels.

Another thing that I've been told by former Pi-Con attendees is that we may be the friendliest con that they have ever been to. From the staff to the guests to the other convention goers, people were just genuinely NICE. So even if you don't know that many people going, and don't think you have any friends that will be there, by the end of the weekend you most definately will! Good cons are good for that, and I think that Pi-Con's atmosphere is expecially well set up for that.

Gee...one of the best things about that t-shirt is that it is NOT black, I've always felt.

Heh. We get a steady stream of emails, half of which are "Why aren't more of your shirts in colors other than black?" and the other half of which are "I want [Science It Works / Just Shy] but in black!" Can't please everyone, etc.

Hey folks.

The preliminary gaming schedule (RPGS, Board game Demos, etc) just went up on the website (http://www.pi-con.org/program/gaming). Go take a look, if there are any games that you want to reserve yourself a spot in shoot an email to over to gaming(at)pi-con.org.

If you are interested in running or Demoing a game we still have some space. Feel free to fill out the game master sign up form also on the website (http://www.pi-con.org/registration/games/gmForm).

See you at the con!

FYI, there is an official XKCD Meetup on Friday at 8pm in the ConSuite.

Do XKCD People want to try and organize a saturday get-together as well? Possibly for lunch or dinner?

I have a panel at 11 and one at 1, so Saturday lunch would be very rushed for me... I would be up for dinner, though.

I wasn't sure about going to this until yesterday... but I will be there! Hopefully I'll be able to get there in time for the official xkcd-meet tonight, but that really depends on traffic, and how long it takes to register.

Registration should be pretty quick! In previous years, it's taken only about 10 minutes.

As reported, people at Pi-Con were very nice. Totally enjoyable experience and really low stress. For me. Probably not for all you suckers actually organising things and doing panels. Ha. :P

Glad I went, though. Thanks to those folks who did do the stressing and busting of butts to get it together!

Hey, thanks to everyone who came and made 3Pi-con such a success! That was probably the most fun I've had at a con in ages. I loved the panels I went to, and the ones I was on were so much fun -- we had great attendees, and my fellow panelists were wonderful to work with! Here's to 4Pi-con, and may it be even better.

And if you haven't met Randall, and get the chance, he is such a nice guy.

I had a blast at Pi-con. I'm good friends with a lot of the people involved, and with the founder. I was lucky to be involved in panels, vending, rocky and setting up demos in the game room.

What made it wicked cooler was getting to meet Randall. He is one of the sweetest guys I've ever met. I got lots of hugs from him including two giant ones where he picked me up, I had a great conversation with him and it's so amazing that he's only 23 (younger than me!) and has accomplished so much.

For those interested here are some pics of Randy from the Con (please delete if not allowed).

I shot the official photos for the con, which are available at http://photos.pi-con.org/. There are a bunch of pictures of Randall and Cory.

My favorite is this one, which just seems to capture Randall looking at Cory with a dreamy expression:

Cheers! Enjoy the rest of the images.

Wow, the con was such a blast. That was an ASTOUNDING selection of panels - my only complaint is that I couldn't be in three places at once all weekend long! I will definitely be attending next year.

Everyone else should come, too.
