Postby pastrybot » Wed Jan 07, 2009 3:46 am UTC

Not exactly an official meetup, but this is the closest forum I could put it in.

I'm wondering about finding XKCD in real life.

Does your workplace/school/town/etc have XKCD forumites/readers and you didn't even know it? Have suspicions that your classmate sitting next to you is actually that guy on the forums? Try and find out here. ;)

I'll start us off: Austin, Texas. Especially high schools there.

Why not buy a T-shirt and try to find out in real life? Seems much more efficient, especially considering the majority of XKCD readers are not forum members.

I have never found a local xkcd reader, much less one who has heard of it, except for the one who originally told me about it.

Gotta second this one. I saw a prospy wandering around campus with her folks one day a couple years back wearing the "Stand back!" shirt. It really seemed to make her day when I mentioned I recognized it.
Totally not a hypothetical...

I saw a guy with a No Raptors t-shirt when I was working in our Students' Union, but I wasn't *quite* sure if it was from xkcd, so just awkwardly said "Nice t-shirt" and then stared at him for a bit. Not my best.

Exactly my situation. Most of my friends either are or eventually become xkcd readers. Oh, and I know one person that I'm pretty sure reads the fora, but doesn't post, which is a bit depressing.

I work on a university campus (ANU). There are frequent sightings of XKCD paraphernalia. I know there are at least two other forumites who are students here, but I've only met one of them (ZLVT).

I met a fellow xkcd fora guy at a club yesterday. It was totally out of the blue.

A lot of people up here (anyone in the bio/chem/physics/cs/math/history/sociology/anthro/psych/geo/econ depts basically) read XKCD. Actually, XKCD is in our college newspaper.

I go to umass lowell, I think I saw a tee once a long time ago, but didn't say anything. Funny thing was, girl I once upon a time had a crush on, things went horribly horribly wrong for us. She tried to kill me once, but thats not too important to the story. Anyways, next time I run into her a long while later, still totaly in love but with no idea what to say (she also still hates me at the point) and she is wearing the "My normal approach is useless here" shirt, or whatever the one with the hearts says. God I miss her.

anyways... Yeah, lowell, have I seen you around?

I didn't think there was anybody at my school who read it, but then talked to some people and I've found four or five others who read the forum (besides the three or four people I've introduced it to). I don't think any of them post on the fora though... at least not as far as I know...

Almost all of my friends read xkcd, which makes for awesome conversations. I'm pretty sure no one I know in real life reads or posts on the forum though. Today I saw a guy wearing a 'compiling' shirt. That was awesome :)

I don't know anyone who uses the xkcd fora, but I know someone who has read at least one of the comics, which I gave him the URL to (it was the one on the main page, at the time).

I'm in East Sussex, England, so I doubt I'll see someone who uses the xkcd fora any time soon. Maybe when I do Physics and Mathematics at College, I will...

Who here is from East Sussex in England? In fact, who here is from the south-east of England? Maybe there's about one other person from East Sussex on the whole fora...

I don't know if you are that guy who was talking about going there, but there was a post asking about UMASS Lowell and if it's a good school, or something.

Yeah, one of my friends I've known since first grade goes to Cornell. She should be a Sophomore too. Do you know a Taylor S?

Anyways, I should stop playing this degrees of separation game and tell OP I know two other people that read it. The first person is a girl who was in my math class in high school, who posted it on her FAcebook, and subsequently made me read the whole thing. Apparently she went to the huge meetup thing (the one that was foretold in the comic). I'm jealous. The second is someone who also posted it on Facebook and asked everyone if the guy in it was creepy.
I also saw a few posted on the outside of someone's door. It is the dorm and floor I live in now, but it was last year, so I don't know who it was.

There was a kid who goes to my high school (Pinkerton Academt, in NH), but he is four years younger than I am, who used to go on these fora.

Last time I went to a Chicago-area meetup for xkcd, I ran into a guy I know (by name but not by face) from swing dancing. It kind of took us more than an hour to figure out that we knew each other IRL. Freakiest ever.

I met a few guys at a party once who also read XKCD, we had a short chat about it. I know a couple of friends of mine read it, or tolerate it when I link it to them anyway, hehe. Last year at a service station, there was a guy with the "Sudo make me a sandwhich" t-shirt, who I probably should have spoke to, if only briefly because his sister was pretty hot and if she read it too...damn...[Although, she probably lived miles away...and would not have been interested in the slightest...damn reality]. I think I'm the only teenager in North London that I know of on the forums. If there are any others, PM me and maybe we can arrange a meet up sometime because the normal XKCD London meet ups involve having to be over 18 to get into places.

Tonight I went to a Decemberists show, and they had the "Send a text message to this #, and we'll post it here!" scroll screen, and there were numerous, numerous references to xkcd on it. I was very happy, and slightly wondering who was sending them, as I certainly was not. And one reference was very clearly a forumite, because they used a Meme I've not seen in the comics, but have seen here (the cheese, it burns).

I know for a fact there are plenty of readers at my school (It's a big school with a large engineering program), and it's not uncommon to see people with xkcd shirts. I have yet to meet any fora-goers, though. If you go to the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, let me know, and I might decide to meet you if you're not creepy. Probably even if you are creepy, but if you're a creep, I'll get all awkward and leave at the first excuse I get.
