Otakon 2009 (Baltimore Convention Center, Sat. 7/18 @ 2pm)

Postby Kizyr » Tue May 05, 2009 9:18 pm UTC

All right, so finally I'm getting around to starting up the Otakon thread. I'll update this first post as we get more solid plans together.

For folks who don't know, Otakon is one of the largest anime conventions in the US, and over the years it's morphed into a giant Japanese Culture/J-Pop/J-Rock/Video Game sort of thing. It has its highs and lows, but overall I've found it worthwhile going each year ever since 2003.

So, who all is planning on going this year? I know at least a few people are, so I was figuring we could get some kind of meetup together. We can hammer out plans later, but for now, how 'bout a list of who can make it that weekend?
EDIT: Details below. See you Saturday!

Showtime/Venue:
Date/Time: Saturday (7/18) @ 2:00PM

Updates!

Otakon 2009 pre-registration is open now. I really suggest pre-reg, since you can pick up your badge on Thursday evening, or if you pick it up later in the weekend (Friday-Saturday) then the line is generally shorter. I think there's a price break too, but I'm not sure. (It's currently $55 for pre-reg; I don't remember the at-door price.)

They also announced Kanon Wakeshima as the musical guest.

So... there's gotta be more people here going this year. Speak up! KF

I'll be there. Hopefully, I'll be cosplaying as Thunderbird-tan.

I'm thinking of maybe doing Bill (from L4D), but I don't know if I'll stop being lazy long enough to put it together. It also depends on if my friends want to do the rest of the group.

I am 80% sure I am going. I will hopefully be more sure by next week!

I have never cosplayed as anything at all but I think it would be fun and also want to be Aang because I'm already bald.

Sounds good so far! One of the folks who was at the last XKCD-DC meetup (but doesn't post on the forums) will be going, too, so I'll keep him in the loop on this.

I would've really liked to cosplay as Prosecutor Godot (since it'd let me get into character), but, with a Japan trip between now and then, realistically I'm not going to have the time to get that together.

You mean from the OS-tans, or something else?

Excellent! I'm looking forward to being able to meet everyone who's going in person, I hope.

I'm still waiting to hear word back from Panel Ops on if our panel's getting through... But in any case, I'm still going. KF

That would be awesome if you set up a panel. Since the 4-chan panel was kicked off, Otakon panels have been a bit stale.

otakon has gotten way to corporate in the last 5 years. a lot of the 'fun' has been sucked out of it...
that said. i'm 85% sure i'll be going this year. is there a place/time for an XKCD meet set?

Not yet... Kind of waiting for the schedule to be posted.

How about a general idea? Saturday early afternoon? That tends to be an open and not-too-panel-heavy time.

There are two "must-go" panels for me, though, that could change that: OC ReMix, and the Lunar panel (assuming it goes through). KF

No responses yet on a time/place? It's only three weeks away!
Let me throw out there: Saturday @ 2PM
This tends to be good as it's near the tail-end of the lunch rush, and it shouldn't conflict with any panels (may amend this once the panel schedule is released).

I'll suggest meeting up at the corner of the large fountain in that giant hall--I'll post a map later when it gets nearer to the date.

Anyway, I put a list up top of who's going to Otakon. Anyone still up for trying to have a meetup, or no?

(By the way, I'll be in Japan for two weeks, so, I'll be checking the boards sparsely until then. But I'll try to check back in here.) KF

Checking in, I'll be there. And pending panel schedule, 2pm at the fountain sounds good. I'm assuming you mean the same corner that we met up at last year? Daigasso Band Brothers and all that... was good times, too bad it was only the two of us.

I'm trying to put together that Bill costume very last-minute. Not sure what day I'm doing it, though.

I might be a bit late to the meetup - if I don't get into the Evangelion movie Friday night, I'm going to try the Saturday afternoon one, and that's supposed to be out at 2:30. Will keep yas posted, if any of you are watching the thread while at the con. Otherwise I'll just text Kizyr.

Excellent!

Everyone, check the first post again. I updated with a rough map of the location I'm talking about. There's a big fountain area on the ground floor on one end of the convention; at the western corner is where I'm thinking we meet up.

I'll PM you guys my cellphone number tonight in case you need to call/text me. KF

On saturday I'll probably be 1 half of a hulking/wiccan pair. I'm going as hulkling, but I'm still debating if I wanna dye my hair blonde again since it looked terrible last time I did that. If I can convince the other half I'll see if we can't run by. Though feel free to say hi if you see me anytime saturday? (Is that an akward thing to say?)

It's not awkward to say, but your description will probably fit many, many other people at the con {^^}.

Swing by if you can. I'm not sure how long we might be there, though; it might be possible to grab lunch or something thereafter. PM me if you'd like my cell, and you can text/call me around then. KF

Meetup was great! I'm glad I got the chance to meet some of you (natraj and Pit, in particular) and see some folks I hadn't seen in a while (hendusoone, Vaniver--well, I suppose 1-2 months isn't that long a while).

LDJosh, mandalynn, we couldn't find you... sorry. Were you able to make it?

Anyway, I have the one photo of all of us from lunch. Anyone who'd like it, feel free to PM me and I'm email it to you.

Now, it's time to see about putting together another DC meetup in the future. Pit/natraj/hendusoone--y'all should come down if you can for that {^^}. KF

LOL maybe. I'll be doing a lot of con hopping, but I'd love for you to send them pictures around. I have yet to find any good / decent pictures of myself in cosplay (it bothers me a lot, but it's not something I can change so *meh*). I already decided my cosplay for next year xD
