[UK] Birmingham

Postby sixes_and_sevens » Wed Aug 26, 2009 9:05 am UTC

Even though I've seen a few people round here claim proximity to the Counterfeit Jewel of the Midlands, I've not found an explicit Birmingham meetup thread on this forum.

Is there any interest? As a provisional venue, I'd like to recommend The Old Joint Stock, a rather nice central pub flanking Pigeon Park. In the gormlessly optimistic event of having up to forty attendees, it could easily accomodate us.

Who's game?

I live in Leam, so I can make it over to Birmingham. The place's transport shuts down ridiculously early, though, so let's try not to make it an evening thing :-p

I live in Glasgow, but my hometown is Birmingham. So, yes. Whenever i'm stealing food and getting laundry done for me visiting my parents, I could probably come to future meetups. :)

This is a bit of a necro, I know, but Birmingham's the closest suggested meetup to Nottingham. I'd try to be there, and I could possibly persuade at least one other Nottingham forumite to come along.

Birmingham is reachable for me, I'm in Northampton which has good rail links.

As one of the xkcders Whelan knows and has taken to rustling, I will probably be showing up to a meetup.

Nottingham peep here (Nottinghamite?) but Brum sounds good. Only about an hour away, according to my admittedly vague understanding of UK geography -and Google Maps. Last time I was in the West Midlands I was with primary school, visiting either a Black Country museum or the Cadbury Factory Tour in Bourneville. Or both. I forget.

I'm in Birmingham and also up for a meetup if it's in the next few months. I'm job-hunting so basically free all the time.

Right, next step is to pick a venue. I don't know Birmingham, so won't be much help with that. My suggestion would be either a tea or coffee shop to meet in to start with, at which point, we can discuss further options.

Unless we get more Nottingham people with cars and carpool, I certainly will be - it's a bit too far to walk.

I'll be coming by bus but as pretty much all buses into town go to/near the train station it's probably a good idea to have that as a focal point for those from further afield. I was thinking maybe the Caffe Nero in the Pallisades/Bullring link? It's central, big enough that you can almost always get seats and also close to Nostalgia&Comics if people are up for a bit of geekage post-coffee.

It's in the Pallasades/Bullring link up - from New Street Station you go up the escalators and turn right, walking towards Debenhams in the Bullring. Caffe Nero is at the end.

I'm a fairly tall ginger dude with permastubble. I will probably be wearing a black jacket and looking lost. If anyone who's definitely going fancies PMing me their mobile number, I can meet up with you that way. Crystal_owl mentioned meeting at the train station, and I'm happy with that seeing as that's probably how I'll be arriving.

I'm hoping the package arriving on Wednesday will be full of xkcd t-shirts. I'll be wearing one of them wherever they're from (it's definitely t-shirts: that's the only thing I've ordered recently from abroad that would need to have customs duty paid). Anyway, I'll probably be wearing a dark-blue monmouth hat (the evolution of Robin Hood's traditional hat), with a large red feather. Depending on the weather, I may be wearing my big blue coat. You can find photos of me in the Facerity thread.

Give me some minutes to confer. We are coordinating ourselves.

I sound a little MPD there....

Apparently I will be tall and wearing a leather jacket, and keeping a girl in a trilby from being murdered. On a related note, can we put a definite embargo on all murdering? kthx

How about a little maiming? Is that ok, as long as it's non-fatal?

It wasn't the train station I suggested, it was Caffe Nero...confused now, where are we meeting?

I'll be the small girl wearing a purple coat and black boots.

EDIT: If anyone tries to maim me I will maim you back. I have sharp teeth.

I think it'd be best to keep maiming to a minimum, if only for politeness' sake.
