The Great (INTERNATIONAL!) Seattle Meetup of 2010: June 12th

Postby Sungura » Sun Jan 24, 2010 6:44 pm UTC

HI FOLKS!

So, a very excited Sungura, Zeroignite, and Quintopia are flying in from all corners of the US (mainly, Michigan, New Mexico, and Georgia) for a Seattle meetup. Other confirmed Seattle resident attendees are Kellsbells and CVSoul. We thought we'd invite the rest of the forum!!!

We would like to do a fora-wide meet on June 12th (a Saturday), and our main idea for where (thanks to the lovely kellsbells) is Sky High Sports...aka Trampoline Extravaganza. It is $11/hour to jump, but it looks So Worth It. Perhaps a visit to Cupcake Royale would also be in order. After all, going to need some sugar-induced-mega-energy for all the jumping!

Who's in?

Updated 4.14.10 I went through the pages to see who all is coming/trying to come :)
List of those confirmed to attend:
Spoiler:
Sungura (Michigan)
Zeroignite (New Mexico)
Quintopia (Georgia)
RoadieRich (Nottingham, England)
Kellsbells (Seattle)
CVSoul (Seattle)
Zorlin (Seattle)
branan (Oregon)
remren (Oregon)
nath (Washington)
netcrusher88 (seattle)
hack124x768 (Washington)
Poxic (Canada)
List of those who will try to be there:
Spoiler:
j the ninja (Oregon)
PhoenixEnigma (Canada)
Denby & Crickets (Canada)
kinigget
dawg1232
Low Caliber (Victoria, BC, Canada)
lighthouse (Rhode Island)
hideki101 (Washington)

Yup, I'm in, and very very excited. Consider me a confirmed guest.
This meetup is also Kind of a Big Deal. The three out-of-staters are flying in specifically for the meetup, and would really really like this to be as huge and inclusive as possible.

That sounds great! I suppose there's a fantastic scenario where I go through Seattle at that time going to/from my parents who'll also be in the US then, but I doubt it. We'll see, though!

As one of the Seattle residents and originators of this plan, I'm definitely there. I also think I'm currently Head Tour Guide. We want to make this thing as Big of a Deal as possible, so the more people the better. If anyone has any Seattle-specific questions, I'm PM-able and happy to help.

Hmm... I don't have a car, but there are assorted methods of getting from Vancouver to Seattle (including train and Greyhound). I might take a stab at getting there if I can arrange pickup/dropoff from a station, and a convenient hotel room or summat.

Count me in for about a 33% probability...

It is worth noting that Sky High requires that you bring ID of some kind if you are over 17 (might be 18), and permission to jump if you are under that.

I know this because we got rejected once. :(

Hmmm...Seattle is about 3.5 hours away from me.....I'm a little tempted to go, since nobody is really doing a Portland meetup. Although I can hear the conversation now: "Mom, Dad, on the 12th I'm going to drive to Seattle for the day to meet some people from a web forum and hang out" :D :D :D

I don't really know my way around Seattle worth crap, but I have been to most of the big tourist-y places at least once before with my family, eg Pike Place market, underground, Space Needle, etc. (PROTIP: Lunch in the space needle has a $25/plate minimum. The food is very good though)

Holy wow. This is actually quite possible for me. That's the weekend after I finish my current job. And I've been really, really wanting to visit Seattle because people keep telling me it's the kind of place I would love to live one day.

I will keep this in mind, save my money, and keep you posted.

Yeah, we're still working out how much actual touristy business we're going to have, but the Space Needle is almost certainly out. $25/plate or $15 just to go up to the top is kind of ridiculous. Kerry Park is a better view anyway. We may, however, romp around in the Pacific Science Center (LASER SHOWS) or the Sci-Fi Museum or Experience Music Project (which all ring the Space Needle itself).

What time of day would this be? I'm five hours away by car (and almost as long by airport), and I'm not too good with mornings.

If I can find someone to carpool with some/part of the way to defray costs, I might be able to make this work. Anyone from the central Canada area looking at going?

I'm not sure for a time of day, I would assume more afternoon but we didn't really set that at all. If there are a lot of people coming in from a distance that is annoying to come in/leave the same day, get together and go in on a hotel room. The Day's Inn Seattle Midtown seems to be one of the cheaper (without being crappy) ones, at about $75/night for a room to fit four. Free wifi, airport shuttle, and breakfast included. Something like that might be worth looking into.

I'm just outside of Portland, and I might be going. If you decide to go, let me know. Maybe we can carpool.

By "Midtown", they mean northish Seattle, by Greenlake and UW. I have never heard the phrase "midtown" used anywhere else, but *shrug*.

Hey all, I will also be at the meetup. You may not know me as I don't really do more than lurk the fora lately, but I am a regular in #FaiD and am sitting in a coffee shop across the table from kellsbells right now, so I am I assure you related to this meetup.
Kells knows all the good places around Seattle to do the meetup in, but as I rapidly become a local here (having just moved a month ago) I will learn of places to meet up at as well. I'll keep you all posted as I come up with ideas. I definitely recommend a ferry trip so we can all do something obnoxious on the boat. Also, if you are looking for some coffee in the morning and are in the northern area of Seattle, stop by UW for Trabant.

Anyways, I have a car, and during the times that I am not at work I would be happy to drive a few of you around the city. I live in Bellevue, pretty close to I-90 and I-405, which is about 20 minutes away from all the cool stuff in Seattle unless there is traffic.
Dear God there is traffic, so try to avoid going anywhere between 4 an 6:45 PM on weekdays.
Also, if any of you out there are guys that know me relatively well, I'd be happy to have one of you over for a night or two if you're not in on the hotel pool. The entire meetup is also welcome to use my kitchen to cook dinner unless there is a wild party that night, in which case my roommates will probably give you free beer if you show up. And you won't get dinner.

I may or may not make it to the jumpy place in Bellevue, but I can probably stop by the sugar/caffeine place and say hello. (Trabant is excellent! Also Herkimer, a few blocks north of there.)

If I wasn't already taking a trip not 2 weeks later, I'd try and make it. Unfortunately, I can't afford to travel twice to the states in one month.

That's sad. Luckily, as it's only national, I'm not really wanted there, being an international forumite :P

Kells and I went here today. It was really really good. However, it led to some creeptastic experiences based on the neighborhood it is in, so it will probably not be our usual spot.

That being said, we can add it to the Coffee Shop Tour* of the meetup! This means there's two places in the U-district, one place in Ballard, and two places on Capitol Hill that we can go get coffee at. So far. There's always more to add. We could even go to the original Starbucks if you're so inclined, although the coffee there is exactly the same as any other Starbucks in the country.

*yes, this means I am proposing we go on a coffee shop tour. However, since most cafes have at least two shots in every drink they make, we should probably split grandes between three people at each shop. You know, so our heads don't explode.

Hey, I was in that area today as well. I didn't go to Herkimer, though I did brew some of their Guatemala beans when I got home. :)

They do have another branch in Phinney Ridge, though I haven't tried it. I haven't really had any creepy experiences in the U District, though I can see why people tend to find it a bit shady.

Zoka is the other good coffee shop in the area.

Yeah, I gave it a 33% chance. It would probably be fun and there are a bunch of people going that I'd love to meet. But y'know, most people will be a couple of decades younger than me. It could be weird. (For them and for me. >.>)

(I'm not even sure if trampolining would be bad for my neck -- I'll have to ask the physiotherapist if I see him before then. Getting old sucks. Have I mentioned that yet?)

Aww. My best friend irl is 50. And we get along like peas in a pod. Does that help? :)

You were one of the people I want to meet, "Peach". Whether I make it there will depend on a bunch of things, but we'll see how the likelihood changes as we get closer.
