PAX is this weekend!
Are any of you wonderful folks going to be there? Want to meet up to hang out/ grab food/play a game/etc? I would love to meet all of you.

Also, does anyone have a couch/ floor /hotel room for me to crash on/in? The person I was sharing a hotel room with appears to have bailed. I have local contacts who I can also check with, but it never hurts to cast a wide net. I would need a place on Friday and Saturday nights, preferably returning after the concerts. I am willing to pay. Arrangements have been made. The EGE is awesome.

I have a floor, but unfortunately I don't have an air mattress. If you can't find another place, though, let me know and I'll figure something out.

It strikes me that an obvious solution to this is to ask rath to sponsor your purchase of an air mattress. They are cheapish and handy to have around. Wish I were PAXing, but I will be Vericon-ing instead. My a capella group is performing. Wheee.

Have fun!

As penance I prescribe that you come to Somerville and volunteer for the Markey campaign at least twice.

(No, seriously, anyone who's in the Camberville area and wants to make a difference on gun control, climate change, a woman's right to choose what to do with her own body, or a bazillion other issues, give me a pm and I will more than gladly hook you upwith the local Markey committee.)

The primary vote didn't matter much anyways, unless perhaps you were voting Republican. Markey pretty much had it in the bag. Which is true about the general election too I suppose.

Now the Boston Mayoral election...anyone have any thoughts?

Because it's not like an unknown candidate with a pretty face, a vague policy platform, and a campaign built on being an "outsider" has ever upset a liberal Democrat in a low-turnout special election for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts. Or that such an upset could completely derail the national conversation and the President's policy agenda.

I would if I had any spare time. I like volunteering for political campaigns. But grad school takes all my time away.

This is true. And actually recent polls don't show a huge difference between the two. But last time Coakley sort of lagged off until the last minute because she was sure she had it in the bag as the democrat. I doubt they'll make that mistake again.

I'm not convinced anyone else was running for the Democratic nomination. I never saw a commercial for another candidate. I occasionally saw Lynch at the local Dunkin Donuts, but it wasn't a campaign stop. I'm not convinced anyone else is seriously running for U.S. Senator right now, either.

Also, Martha Coakley was a distinctly unlikable human being who I had wanted to get rid of as AG, perish the thought of her at a national level. I think at least part of her loss was due to who she is, not due to Scott Brown's truck.

I have been thinking about taking a train down to the Boston area for a weekend to visit a friend, and was thinking about turning it into a two-purpose trip.

Are there any weekends where some of you guys will be doing something, so that I can get a chance to meet some of this awesome community?

Honestly, climbing looks a lot of fun, and I am in need of new activities. I would have to go once by myself first to learn, it looks like, but they seem to offer some good intro training. Hmm. Maybe, maybe.

I'll try to be a little more timely with the reminder this time:

MASSACHUSETTS PEOPLE! ELECTION DAY IS THIS TUESDAY, THE 25TH! POLLS OPEN AT 7AM AND CLOSE AT 8PM! GO AND VOTE!

(Also, if you're in the Camberville area and are interested in helping send a national leader on environmental issues, and a proud supporter of lgbt and reproductive rights to the US Senate, I'll be coordinating volunteers out of Davis Square all day Sunday, Monday starting at 5PM and all day Tuesday, PM me for details or just stop on by.)

And the result is....

...I mean really, did you expect anything else?

Also, terrible voter turnout. My polling station was actually so deserted I think I was the only voter there at the time.

And I live in an urban precinct.

Well, I didn't expect Scott Brown either, which I would have hoped was a cautionary tale about voting in these things. Seems like most people are ready to let it go though.

Voter turnout was low, certainly, but also I think it looked even lower because there was literally one line you had to draw on the ballot before leaving, so anyone who did show up didn't stick around long. Even knowing what I was doing last election it took me significantly longer to get through just drawing all those lines and carefully making sure I was choosing the right ones.

Anyhow. It would sure be nice to have higher turnout, but I also was not late to rehearsal on Tuesday because it took less than sixty seconds to get through the entire process. So I can't really complain at the moment?

Yeah. It's true that this time I was the only one at my polling place when I was voting, but I still saw plenty of people at work with those "I voted" stickers. I learned my lesson after the last special election, although to be fair, I didn't forget to vote or choose not to vote that time, I just forgot to plan ahead to absentee vote since I was out of town on that day and by the time I realized it it was too late.

There were 4 or 5 other people voting around the same time as me at my polling place, and it was 4:30 pm. I was also lucky to remember on my way home... I live on the same street as my polling place but I still don't know if I would have gotten up the motivation to go out again in that heat.

Scott Brown was not that surprising to me, he certainly managed a lot more positive press than Gomez; I voted for Coakley after planning on skipping the polls, but cannot stand her and actually I kind of regret not voting my conscience or abstaining. Abstained this time, partially out of extreme inconvenience and partially out of total apathy for those running.

July 4th Games, Food, and Fireworks

Starting as early as noon, some of us will be in the Memorial Drive median at the location given here, for boardgames, food, &c.

I will be stopping by Kendall/MIT station at 1:30 to walk over with anyone unfamiliar with the area.

I don't think the Cambridge side is tightening security as much as on the Esplanade itself, but it still might be best to bring a minimum of large opaque containers in any case.

I am taking a train up to Boston this weekend. Will not be there for the Fourth, unfortunately.
Are any of you open to meeting up on either Saturday or Sunday? I open to doing pretty much anything; I just want to meet some of you guys.

Two things;
Firstly, I may be heading into Porter Square for 4th o July festivities, if anyone is going to be around either there or elsewhere, that'd be cool.
Secondly, I joined the climbing gym in Watertown, which is fancy, and nice, and clean, and has free yoga classes, and I highly suggest anyone who is interested in climbing come check it out. More climbing partners is always a good thing!

What's happening in Porter Square for the Fourth?

Would people be interested in picnickery on Saturday? We haven't had one on the Esplanade in a while, and picnics generally make good informal open-invite events for new people to get to know old people.

Yeah, bad description; a friend of mine lives in Porter Square, so I'll be meeting up with her and heading to 'some place else' for the fireworks. I assume they're along the river somewhere?
(My knowledge of Boston geography is pathetic for how long I've been living here)

Ah, I totally forgot I had a friend's BBQ to go to on Saturday. I may try to do both if a meetup is still happening, but I'm doubtful that I'll be able to.
