I've never been to the Netherlands despite it being really easy to get to from here, so in the spirit of exploration, I'm happy to go with a NL meet.

Eh, never mind. Irssi was acting weird: it didn't show ChanServ at first, and also said:

So I thought it was gone.

Question: is there something similar to 'datumprikker' (the Dutch people will probably know what I'm talking about) in English? It might be useful if we ever are to pick a date

It seems the Dutch datumprikker has an English version.

Holy smokes, so many choices!
Is the location set to be within the Dutch borders, excluding Caribbean municipalities? Availability depends on location. Usually, I don't plan this far ahead, so my availability is also a little bit contingent on future events.

Wow, just found this thread and added my 2 cents to the poll. I'm from Germany, so a meetup in NL would also be fine with me :)

The number of poll responses is growing. Good. We might actually figure this out, haha.
I just realized I forgot about the IRC channel. It seems awfully quiet there; did others forgot about it also?

I've been in there a couple of times, but there were never a lot of people about. And if if there were, they didn't appear to have to say a whole lot..

Currently in Berlin.

Used to live in Amsterdam and still visit friends there, so that is not a problem for me either.

gordo wrote:I have given up trying to explain the difference between Holland and The Netherlands a long time ago...
Does it matter? Unless you are talking about Dutch regional politics, I think it is sufficient to always assume "Holland" means "The Netherlands" in spoken language.

Sometimes when people hear I'm Finnish they proudly exclaim they know one word in Finnish, "knäckebröd". Which, of course, is a Swedish word, not Finnish. Close enough. So I just smile and nod.

Fun fact: In Finnish The Netherlands is either Hollanti or Alankomaat, both equally correct. Latter being a literal translation of the Netherlands. The province is also called Hollanti.

Diemo, gordo and I just had a chat at the channel and I suggested to meet at my place on the 29th of June.
My place is close to Utrecht, which is central in the Netherlands and offers enough opportunities for fun.
You can stay at my place so you don't need to arrange any accomodation.

If you didn't fill out the Doodle poll but would like to come, please post whether you could make that date.

If you live outside the Netherlands, please check your travel options and let us know what you think. Travel costs to my place by train from some nearby airports:
Amsterdam, Schiphol - €8,80
Rotterdam - €11,40
Eindhoven - €14,80
Maastricht - €22,80
Groningen - €23,50
Antwerpen (Belgium) - €24,60
Düsseldorf (Germany) - €33,40
Brussel/Bruxelles (Belgium) - €37,-
(all prices subject to lookup errors and change)

gordo suggested to meet initially in Utrecht and then decide where to go. Thoughts?

Edit: added more airports.

As June 29th is less than three months away and some participants will have to book a flight or a train ride, I presume that people from outside the Netherlands will start to make decisions about now. I'd like to get an overview of who's coming, especially because I need to know approximately how many people I'll be hosting. That said, an overview is probably interesting for anyone interested in a Europe meeting.

I've made guesses to the best of my knowledge, everyone please correct or extend where possible!
(I'll edit this post to keep the list up-to-date. Edited up to post #129, Rium and PMs until 24. June 18.10 UTC.)

planning to come (or so assumed based on availability/manner of posting)
Diemo (Ireland) offered to help in hosting preparations
    J+ (Netherlands) host
    boXd (Netherlands)
Zamfir (Netherlands) offered to help in hosting preparations
    PinkShinyRose (Netherlands)

would like to come but unsure whether they can make it
    Naurgul (Amsterdam, Netherlands)
    sirensinging (England)
    Essah (Denmark)

would like to come but will certainly not make it
AngrySquirrel (Norway/der ingen skulle tru at nokon kunne bu)
    Zarq (Belgium, the Dutch-speaking part)
    thalia (Norway/Poland)
Drowsy Turtle (Northern half of England)
    Jesse (England!)
    robotWhisperer (Germany)
    SlyReaper (England)
    Rium (Central Europe)
    Negrebskoh (Netherlands)
    Pjotr (Netherlands)
    gordo (Netherlands)

others who expressed interest, availability as of yet unknown
    Luge (Norway)
    Coin (Uppsala, Sweden)
    Apparently Anonymous (Vienna or Norway)
    frogthroat (Berlin, Germany)

Note that the IRC channel is still open and nowadays tends to be permanently populated.
For those who can't make it, it might be a good idea to plan a second meeting in September or October.

Put me under "would like to come but unsure whether they can make it". I will still be in Amsterdam in June so there's no need to set up accommodations or anything of the sort.

Oh, also, maybe I should say, I'm currently living in England. And have just realised that I really have not posted here very much at all, so if anyone wants to chat to make sure I'm not a crazy axe murderer, that's totally fine. Clicking around on this IRC thing and just might be able to figure it out.

I think there should be enough space. I recommend that you make your decision soon, though, because tickets will become more expensive quickly.

just saw this, I'm deffo interested now, been planning a trip in northern europe (Germany/Benelux) anyway and this could be a definite goal. here's to hoping I get a smartphone at my birthday, should be useful for finding my way.

Will report back once I know for sure, I'll be on train if I do go. Hopefully you're not gonna make a deadline anytime soon.

I'll try to be on IRC channel too.
