Dude
Ive been making thermite at home for the last couple of weeks
i have been wondering if there was a easier way of making iron oxide (rust)
i have been making it by attaching 2 stripped wires to a 9 volt battery, and tying the a nail on the positive wire, then letting it sit overnight

any ideas?

If you dissolve some salt in the water, it'll act as an electrolyte and accelerate the reaction.

See if you can buy the iron oxide?

It's often encountered as a pigment for ceramics, isn't it?

Also, note that for a thermite reaction to work properly, you need Fe2O3 - not FeO, Fe3O4 or FeO(OH)┬ĚnH2O.

If you want to use rust, try and make it as homogeneous and anhydrous as possible.

That's what I did.

But I had trouble getting powdered Al.

You can just buy some aluminium rod and file it into a powder, though if you want lots it'll take a while :P

You can find anything online. Note however that Big Brother might come by to say hello. Finely divided Aluminum is used to make flash powder, and you don't need much of it to destroy things.

http://www.unitednuclear.com. They have everything- iron oxide, aluminum, magnesium ribbons, "special" igniter mixtures, clays that won't melt, ect.
EDIT: adult signature required on delivery.

The coolest part of chemistry 12 was when the teacher burned some thermite and molten slag flew out of the fume hood and onto the floor.

The detonation of hydrogen balloons was also a regular occurrence in my high school chemistry and physics classes.

So were would you buy it?
other then the internet?
a hardware store?

Oh and do not use al dust from a etch a sketch its to finely ground and will explode!!!

Burning steel wool should work, although if I remember it tends to give you slag which you'd have to grind somehow.

Better with lemonade bottles, they hold the pressure better and are louder when they burst. Last chemistry lesson bfore exam leave, we did one outside. It went off when I wasn't paying attention- made me deaf in one ear and I also yelled "Aah fuck, my ear!"

Someone else got burns on their shirt from sitting too close to thermite when it.. exploded... slightly.

Ganjmaster, isn't that the EXACT way the Anarchist's Cookbook describes making rust? I'm now worried as per the use of such thermite.

The anarchists cookbook is widely accepted to be one of the worst sources for pyrotechnics info (infact probably one of the worst sources for any info). A large amount of it is at best wrong and at worst extremely dangerous.

It's a basic electrolysis reaction that produces iron oxide. It's been around longer than the Anarchist's Handbook.

haha
Thisisnotausername im just going by experience...
if you want thermite that explodes too, use the etch a sketch...
its better to file it from a block of aluminum....

Just out of curiosity, why are you making thermite? Just to blow stuff up for fun?

That's an acceptable reason. Right?
...I hope? :D

(Though I doubt the Feds would agree.)

About thermite. Could you conceivably shape it into a slug with a magnesium fuse or something to ignite it so you can shoot it out of a gun or something? Hypothetically speaking of course. I've seen some magnesium incendiaries, so is it possible with thermite? I'm just asking, I wanted to see if flying, burning slag was possible.

This is the most disturbing article I've read in a while. I can buy shotgun shells, fireworks, and barrels of gasoline, but a chemistry set? Only terrorists buy chemistry sets. Let's outlaw them. Because a terrorist won't be able to get chemicals if we make it against the law.

The lack of public outcry is appalling.
