Darwin's 200th Birthday.

Postby rho » Thu Feb 12, 2009 11:53 am UTC

Just thought this deserved it's own thread.

[pretentious]
~A century ago we knew nothing of our origins beyond superstition and dogma.
Through curiosity, open-mindedness and hard graft, we have been shown our place in the web of life - Something of an intellectual revolution I think is on a par with finding our place in the Universe.
Knowledge is fragile, I think it is worth defending and worth remembering the giant's on whom's shoulder's we stand.

EDIT: Should that be "whom's" or "who's"? :s

And the Scientology pope!
EDIT: 800 post! That's four times 200 and almost not entirely irrelevant.

For he's a naturally-selected felllllllow,
And that many people do deny.

I just attended a lecture about Darwin where the whole of the science department rebelled against creationism. Through this I have learned one thing, philosophy professors are exceedingly verbose.

Haha, it does take a while for them to keep up. That took me back to the time I was reading about Hawking's encounter with the Pope in which the Pope said it was OK to investigate about the Universe, which God had created, but not the Universe's origin, since that'd be like doubting God's existence (Hawking nodded to the Pope, smiled for the cameras and went back to studying evidence on the Big Bang).

This Sunday, there was a front page article on the evolutionary process of sticklebacks in Pacific Northwest ponds. It details how the process of gaining armor due to environmental stimuli over fifty-odd years. Interesting read.
