This post was supposed to be the official grave-dig that revived movie night. It didn't end up getting revived until a few posts and six years later (scroll down!)

It's been edited to make things less confusing.

Scott Pilgrim!

I would watch that!

Tell me a couple days ahead, B, when you're showing that.

I want to show something scary too. Night of the Living Dead is completely legal to show. Also, has anyone seen Marble Hornets? That's scary as hell, if a bit amateur (it's a Youtube series).

Hmm, I've never seen a Russ Meyer movie before. If I had to see one, though, it would be Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, because I want to see how Ebert wrote movies.

Situation was somewhat unavoidable. PM me if you need clarification as I don't really want to publicly mention why.

Next week all the issues should be resolved.

I'll be having another, less-official showing of Scott Pilgrim vs the World tomorrow (SUNDAY @ 8pm EST) which will hopefully go smoother, and help me to iron out the issues with sound on the new machine. (testing starts at 4:30)

I saw moon and thought it was pretty good, but it's all about the short movie that comes on the moon DVD. It's called something like whistling, and was really good. I would definitely recommend a watch of moon though, even if I can't join in. (Stupid country, being in the wrong timezone)

Welcome to #xkcd-hugs Movie Night. The core idea of Movie Night is that we watch a movie together and discuss it (as much or as little as we want) in our IRC channel, #xkcd-hugs.

Currently we are showing movies on Saturdays @ 6pm PST/9pm EST (Sunday @ 1am UTC). on hiatus while streaming issues are worked out.

To suggest new showing times, click here. We will try to accommodate popular times and may even run multiple sessions if there is demand for it.

To vote on which movies to show, click here. We will make a new poll every so often to keep things fresh.

How to watch:
1. Download and install VLC Media Player from the official site.
2. Open VLC
3. If you're on Linux or Windows, click Media -> Open Network Stream in the top-left of the VLC window. If you're on Mac OS X, click File -> Network in the top-left of the screen.
4. When asked for a URL, type in http://movies.riff.cc:8080/.
5. You should now be watching the stream! If you did it right, you should see either this banner (if nothing is streaming) or the movie/TV show that we're streaming (if we are).
6. Join us in IRC! (see below)

How to chat:
1. If you already have an IRC client, just click here
2. Otherwise, click here to use a webclient and chat with us, no install necessary.

Note: Upon connecting to the stream, everyone ends up around the same point in the movie, allowing us to watch it in sync. You will fall behind if you pause or otherwise mess with the stream. If you end up behind, just reopen the stream and it'll put you back in sync.

Schedule:
Here are the current showings for April. "VL" showings are full-blown Movie Nights, "RL" are random once-off events for things we find interesting.
2016-04-16: Saturday @ 6pm PST/9pm EST - Coraline (VL01)
2016-04-20: Wednesday @ 6pm PST/9pm EST: RiP!: A Remix Manifesto (RL01)
2016-04-23: Saturday @ 6pm PST/9pm EST: Not yet decided (vote for a movie!) (VL02)
2016-04-30: Saturday @ 6pm PST/9pm EST: Not yet decided (vote for a movie!) (VL03)

Movie Night runs weekly on Saturday (PST/EST) or Sunday (UTC) depending on where you are in the world. normally but is currently on hiatus.

We use polls in order to figure out when to run Movie Night sessions, which use UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) to make it easier to coordinate things across timezones.

You should use Google to convert to or from your local time. Simply type (for example): "6pm Sydney time in UTC" into Google, which will return "6:00 pm Monday in Sydney NSW is 8:00 am Monday, Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)".

You can also do the opposite: Google "14:00 UTC in Sydney time" which will tell you that "2:00 pm Monday, Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is 12:00 am Tuesday, in Sydney".

You are free to select as many times as you want, but please only pick ones that would work well for you.

These times will be used to figure out what sessions are in demand, so please vote! We may do more than one session if demand is high enough.

Click here to vote on movie times (UTC)

I voted 00:00 - 2:00 UTC because that corresponds with 8 pm CorrectEastern Standard Time.

Looking at the other person's votes, I get the impression that maybe people here are confused by UTC, or we have more californians here than I thought.

I'm more interested in what the movie will be than anything. I'll offer maybe...Memento. Because I hear everyone online loves it, but I've never seen it, nor do I know what it's actually about.

The main Movie Night-related posts have been updated and revamped with better and prettier instructions, which should make it easier for everyone who wants to watch.

We will be showing Coraline Saturday, April 16th at 6pm PST/9pm EST.

Join us! #xkcd-hugs on Foonetic.

Be sure to tune into the stream early to avoid issues. We may delay the showing by up to ~15-30 minutes if people have issues with the stream, but that should hopefully be unnecessary.
