This week my employer learned that leverage, dynamic loading, metal fatigue and low temperatures can combine to case problems.

Mobile base, 2.5m by 28m or thereabouts, with uprights at ~3.5m intervals along it in four row, two in the middle and one each at front and back, diagonally braced. Horizontals spanning these uprights. In effect, giant shelves with only one space between them, remote-controlled to select which pair have the space between them. Less floor space, less wall, less ceiling, less heat ingress, lower land purchase, materials purchase and cooling bills et cetera than static shelving. Bases accelerate at maybe 0.1 m/s2 each way and travel at about 0.1 m/s. Each 3.3m bay can nominally hold up to 3t of stuff. Each mobile base can, supposedly, handle 350t of stuff. Standing still, sure, they can. Between people bouncing vehicles off them, bits of crap getting into their tracks (they don't know where they are, by the way, just roll along the tracks until they hit something), slight unevenness in the floor and that acceleration at the start and end of each movement, they've not been standing still. The heights above the floor are 2.5, 4.45, 6.4, 8.35, 10.3 and 12.3 metres. Turns out that trying to move 25t of stuff 12.3m up by shoving the base of the frame sideways puts more stress on the lower parts of the frame than they were really built to take.

They're going to have a very interesting time getting everything out of their expensive investment "safely," aren't they?

Any rich German women looking for an English husband? I can cook and sew.

TIL (through a satire by Boondocks) in the USA there's an actual television network called BET (black entertainment television). Isolating your target audience by skin colour is bad enough, but they're allowed to even promote it through their company name. :?

Because Wypipo have no power there?

I kinda don't understand the question. Segregation is controlled by the powerful group excluding and separating groups without power.

BET is the "Screw your networks, we'll make our own! With blackjack, and hookers! Forget the blackjack. And the hookers!" response. (Inb4 "But doesn't the group in power still have to allow it on cable programming?" Because there's nothing cable execs love more than money)

Now, we can argue about whether or not BET aids in promoting negative black stereotypes via it's programming and music videos (does it still do those?) but good lord, if goddamn Golf gets it's own channel....

Basically, if BET supports segregation, so does ... like.. every goddamn TV show not on BET, with a few scant exceptions that are rare enough that one can only wonder if they're token shows so various networks can say "We aren't racist in our programming, we have a show starring some blacks!"

What ST said, but also if I were a black person, it might solve the issue of hardly seeing any black people on TV (regardless of their characterization, which is often negative). White people self-segregate by choosing almost entirely white-led content, and cable companies promote this as well with the type of programming they push forward. Of course in an ideal world all mainstream shows would have a balanced and diverse cast, but that doesn't really happen, and the solution for black people (or any other minority) shouldn't be "just watch the white people already!".

In any case, even in a theoretical post-racist world, there are still differing cultures between groups of people - there's black culture, white suburban culture, gay culture, queer culture, etc. There's nothing wrong with having content targeted specifically at those demographics.

It should be noted that BET isn't a "network". It's a cable channel, one of many hundreds in the US. There's a channel for golf. There's a channel for farming. There are dozens, if not hundreds of channels for sports, including channels founded just to cover a single team or events at a single venue.

But there can't be a channel for African-American entertainment and culture? Yeah, fuck that.

TIL that choisya, which allegedly likes "full sun to partial shade" and costs £13 tiny or £60 large from Crocus, is still growing where I planted the tiny one I bought for that price in a south-west-facing corner where it can enjoy the sunshine and is sheltered from chilly northerly winds and icy nor'easters ...

... and is also thriving inside a hedge against a north-facing wall where it got planted by a bird.

Also that I've got a new rose bush growing under the established rose bushes. I was going to look up "growing roses from seed" but it seems I don't need to.

Today I re-learned, "Oil!".
Oil removes many adhesives.

I need a spare key to my 'new to me' apartment.
I lock myself out from Time to Time.

I used duct tape to place it within easy reach for me,
yet out of sight and out of easy reach for others.

umm...Duct tape is Sticky!
I tried a variety of cleaning products.

The adhesive just got sticky-er.
Then I remembered, "Oil!"

Oil melted the adhesive quickly.
Good Thing! I was getting tired.

I wrapped the key in paper before replacing it.

I've used oils to get off wood stain a few times from my hands. It's pretty wild that things like stains are so greasy that regular detergents won't bind to them.

Yeah, it gets worse as it gets older, and it's not even very good for ducts. There are other similar-looking tapes to consider. Real gaffers tape, while more expensive, does not suffer from this flaw (at least not in the short term; dunno what heat and sun do to it over time, but it can't possibly be worse than duct tape).

Gaffer's Tape?
I had to Google it.

Nah. I don't need anything so fancy.
When I want high quality tape I use Gorilla Tape.

I've learned to use it sparingly.

The hotel had loads of stuff available and we could help ourselves from 7am to 10am. They did the same with the salad before evening dinner. I did not need lunch. I was walking the Alps all day and not losing weight. The salad bar had four different balsamic vinegars, six olive oils and five dressings, and there was a hot water urn next to a shelf set loaded with maybe 20 kinds of tea.

Breakfast on a Hanoi backstreet was Phở Bò, soup with flat rice noodles (a bit like tagliatelle) and slivers of beef in it, served with one huge "rice crispie" like a sweeter and fluffier hotdog bun on a table already decked out with bowls of sugar, lime wedges and chilli jam so everyone could adjust the flavour of their own bowl, followed by cà phê den đá, a shot of Trung Nguyen espresso dribbled over a spoonful of sugar on top of a glass full of ice cubes. The trick to eating the noodles is to lift one with your chopsticks, put the spoon under it and lower it into the spoon in a heap.

TIL (not the hard way, fortunately) about a particularly nasty kind of food poisoning that is sexually transmitted. If your partner eats infected red snapper or grouper, you get symptoms. And those symptoms include weird stuff like reversal of your temperature detection ability, so that cold feels hot and vice versa.

[Edited to add: Another symptom of note associated with this toxin--the sensation of your teeth falling out.]

Really, you couldn't make this stuff up if you tried.
