Hello,

Ok, where to start? ....

My real name is Alex, I am 20 as of 2 days ago, I am male and I live in melbourne Australia. (Thought the basics were the best)

Mmm... I like bike riding, learning stuff. I play piano and would like to learn guitar. I have recently finished a networking course and will be going to University later this year to do a IT\Business combo.
I am quite into audio, having recently bought a new sterio, and I really like electronics.
I am in a relationship and looking to get married mid 2010.

I am also (if you couldn't already tell) terrible at spelling.

All in all I am into and interested in everything. I don't think there is one thing out there that I dislike.
If you would like to know anything else just ask.

I will pronounce your name "om gem bee", or "gemby" for short.

I'm Sean, from the UK, in my first year of a degree in Mathematics with French.

I just signed up because I needed help with my little sister's maths problem and I was guttered I couldn't actually help her, so I asked for help in the mathematics section :)

Long time reader of xkcd, only just decided to sign up to the forums. Nice to meet you all.

Hello everyone! I'm John, a 21 year-old male from Scotland.
Currently having a year off from a games design/computer programming degree at university. My interests include: gaming; most things sci-fi; alternative and classic rock; mathematics and physics.
I recently came across xkcd on my interweb travels and instantly fell in lust, and now I'm here.

Hello.

I am 20 years old and I'm in my second year of studies at the University of Toronto (the only university in Canada most people probably know about, lol). I am enrolled in a so-called "joint specialist program" called "Mathematics and Physics", whatever that means. But I failed one of my (1-semester) physics courses so I don't know what I'm going to do... I'm doing really well in analysis, though.

My greatest fear in making an account here is that I'll post only to ask about homework or some other equally stupid reason. My second greatest fear is that I'll never develop the level of humour that seems so plentiful on these the xkcd fora. Or maybe the latter is my greatest fear...

As for how I got here, one of my friends e-mailed me a link to xkcd, claiming that it was hilarious. Obviously, we can all attest to the correctness of his diagnosis :D

Hi all,

I'm Steve, currently enjoying a hot summer in Australia. I like software, music, and a good ale. Preferably at the same time.

My favourite xkcd comic is either 90's Flowchart or Drapes.

I'm Katie. I'm a 21y/o student from England, studying Fine Art Photography (but I'm not a fine art photographer). I am "writing my dissertation" (aka procrastinating) at the moment - I have just over 5k words to write in the next 12 hours. (So, theoretically, I should be writing, but instead, I am mucking around signing up to new forums to waste time on, like you do.)

I've been reading xkcd for ages and got hooked after Randall kept writing about my life. (For instance, the cuddle mattress comic (one of my favourites) was published the day after I had almost exactly that conversation with someone. (We didn't add the BattleBots game.))

Er. I am lost for what to say that will actually be interesting to other people. I've written significantly more about myself elsewhere, but I can't post links yet, so... you have Google-fu, probably. *shrugs*

Howdy 'dar! Just another nerdy chap from down south who enjoys the fora far too much to simply lurk.

Base stats:
20.
Currently work at Advance Auto Parts; will ask if you'd like cheese (is not burning me) or pepperonni on your rotors in the most polite fashion.
Paying off student debt from Digital Media, Architecture, and Aerospace Design whims.
Shipping off to boot camp on Feb 18, '09 /20090218.
Going into the Navy's Nuclear program to become a EM.
AKA the 'Culinary Abortionist' by friends and victims alike.
Thinks himself a swell fellow.
"Velocirators?," inquired The Philosoraptor. "More like VELAWESOMERAPTOS!"

Banned here. Reborn better, stronger, faster. And yes, that's what she said.

Shifting between painter / musician / mathematician / Spider-Man / physicist / environmentalist / Ultimate Spider-Man / graphics artist / cute-arse self-loathing nihilist misanthrope / writer / coder / left-winged activist / Captain-Man / Captain Captain-man

Extremely against 'a/s/l' for the simple rationale 'If it's relevant to you for what you think of some string of text on a board I do not want you to have it, if it's not relevant to you why waste glucose?' Other objectivist ideals to impose upon the public at large include: Atheism is not scientific, there is a big difference between not believing that x is true because there is no reason to believe x is true (scientific) and believing x is not true because there is no reason to believe x is true (common logical fallacy also known as the argument from ignorance); conditioning every-one to accept that the argument from authority is a fallacy once I have taken over the world with some satellite with a laser. It is not relevant who makes an argument or even that some-one makes it, it is relevant to demonstrate that an argument exists, saying that some-thing is true, regardless of who says it is not an argument, lastly: 'magical ages' like the age of consent, age to vote, age to drive and so on are guessed at whim by a bunch of politicians who know nothing about the case and just guess it based on some gut feeling influenced by some Pavlovianly induced moral and they do not mean any-thing, and do not take into account that different people have different capabilities at different age, legislative discrimination in effect. In reality this is a clever scam to have sex with children tucked in a scientific aurora, keep the secret, spread the word. Dawkins and Randi are posers like Abbath Doom Occulta.

I go directly against Fowler and use octopodes, commata as standard plurals. Je vis la vie bohème.

I really enjoy the comic, and have even gone through the Blag once or twice. I'm even considering getting a shirt, so I can be the coolest guy I know. Anyway, hope to see you guys around and stuff.

Not really directed at you specifically but at any-one who does this... but ehhrr.. why is one cool or even funny if one is wearing a shirt with a joke another invented and tonnes of other people also have. It's like making the 'no women or IRC'-trite. I have some shirts with funny texts, but I designed them myself and had them printed. My favourite being: 'Creationism: A combination of mathematics and biology respectively. Reasoning solely from your axioms while ignoring all empirical evidence and doing so incoherently.'

Well, I did specify that if I had the shirt I would've been the coolest guy I know.

Forgetting the cool part, I'd probably just get it to enjoy it myself, and maybe get a few cheap laughs out of some kids that walk past.

You have to admit, though, that there is a certain level of subculture identifying here. By that I mean, by wearing a "witty" geek t-shirt, or a t-shirt that proudly reads "geek", you are not showing that you're geeky; you're showing that you'd like others to consider you a geek - because you want to belong to a given subculture. This is exactly why people wear identical clothing when they "join" a clique. (Of course, there are people who simply like the clothing, but you can tell by proximity to stereotype.)

If you truly wanted to communicate your geekness, the best way to do so is to do it very much under the radar. For example, while a t-shirt reading "I am a geek" (which you can, sadly, get) is instantly obvious to everyone what you are attempting to be seen as. However, if you wear something which communicates to like-minded people, while remaining inconspicuous to the uninitiated, you will be able to signal to other geeks that you are one, and yet not be seen as attempting to conform, because nobody but those already affiliated have any idea.

And this, my friends, is why I have a t-shirt that is completely blank except for a Debian swirl. To anyone but geeks, it is just a pretty spiral.

Ahoy there! Thought it was about time I started posting here, been lurking for a while. Needing a new place to spend my time on the interbutts, my regular haunt has just disappeared...

So, sup? I'm Matt. I'm also very, very happy 90% of the time. I can't help it. It's great fun. It's also especially ironic because I'm a nihilist, something I've never found depressing :P I am, to all extents, a hippie, and I have an absolutely horrendous sense of humour. There's humour in everything, so I gallantly take it upon myself to stand there and laugh at it. I do love geeking out about things. I'm immensely interested in history and science, one of the reasons xkcd is so appealing. Also it's bloody funny. I've got one of the most varied tastes in music I know. I listen to anything as long as it's good. Sometimes even when it's not...

Hmm. I never really know what to say in intro threads, trying to sum yourself up in a paragraph. I got to a couple of lines at it felt a bit forced. I'm sure you'll get to know me. Suffice to say I spend my time on forums making crass jokes, deluding myself into thinking I'm a viking and forgetting to hit reply a lot :P

Ahoy, me hearties.

Postby OBrien » Fri Jan 23, 2009 2:12 am UTC

Hello there eveyone. I joined your lovely forum today so I could post a thread in the Helpdesk forum, due to my housemate's laptop breaking down on her. I then spent a couple of hours pissing about in your Forum games section, while waiting for replies, and discovered that the people on this forum are, in fact, a sound bunch, so I decided to join.
My name is Nicolas (yes, the lack of a "h" is intentional, it's actually spelt that way), I'm 19, male and was born in London, but now live in Birmingham, due to being a student of Mathematics at the University of Birmingham. My hobbies include rocking out (not that you'd guess from the length of my hair), pubbing, clubbing, animus and generally anything that helps me to avoid doing any actual work.
I'm very pleased to meet you all!
