Hello,
My name is Jesus, i've been reading xkcd for around two years now, well, at least it feels like two years.
Anyway, just today I noticed that these boards existed and so here I am. er, a couple hobbies of mine are explaining things with dissimiles, and studying psychoanalysis.
woot.

I am reminded of the "hey Zeus" scene in Die hard 3.

Can you give an example for explaining something with a dissimile?

It is, for the most part, extreme. With a little badass thrown in from time to time. I mostly fly around beating up bears who mean harm to the people of the land. But they don't really need much help, because they are all pretty badass. Every now and then pirates try to raid our land, but instead of doing battle with them, we gather all of our bearded men and line them up on the coast. We then proceed to have a beard-off with the pirates. The pirates never win. It's a fairly exciting place, even if it may only exist in my imagination.

Explaining things with dissimiles is a lot like teaching kids how to write, except with dissimiles you don't actually have to teach anything and there's no children. :|

Hello everybody, I'm e. I know an approximation to a mathematical constant isn't the most original username, but I'm terrible at coming up with names.

Anyway, about myself:

I'm currently working towards a BSME at a fairly major university.

I've been a lurker here for quite a while (since not long after I found xkcd, which would be before I started college . . . wow, that is a long time), but I never registered an account out of fear that I would waste too much time on here. This is somewhat fallacious reasoning on my part: I already waste too much time on here, so might as well register and start posting. (Also, I'm very much an introvert, which contributed to my lack-of-posting-here.)

I have a set of fairly esoteric hobbies (which, because they're the most genuinely interesting things about me, tend to get used for icebreakers way too much, but whatever): melting and casting metal, machining, forging, and welding. They all kind of go together. Oh, and ceramics, which started as kind of an offshoot of casting metal but took on something of a life of its own. I do (rather, have done) art ceramics stuff as well, but I don't really have the equipment or time (or time to build the equipment) to do it right at home. I'm definitely more interested in the technical side of art ceramics than the creative side (which says something about my personality), but I like both.

Since I could write about my hobbies until my fingers fell off (actually I already have, so to speak: I'm in the process of writing a book about metalcasting), I'll leave it there unless someone wants to know more.

If there's anything else somebody wants to know about me, feel free to ask.

Hello

I've been lurking around this forum long enough for it to start feeling creepy, so I've decided to get an account and try to actually participate.

I'm a high school student from Idaho. I found xkcd, well, I don't remember when, but it's amazing and so are the forums.

My main hobby is making music, which isn't nearly so original as metalcasting. (What does one metalcast, 2.718...?)

Mostly machining blanks and other somewhat-boring stuff. I haven't cast much recently because molten metal is kind of frowned on in the dorms at college. (Their contract specifically bans soldering irons, among other things. Clearly they're wise to the ways of the engineering student.)

Here are some pictures:
Spoiler:
Image
This was for a milling attachment for my lathe. I ended up getting a mill eventually instead, but it proved to be an interesting challenge to cast something that large. This is a rather old picture.

Image
Two pulley blanks and the belts that go on them, cleaned up slightly. This was part of a wood chipper I built. Also a pretty old picture.

Image
Here's something I did more recently. I tried to cast a paper airplane. Obviously it didn't turn out. I kind of knew that was going to happen--I was pushing the limits of the process on purpose. This is actually for a thin casting contest, and it turned out pretty thin, just not complete.

Even if its not what its supposed to be, I kind of like the look of that last thing and would happily put it on my wall. Somehow.

Hi, I'm Dave, a typically atypical highschool nerd. I, like so many others in this thread, have been lurking for about a year now. I finally had too much to say to not register, so here I am. I do things like competitive rocketry, debate, fencing, historical time-wasting, and walking around with my "Just Shy, not antisocial (you can talk to me!)" t-shirt.

Haha, I bought that shirt too. But I've become a bit less shy recently, completely unrelated to said shirt. It feels a little weird to wear it when I'm chatting up a storm, but hey.

Heh, yeah, it's one of the few things I've scraped up the money to buy in a while. Definitely worthwhile. I've been actively striving to become more social and likable in general (there're teenage hormones for you), my underlying nerdiness is inescapable.

My name is Andrew, 15 years old.

I've been lurking xkcd for about 4 or five months before I created this account.

Hobbies I have are creating pixel art (somewhat good, but still learning), game design, robotics, engineering, and other crap I'd rather not mention.

I listen to pretty much any music and kick ass at DDR.

Hi everyone, it's nice to meet you, I'm phage!

I am a student, and I enjoy reading webcomics (especially xkcd :D ), looking things up on the Internet (I should really cut back on my Internet usage), and learning new things.

As you may have gathered from my username, I enjoy science and math and I especially love learning new and interesting things relating to these subjects.

I came across these forums quite some time ago, after I had discovered xkcd, but I mostly lurked and did not decide to register an account until recently.

Feel free to ask me anything that you want. :D

No, I have never played MTG. (I seem to be in the minority here.)

My inspiration came from these phages, after I learned how they were used to determine that DNA was genetic material in this experiment.
