Welcome all!

xyweasel, if you want to learn about a silly parody on evolution of language there is a thread where a dialect evolved (warning, that tread is massive). Also there are real language discussions there and some attempts at decoding a language in the comic it's about (Randall invented what we call Beanish, but he had lots of help from experts in how to construct the language).

Oh yes, I read the first part of that thread when Time came out. I think I found someone had taken every frame of that comic and compiled it into a slideshow somewhere. And on the subject of languages, xkcd introduced me to lojban a long time ago.

Hey, I'm Corey. 26/m/US

I'm a developer with interests and research in cryptography but my day to day job lands me in web development. I work mostly in C# but Go has really been growing on me and I love hearing about the esoteric languages but I rarely do anything with them.

I've never been one to join forums but I think I'll give it a try. I've already got a couple posts here but I'm going to try and be truly active this time around.

Good luck! Just wondering, how did you get here? There's no longer a link to the forum from the main xkcd page, did you just google "xkcd forums" or something?

Hej!

I stumbled upon xkcd forums by sheer randomness known as internet. In my spare time I try to tinker with Linux and listen to as much music as possible.

I don't like KDE because it has (or had if you will, not sure about the newer versions) plenty of performance issues. However, I find myself comfortable using small tiling window managers such as i3.

I'm not new so I'm not going to introduce myself again. I've been using this account pretty much entirely to post dreams and indulge delusions that are symptoms of psychological conditions I have, but that's stupid so I was thinking of posting normally. Or getting banned. Or whatever.

Finally found the intro thread!

Greetings. I was on the lookout for a forum to just chat and have banter and whatnot. It was the Mafia section that made it come up in a google search, I enjoy playing those games. I'm a computer scientist researching Artificial intelligence, although most of the time I can only find work in software engineering.

I'm currently living in Scotland but have also lived in Germany and might well end up moving back there.

Hello, guys. My name is Emily, I'm 20 years old. I like this forum from what I have seen of it, but I guess the proof is in the pudding, I'll just have to see how things go. I'm always a bit nervous about trying to join a new forum. Usually I just get overwhelmed by the number of members and can't keep track of anyone, but this one seems reasonably sized.
What else to say about me? I'm (obviously) a big fan of xkcd. I'm a Christian and a writer. I want to major in archaeology. See you around I guess?

Hi Emily, are you in uni already and studying archeology? Which country do you live in? Are you required to study Latin? Here (in Germany) the archeology students have to.

I live in the US so nope, we are only required to take 3 quarters of any foreign language, at least, at the level I am at. Even some of those can be filled by High School, however. After this quarter I will have filled my foreign language requirements. There may be more at University level. I am in community college still. I might even switch major I'm not sure. But right now I really like this idea. Technically I am currently working towards Associate of Science.
The language I am taking is Spanish. It's more practical than Latin anyways, both in real life and for the kind of archaeology I want to do since my dream is to go to South America.

This is the "Hi, I'm here; don't mind me" thread, yes?

I wrote a quick and somewhat vague introduction to myself, but it appears that something there hit the newbie spam-word filter, when I previewed. Not sure what (not going to experiment, and I already know nobody will tell me), so I'll leave this as the placeholder you see. I may re-expand on it when I'm later allowed to again.

Yes, that's what I was thinking. It wasn't a link (I was scrupulous in not doing that!), and pasting the extracted test in below and re-Previewing does not tell me I am in danger of spamming, this time round, so I lost my chance to find the keyword(s) that may have prohibited it. (Though it no longer appears to me to be as well written as I believed. Perhaps it's an advancement on XKCD #810? <- can't link that, obviously!>)

This being my fourth (edit:fifth, apparently... miscounted?) post, I haven't passed the five-post limit for newbies, yet, so it was probably a 'zero approved posts so far' limiter, or I've been given a pass.

FWIW, now quoting my originally extracted intro text... Note the now-ironic "do tell me if I talk too much".

Spoiler:
Assuming yes, this should now be my second post here (moderator approval allowing). Long-time casual reader of the forum (but longer-time rabid reader of XKCD in general!), and then I decided to go for membership.

(It was only after joining that I had actually access to the members list and discovered that my long-considered username is most notably confusable with a pre-existing and recently active member (Soup) of 287 messages. There's also a Spoon_of_Doom and Spork and Sporkify, but they seem less active.)

Anyway, excuse me while I edge in here. Do tell me if I talk too much (I also do hope not to stick to just two messages in total!). I'll get an avatar and set various other things when I get round to it. Though first I think I've got to 'officially' read all threads that I've browsed whilst unregistered, for the sake of my CDO1

As to who I am, I like to leave some mystery but: I'm not a young person; I am a male one; I'm British.

And I yet aspire towards being a specialist in all things - despite knowing that I'm doomed to fail. So I'll probably be wrong about some contributions. Again, do let me know.

1 That's something like OCD, but in alphabetical order like it ought to be!

...and now I'll have to let my presence stand on its own merits, for better or worse. Hello again. I've still a lot of backlog to 'read', and thus a lot of necroing to resist so let's see how that works out.

Well then: Welcome.

Soupspoon wrote:And I yet aspire towards being a specialist in all things - despite knowing that I'm doomed to fail.
That's called being a generalist IMHO, and I have sporadically seen generalists that were better than the specialists in the chosen field of the specialist. So it's not quite doomed to fail, although there is a high risk of thinking you are better than the specialist.

I'm a generalist too.

About talking too much: If you adhere to the forum rules you are almost by definition limited to not talking too much. This is, however, a forum with many active users (200 in the past 5 minutes, of writing this) so the general guideline in the last part of rule 6: "If you don't have anything to contribute to the conversation, then by all means don't." is something of import in this regard.

I'd like too stress the "anything" part: don't fear your post isn't worthy because it lacks the amount of new information that belongs in Nature or Science. For example, I'm posting this just to point it out.
Oh, and 200 active users may sound scary, but for a couple of subfora/subforums (<- this could've been a link to religious wars if only there were one about forum pluralisation) you can count the number of posts per day on one hand.

Lest I forget: hello, this is my introduction.
I usually go by the name Flumble on the interblags. a/s/l: 18+, no, penis. (For those pronoun-away, I'm fine with any of he/him/his/they/them/their/she/her/her/schly/schlim/schlur/One/Her Sir/Me/m8.) My interests are the hard sciences, coding, discussing trivial matters in great depth ridiculous tangents and my mindbrain. I'll accept anything "for the sake of argument", but I'm highly sceptical of anything being "true" –e.g. I accept physics formulas because they correlate really well with my perception, while the converse holds for a personal god. Come to think of it, it means I roughly pass every proposition ("fact") through an Occam's razor and descriptivism filter. And if it passes, it's probably true. That's how I know that one apple and another apple is more than one apple and that life is meaningless.

Why is this place so hard to find? I've been in the revolving doors twice.

I think I had a link in my seventh post, due to the nature of the game I created. Close one, though.

[EDIT] After the ninth I believe, though not counted as a post, as it was in Games. Nice to meet you lot anyway.

Hi. My name is thunk. At least, that's the name I go by online.

I'm 19 years old, and a student studying a STEM field or two at a large state university in the Midwest.

As for my gender, well... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. To be honest, I don't know any better at this point. (but she/her=they/them>anything else>>he/his, when it comes to pronoun choice.)

I'm somewhat of a science nerd, and of course, I've been reading Default Webcomic for 10 or so years. Randall's probably shaped much of my worldview, and this has been for the better. But geography, history, and linguistics are cool too.

I don't get out much in meatspace, but I can also be found on the conwaylife.com forums and foldit, where I do stuff (or at least used to). I also used to be in some other places, but not anymore, mainly due to philosophical differences.
