I'm partschmants and known by the same on reddit. I came here to post about the respect thread that was posted on there about the black hat character, but couldn't because reddit urls are apparently blocked when posted in threads...

So there's no excuse to be missing [the Intro Thread]

Well I have. For years! I'm sorry, didn't mean to be a jerk.
I'm a guy, in his twenties (still the first half, not for long though). Italian. Proud of it.
Lived some in Alabama and some in the UK.
I've been following the fora and, obviously, xkcd for quite some time now, but I do not write too much. Perhaps I will do more.
I am graduating in CS while working, but not sure what I will do next - besides a long trip.
I've always been torn apart by my two emisphere's, but I am learning to reconcile them.
I am interested in pretty much everything, and I get easily excited.
I tried to say what I enjoy the most in life, but I was too undecided!!

Hi everyone : )

    1. I am not a bot and LOVE rainbows and the ocean
    2. I aspire to be a yoga teacher and finish at least the Primary Series before I die
    3. I am not inclined to maturity unless absolutely necessary
    4. Intelligence is sexy
    5. Blueberry Mojitos are yummy
    6. I do not fit in many of society's boxes, except I fully accept my assigned by birth gender.
    7. I can be rather crude and vulgar at times, and as shy as a virgin in a whorehouse other times
    8. I may never grow up

Hi! I adjusted your post. As a general rule, we aren't a fan of posts all of a different color or nonstandard sizing.

Don't get me wrong - if there's a good reason for it, or it's a word or snippet for emphasis - knock yourself out.

But as a general rule? Black of standard size.

Hi, I'm Coffeehaus! Despite the username, I am not German myself, nor is anyone in my extended family. In fact, the entire Atlantic ocean separates me and Europe. Why did I put something German in my username if I am not affiliated with anything German? Good question! I'm at the quite juvenile age of 14. and I live in America, where the eagles have red, white and blue feathers and there are greasy fast food places so closely packed together that if one more joins in it forms a chubby singularity.

Hi, people, I'm Black Swan. Apparently this abbreviates to BS, which I didn't think of when chosing this username. Oh well. I'm just some university student from [REDACTED], and unlike all of these motivated people on the previous pages, I still have no idea what I want to do with my life. My hobbies include photography and travelling; as you may imagine, they make a good combination (I'm also thinking of taking up hiking.) I'm not a gamer, but I am (or try to be) a reader and a moviegoer. Also, my irl social skills are pretty terrible, although (I think) they've been getting better recently; hopefully I won't be as bad online. :P Guess that's pretty much it. Um... yep.

Oh, hai, just found the intro thread.

Joined the forum a couple days ago, partly because I wanted to post a link to a piece of music I am making that was originally inspired by the Philae Lander comic. Found that I had to like egshelly join the conversation before I could post links, and then I got sucked in. So here I am.

I am a social science researcher with a strong interest in, well, science, sarcasm and romance (math is not my strong suit). I head up a small research unit on agriculture, land reform, poverty and food systems issues. I live in Cape Town, South Africa, on the western slopes of Table Mountain. Think beautiful views, sunsets over the sea and howling gales for most of the year.

I am an avid reader of science fiction. I hate watching science fiction movies since they have become so silly (the last SF movie I really enjoyed was Primer).(*) My most exciting recent read was Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie; my best reads of last year were Dead Water, Weight of Numbers and Wolves by Simon Ings, all three of which are brutal reads in a nasty and intimate way which I found I liked very much.

I am an equally avid consumer and maker of music. I tend towards the electronic side of things from the cerebral (Autechre, Amon Tobin, etc) to the profane (stomping around in the mud at dance festivals).

When I make music it tends to veer between beat-driven chill stuff influenced between deep house and techno.

My soundcloud is in my signature.

My only other significant web forum presence is on the Ableton Live forum, where I am known as re:dream. This forum seems to be much better managed, I must say. On the Abes forum we have spammers up the wazoo and ill tempered flame wars between otherwise mild mannered people.

What else?

The time difference means that xkcd arrives on my computer screen at breakfast time.

And: I will post the Philae Lander track when it is good and ready. At the moment the mix still sucks.

(*) Edit: Lies, of course. District 9 also rocked.

Hey there, I'm ZabetTheRabbit. Or Zabet for short, if you want. Since, despite all appearances I am not actually a rabbit. Sorry to disappoint.

Anyways, here I am. To introduce myself. I love books, music, science, and learning. I hate olives. I joined up because 1. I read XKCD. 2. This seems like a fun, well organized place to be. That's really all I have to say on the matter, so see ya around I guess.

(Oh, I am also a horrendous speller and spellcheck can't catch them all. So apologies in advance for any egregious errors.)

Hello,

My name is Mikaël, I live in southern France and I've been reading xkcd for a while.

I spend most of my time dreaming geeky things up. In the last couple of years, it has mostly involved Unix, music and interfaces.
Also, category theory.

In my book, "networking" is not about people. But for a few short years, I've been trying hard to change my ways. Nevertheless, I'm still in my own world most of the time. Machines are just so much simpler...

The reason I came to this forum - which, for me, has all the appeal of a beehive - is because of this recent drive of mine to connect. To be exact, I recently invented something slightly crazier than usual, I wrote a paper about it and then I realized it needed peer review. And since xkcd's Map of the Internet was an important influence for this idea, it seemed natural that my fellow xkcd readers should be counted as my peers. I don't believe anyone here will take offence at being described as "slightly crazier than usual"?

Well anyway, I then just barged in on the Math forum with a link to my paper and was moderated into oblivion, which made me throw some mighty fit of rage. So much for picking up social skills through abstract study... And then my second, less assuming post was accepted, So I started exploring the forums, read for a few hours, found the intro thread, and here I am talking about me.

And let me just say that I've been pretty impressed by some of the things I've read so far.

So, well... let's just keep having fun and make the world a better place, I guess?

Note that early posts are auto-moderated by a number of tools to keep the spambots tame. Links, among other things, are delt with with extreme prejudice.

It is possible that no human saw your effort. Stay around a while, post more, and then try again, *if* no moderator contacted you.

But then I read about the barrage of spam the moderators have to put up with, so I now understand the importance of their work.

Hi everyone.

I'm a phd student in Physics, which practically makes it inevitable that I love xkcd. In fact I've been reading the comic strip since 2006 and have even occasionally followed discussions on the forum, but until now had never registered myself, mostly to save myself from yet another possibility of doing something other that what I'm supposed to be doing.

To be perfectly honest, there is a selfish reason for my registration that I want to disclose right off the start: I recently started a blog about Physics-y stuff, and I'm planning to eventually blatantly advertise it. Well, maybe not blatantly. I won't post a link here, for example, and I will only post links in relevant discussions, with some explanation. I hope that's OK? I do think that some people here might find it interesting.

Maybe a bit more personal information to finish my introduction: I come from what one might call a 'second-world' country, if the term existed, but live and work in an undoubtedly first-world one. Both in Europe. Oh, which reminds me that I also love travelling.

The term exists. It may even predate the "Third World" term that is far better known.

At one point, the iron curtain was described as separating the world into "two worlds" -- the First World of the "west" (Liberal Capitalist Democracies, more or less), and the Second World of various Communist states (USSR and China). The Third World was then those that belonged to neither -- the "hinterlands" of the world, which where underdeveloped and poor. It was in this Third World that the superpowers in the First and Second Worlds battled in proxy wars, because direct conflict was viewed as too dangerous.

The Second World term is mostly obsolete, but the First and Third World names remain.
