What did you get for christmas?

Postby liberalkid » Thu Dec 26, 2013 1:08 am UTC

I got:

New Super Luigi U on Wii U
Super Mario 3d World on Wii U
Gran Turismo 6 on PS3
God of War Saga on PS3
Battlefield 4 on PS4
a 16GB Memory Card for my PS Vita
and a hit from the ban hammer

I'm an only child, so I get a lot :p

So, what did you get? :)

Did I stutter?

Ho ho ho, Merry Christmas!

A board game, a t-shirt, a quiz game, and £50.

I'm not usually bothered about christmas gifts as I can get whatever I want on the computer, but participate because of social convention. Actually seeing family and socializing is nicer.

The Complete Calvin and Hobbes :D

4L roundbottom beaker.

I was never a fan of em. The thickness is great and all, but you need to clamp em to scaffolding or something. What're you planning to do with it? O.o

Yeah, C&H is up there with Sandman and Transmet for 'comics you must own'.

My mind first registered that as that other C&H comic and I wondered why it's on the list of comics you must own.

On topic:
I got an apple! (as in a piece of fruit, note the lowercase 'a')
Also some chocolate.

I guess we don't really celebrate christmas.

The Feynman Lectures.
A beard trimmer. I had a pretty good beard going before I experimented with my beard trimmer. The results of the experimentation were unsalvageable, though, and I had to shave the whole thing off and start over. The nosehair trimmer will be forever useful though.

* Britta filter jug w/ extra filters that I've already exchanged for the kind that snaps onto your faucet. I didn't get extra filters since I want to be sure I'll like it before I spend extra money.
* Air drumsticks that make sounds when you swing them without hitting anything. They only make 3 sounds, no ride symbol, and you have to hold down buttons to make the sounds. I've returned these for cash.
* A shirt I didn't need and was too small; also returned for cash.
* $50 bill. I wouldn't normally consider cash an interesting present. But, getting an unusual denomination of bill means that when I spend it, I will be aware that this is Christmas money as opposed to the $20s I get from the ATM, so it will feel like I'm getting a gift at that time instead of spending my own hard-earned cash.
* Brookstone sand; supposedly it sticks to itself and nothing else so you can sculpt things out of it.
* A kit to build a small solar powered robot. There's 3 designs on the box (humanoid, scorpion and tank), but only enough parts to build one at a time.
* Can gitty: a 1-string guitar that uses a tin can to amplify the sound. It'd be awesome if it were fretted chromatically instead of diatonically. It's like having a keyboard that only has white keys.
* Harold and Kumar trilogy on DVD, obtained via a Yankee Swap. I'd originally gotten the jigsaw puzzles and BK gift card that I'd contributed back. But, everyone else had also brought combos of stuff to reach the $25 limit, so after the YS swapping, everyone started trading bits of their packages for bits of other packages. My uncle gave me a Christmas Story leg lamp ornament for two puzzles, which I traded to my cousin for the DVDs.

So far, I've enjoyed assembling the bookcase I got for my parents more than anything they got me, though I haven't tried that solar robot kit yet. The $50, plus what I got for returning the other stuff, covers the $80 I spent buying the rest of Transmetropolitan last week.

The Complete Calvin & Hobbes is a great gift. I thought of getting it for myself, but I already own the complete series in smaller books, so I wouldn't gain much other than having one book's worth of Sunday comics in color instead of B&W.

I would like to own the C&H book eventually... picked it up in Barnes and Noble a few weeks ago but was a little short.

I got yarn, a pair of bamboo knitting needles, a book of crochet patterns and a new messenger bag for my laptop (I had been using my regular backpack because it's a 17.3" screen and I was too cheap to go out and buy a quality bag for myself, since those were pretty difficult and expensive to find). Pretty nice haul.

Cast iron? I hope it's cast iron.

I got a t-shirt, a football jersey, and a chromecast. It was a good year.

Nothing wrong with that!

My biggest and most exciting gift was a good set of kitchen knives. A book I'll finish in 5-20 hours. A really good video game might amuse me for 40 or 50 hours. These knives, if I take good care of them, I will end up using for a few minutes a day for a decade or more.

That's pretty exciting.

Fifty bucks and a wide open town!

And I'm only now posting this here because I only now came up with the suggestive description. I try to avoid gift exchanges, especially on holidays and birthdays. But my mom really likes presents, so we exchange gifts. She gave me the $50, specifically earmarked to for me to buy a board game at my local gaming store. A boyfriend of mine claimed that the book he bought me was not a gift for any occasion, just buying me a book I'd been talking about not being able to get from the library, but he gave me the book just a week or two before Christmas. The title of the book is "Wide-Open Town: A History of Queer San Francisco to 1965."

This was, for me, a year of Hats.

1. warm fuzzy rabbit-fur hat - it's like a cat sleeping on your head. Very warm, also good for the sub-zero temperatures that I have to work in sometimes.
2. totally sweet black trilby, with herringbone pattern, for when in the office.
3. White panama, black and dark grey stripe.

and then a knit cap (which the fuzzy hat obviates, buts its nice for cool but not cold days).

Also some nice work boots.

And then my amazing wife made me a custom Lego minifig of Matt Smith as the Doctor with a light-up sonic screwdriver, and she taught herself to solder to make it. It is very cool.

A Cuisinart ice cream maker.
A limited edition design wrap for babywearing. It's a ginkgo design, which matches my tattoo and my wedding ring, so I splurged a little on it (Christmas present to myself bought with gift money from inlaws).

I got a nice Barbour jacket from my family, a new tie, a t-shirt that shows the evolution of climbers (Darwin-esque, really good.)

My best present by far, a china TARDIS money box. Dr Who and saving money? Win.

Also got to spend a week in Wales with my wife and friends in a cottage on the top of a valley, that was a really good present that I bought myself :)

A box full of Lem. (Stanislaw Lem is my favorite writer, and I'm always loaning out my Lem books, so often that I never seem to have many left. So now I have copies of most? all? of his books that have been translated into english, plus multiple copies of a few of them. The only thing I'm missing now is the new translation of solaris.)
