The majority of people are borderline sociopaths who'd step over your corpse for a better parking space, and yet they won't hesitate to pass howling judgment on you if you screw up in even the most minute, insignificant way. Just one more reason to not screw up.

I made a Pandora station from Florence + The Machine's "Drumming Song" and now all it's playing is songs written by Yoko Kanno for Ghost in The Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

... I'll be needing some volunteers for a scientific study:

- Go to the TvTropes main page, then click Random.
- Every five minutes, record how many tabs you have open.
- Come back with your data when you manage to tear yourself away.
- There will be cake afterwards.

You can't escape TvTropes, unless you read em' all, but even if you read em' all, you will read em' all again. The cake will never be yours.

you're not gonna post yours?

ok i'll go.

i remember discovering that i had the ability to move my eyes independantly from my skull.

I was sitting on a dining room chair looking around, and it dawned on me: i could look left without actually moving my head left!

then an idea occured! i could look right without moving my head right! It was like my eyes moved on their own.

Then, a flash of brilliance occured! I could turn my head right, and move my eyes left to see what was in front of me! It was amazing! I was like some sort of super power. I sat in that little chair for what seemed like ages just moving my eyes every which way, amazed at my discovery.

NOTE1: I was probably less than 3 or so.
NOTE2: I'm sure I had the ability to do all that before, i just never realized i was doing it, or could do it consciously.
NOTE3: Being a kid must be amazing. Now adays I would have to discover a new species of tree frog to get that feeling, but to a 2ish year old all I needed was "OH MY GOD MY EYES CAN MOVE!"

You could probably write a Firefox extension or something that records how many TVTropes tabs you have open over time... save you from the possibility of losing track of time while reading and forgetting to make a measurement, and also to stop the act of taking the measurement from interfering with you getting lost in the site (it'll keep you conscious of how many tabs you have open, and thus you'll be less likely to unthinkingly just open a pile of tabs while reading through a page)...

Code: Select all

enum ಠ_ಠ {°□°╰=1, °Д°╰, ಠ益ಠ╰};
void ┻━┻︵╰(ಠ_ಠ ⚠) {exit((int)⚠);}

O minutes - 1 tab.
5 minutes - 8 tabs.
12 minutes - 16 tabs.
14 minutes - 17 tabs.
Experiment halted.

Good point. Or on that note: limit the browser to only X TvTropes pages at a time. That'd be a nightmare. :(

EDIT: I'd expect a sizable tabsplosion in the beginning (caused by reading a big page, for example), followed by a steady increase as you start reading the less-detailed pages. If your browsing habits are anything like mine, I mean.

You could see that at a certain point I lost track of time and the intervals are now skewed. Demonstrates Mag's hypothesis well.

I was three years old, and I was in the grocery store with my mother, sitting in the front of the shopping cart. My thought process started thusly:

"I am three. This is my first coherent* thought. Therefore, everyone must start out being three!"

My mother complimented another mother on her baby and asked how old it was. The mother said it was three years old.

"That baby is three. That confirms* it!"

My mother complimented another mother on her baby and asked how old it was. The mother said it was two years old.

"Aha! That baby is two! Everyone must start out being two!"

So apparently, I had no concept of age, but I had a concept of order (two comes before three) and the scientific method (forming a hypothesis, testing it with experiments, and revising the hypothesis with newly discovered data).

* No, I didn't know words like "coherent" or "confirm," but I had those concepts in mind even without the words to describe them.

Almost got me, but I managed to resist. I was on a TVTropes binge until 3 am a few nights ago...

My browsing habits seem like I open about 5 tabs per tab I close, but then there are times when I go through a few tabs without opening anything new, and a few pages (such as the pages for a TV series or something) where I open tons of tabs before closing that one and moving on.

I suppose I could try and record it... FOR SCIENCE!

I find it odd how the number of not-so-technically-inclined people question whether my things are some kind of apple product after they see them. Like come on... it's not only apple who make cool looking things. For one thing, if it's made by apple it has a huge apple logo on one side or another.
This seemed most odd when someone looked at my antec p180b case (A large ominous-looking gunmetal-black pc case) and commented "Oh is that one of those apple macs"...

Isn't it great when you find those products made by small companies that do exactly what you want? I found one recently, which was great till I just noticed it had just been reduced in price soon after... bah! Luckily it's still relatively cheaper than all the other options.

Edit:
On first memories:
Being in a water raft ride in a theme park (One of those round ones with seats facing inward) and looking across at my older brother looking over the edge getting splashed with water. Apparently this was at Alton Towers and I was around 2 or 3 years old.

I have three, very short ones:

1) Inventing a backstory to why I was the only one who could see my imaginary friend (invisible glasses that let you see invisible stuff!). ( I knew he wasn't real, I just wanted my games to be rational)
2) I remember the day-care, but I only remember one image of the place, as if it was a picture (but there aren't any pictures I could have seen later, it's a memory)
3) Learning what was "left" and "right", and crying when I realized that my mum's left wasn't the same that mine (because she was facing me to explain it)

My first memory is from when I was three. I remember being in my parents' kitchen, with my dad making cheese on toast under the grill.

It's kind of muddled but by my first memories are from the age of three. I don't remember which happened first.

One was where I was at my grandma's house and my mom was telling me to show my grandma how old I was. I'd put up four fingers and then my mom would fix it so that I had three. Then I would immediately go back to showing four. I was convinced I was right. To be honest, the clarity with which I remember this is better than most memories I have.

The other memory is in much less detail. Just waking up to a flash of light and a doctor in a mask looking down at me. For some reason I remember a cold metal table as well. This was apparently when I knocked out my two front teeth and they had just done oral surgery to remove them.

The best 'dated' memory I have is from when I was five. The reason I know this is because the entire memory consists of me saying "I'm five!" to my dad. Useful memory, I guess. Gets right to the point. :)

But I suspect that the earliest is a memory of me asking my mom if I could take a nap. She had my brother (Two years younger than me) in her lap, and he couldn't have been more than a year old. So that would put it at three years, which seems to be very common.

I also have a strong memory of an event at preschool. My preschool teacher gathered us around a fish tank (No fish in it, only water) and put several hot dog buns into the water. When we came back the next day, she had replaced them with hot dog wieners! I'm pretty sure that she tried to convince us that that was where they come from. You put buns in water and it comes out as wieners! I remember myself knowing that something was wrong.

I really wish I had remembered more context for that one...

Hmm, let me think.

It would be when I was 4(or 3) and a friend of mine pulled his shirt over his head and walked around like a crazy. Found that funny, don't know why I really remembered it.

TL/DR: coed bathrooms are good.

I'm sick of humanity. Can we just sit down and start treating each other like we're worth the same as each other?

And if you think you already do this, I have a news flash: You don't. None of us do. We all suck equally. Get over it.

Are you telling me that out of the ~7 billion people on Earth, not one of them is capable of treating people equally?

Actually, what does "treating people like they're worth the same" mean? If you mean "behave in exactly the same way towards every single person you meet like some kind of automaton", it's impossible because you deal with people in different situations. I mean, would you treat a complete stranger the same way as you would a member of your family? No, because that would be creepy and they might take advantage of your naïvity. Vice versa? No, because that would be cold.

Yes it's a silly example, but if you're gonna get all self righteous, it might help to define your terms.

1. thought it was tvtropes.com, and entered that
2. retype to check
3. googled "tvtropes"
4. clicked random
5. opened link in new tab (2 tvtropes tabs total)
6. got bored with first tab, and closed it (1 tab total)
7. got bored with second tab, clicked random
8. slowly increase to 5 tabs
9. got to Doctor Who (completely unrelated, but awesome, cuz it was linked from the random page)
10. slowly decrease to 1 tab
11. increase to 2
12. decrease to zero

obviously this is in steps...

Not really. I seem to be immune to it, too. Maybe it's because it's formatted horribly. I can barely finish reading the page I'm on before closing the tab.
