Can you please be more specific. The sifting scavenger hunt seems to make for a rotten vacation. Two steps and what not. It's a big place! Isolation interrogation has been peachy. Familiar face is always a plus. Cheers!

Gah, some buzzing thingy is behind my blind, but I can't see it...and I don't want to take up my blind, and then my home made sunscreen doohicky, in case it's a mad wasp which will fly at me and attack me - but now it's gone quiet and I don't know if it's just planning some kind of coup, or if my flailing wildly at my blind squished it...

I don't know why people are so surprised with Mel Gibson. Look at the roles he played! Mad Max, Lethal Weapon, Brave Heart, Ransom, Pay Back.........I could go on and on. Fact- He plays crazy MFRS. Don't even try throwing "what women want" (there's a joke somewhere) into the equation ( Sigh, I liked the movie). Are you surprised to find that he's a crazy MFR rather than an amazing/crazy actor? Astonishing! Keep rubbing that dishonest finger!

I wonder who was the first to come up with these translation games. In Galactic Pot-Healer the main character plays a game where the players try to decode imperfectly - or actually, word-to-word-perfectly - translated names of books or sayings. I read the book long time ago, but I think one element of the game was to use an automated translation service to translate text back and forth. If I remember correctly, it was used via regular telephone lines. (I really like the sort of retrofuturistic style of Dick. It naturally wasn't retrofuturistic back then.) The book was published in 1969 so the general idea is at least that old.

Good luck. Enjoy the few weeks worth of honeymoon period where everyone regards you as the newbie and doesn't expect you to actually do any work. :)

What job did you get? You on a graduate scheme of any sort?
Application developer (I think that's what I'm called). Not really a scheme or anything, just graduated in May, and got my first "real" job.

Also, the first day was soooo dull. Filled out my paperwork (but HR wasn't there, so I can't actually finish any of it till Wednesday), they didn't have my computer ready till 3pm (apparently almost no one was told I was coming till last Thursday, fun fun <_<), and I didn't really get too much of an orientation. It should be nice once I settle in though and actually know wtf to do.

They kinda showed me the software I'll be working on, but not really much more than "Well, this is what it looks like...".

Spoiler:
Pennsylvania
Ohio
Illinois (I nearly put Chicago as a state here, luckily I caught that one in time)
Arizona (poor Arizona, all on its lonesome due to plane travel)
Florida
South Carolina
Washington D.C. (which counts...? I guess...?)

Drive Though (yes, I will have fries with that):
Virginia
Indiana
Georgia
West Virginia
Maryland

This should totally be split off into a new topic, and then someone figures out how to make a pretty map with states highlighted (like a color for lived-in, visited, drove-through, ect.?).

We travel a lot.
Spoiler:
Bold Italics for states I've lived in.
Underline for states I've visited frequently.
Bold for states family members live/have lived/were born in.

States I've been to:
Arkansas --Go here for fun a lot (movies, the like). Brother born here.
Colorado -- Went to the mountains once.
Florida -- Vacations
Georgia -- drove through
Illinois --Mostly just to pass through to go to Michigan and Indiana
Indiana -- Visit family friends a few times.
Iowa -- Love Iowa. My dad was born here.
Kansas -- Lived here for a while. Brother born here.
Kentucky -- For fun and soccer tournaments
Maryland -- Around D.C. on vacation
Michigan -- I was born here.
Mississippi -- Drove through
Missouri -- Live here currently. Mom was born here.
North Carolina -- Went here with dad just so we could add a state.
Oklahoma -- Go to the lake here with mom's bf.
South Carolina -- Myrtle Beach vacation.
Tennessee -- For fun and soccer tournaments.
Texas -- Once when I was a wee babe.
Virginia -- Virginia Beach/ D.C. Vacation
West Virginia -- Passed through for above.

Non-state places I've been to:
Canada (we went shopping somewhere in Ontario when I was two)
Washington, D.C.

States family live(d) in that I would like to visit:
Ohio -- Grandpa born here. Just another conquest, really.
Nevada -- I have family in freaking VEGAS and I've never visited. That is so lame.
I of course want to get the rest of the states and quite a few more countries.

ETA: The map could be saturated with color based on what states xkcdians have been to. The darker the color, the more visited.
I wanted to see the universe, so I stole a Time Lord and ran away. And you were the only one mad enough.

Just had a minor computer glitch, a program wasn't doing what it should. I fiddled around with a couple of settings and that's made it work again. I'm happy that it is working, but I'm a bit worried that I have absolutely no idea why doing what I did made it work.

I just had a major computer glitch that has rendered the work I've been doing for the past several weeks unaccessable. There is literally no way to open this file any more because the error message says I need to fix something in the file itself and it refuses to let me open said file until I've fixed it.
