Bah...let me harken back to the days when we all lived in caves out here in Oregon. That...more than a decade ago time when I was in High School Math...

My calc teacher used cooking examples. I was already pre-interested in math though, so I can't help you really. I was just thinking about the Van Wilder scene where he used the, rather endowed, young lady to help teach college boys math.

It always annoys me when people on sci-fi shows In Space are celebrating birthdays. I get that there's a standardized galactic date, but it's still a little weird.

I don't see the problem. Surely a ship in interstellar space would maintain the calendar of whatever planet it was from.

What really bugs me is when movies are set on Mars, and the people are all walking as if there were earthlike gravity.

But that makes birthdays meaningless, since you'd have an Earth birthday once every 365.25 days, a Mars birthday every 686.9 days, a Gallifreyan birthday every X days... And when there are hundreds of planets in a 'verse, presumably all with different orbital periods, who decides the length of one second?

I don't think I get what you're saying. I mean, even if you have crew members from different planets, and even if there's time dilation involved, it still shouldn't be too hard to calculate what date it is on a given planet. As for the length of one second, I'm assuming there would be a standard system of measurement at least among human-populated worlds.

I guess I don't see the problem either. Why exactly does the rotation around the sun mean anything? It doesn't. It's an excuse to paaaaaarttty. So why the hell not keep track of it and at least enjoy yourself every so often in the deep cold unforgiving heart of space.

EDIT: I reserve the right to change the above in the future to restrict its meaning further.

Until the rest of the universe comes up with a better definition, and lets us know about it, we'll just have to keep using the caesium-133 thing.

I haven't had "the spark" for a very long time. Years, in fact. Sorry I can't help you.

Based on my experience, I think the spark is something that goes out and stays out. By something I mean youthful optimism and/or idealism. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

My thought-accent alternates between none in particular, Scottish, Welsh, Australian, and less commonly, German, and something Caribbean-ish.

Related: it's sort of cool/weird/whatever that I often think in English, even though it's neither my native language, nor the native language of anyone in my immediate family. Between TV and the Internet, English is just so common that I've picked it up on my own.
