Huzzah! I've been given more work, but it's work that I can do to not do that other work I need to do until some nebulous time in the future where I might not mind doing it as much because I'll be annoyed with this work.

I've got a question about trains.
I was waiting for the commuter rail to go by, and I noticed the front most wheel on the engine car had a thin exit nozzle aimed towards the rear of the train, about 6 inches above the tracks, at the wheels.

What the hell is this nozzle expelling? My first thought was warm air or emulsifiers to help keep the front wheels clear or water and oil, but it was only on the front most wheel. Maybe it sprays de-icer on the tracks, and the other wheels just pick it up?

Was it the front set of wheels on every carriage, or just the engine car? Was this an electric or diesel train? It's possible it's some kind of track-treatment thing, I guess. Equally it could just be a vent from the engines. I suppose if the engine is creating hot gasses of some description there might be some value on directing those towards the wheels/track. If it's present on every car, it could just be the vent from a gas braking system.

We must have some train experts around here that know this stuff. My uncle would know, but he's on holiday atm.

It was ONLY on the front cars (the engine car?) front set of wheels. It was relatively warm today, so the thing wasn't hissing or spewing any (visible) gas over the tracks/wheel.

My first thought it was maybe to bust up ice, and sprayed hot air, but it was angled towards the wheel, not forward. I wonder if that makes a significant difference, or, if heating the front wheels also helps prevent ice. I imagine however that given the length of the train (maybe 10-15), that ice could easily build up towards the rear.

I couldn't find any good results to back this up and I only have some vague related memories to base this on, but maybe they can release sand on the tracks through the nozzles, increasing the friction between rails and the wheels for emergency braking. Now I almost want to go to railway station to see if I could see similar nozzles.

I just had a conversation with a deaf woman. She could read my lips, and she could speak (although a bit awkward of course). I was thrilled. It was exiting somehow. She said she had had an act with an orchestra a while back. She would use sign language to tell the story of the Spring Sacrifice of Stravinsky, while the orchestra would play it. It was for children, and they really liked it, because they could feel the lower tones, like the ones from the double bass, the bass drum and the timpani.
It really made me happy somehow.

So I'm sitting here, thinking to myself, why is it that people are such toolbags? Why can't they mind their own business? Why do they want to cost me a day's leave? I should rant about it!

I wouldn't doubt that. The only problem is, employers in the US conspire to maintain a reasonable unemployment rate so that we all live in constant fear of someone doing our jobs for less money.

Went to railway station, saw trains and those nozzle-things. Didn't look like something for sand - too much insulation around a pipe that wasn't all that thick itself. Too shy to find someone who could tell what they're for.

How to mail something to a dorm room? The address I'm mailing to is like:
Address: College Address/Dorm Room Number?
City:
State:

All that's nice. Do I write her room number/hall (where it asks for address) on there or just the street address of the school?

name
The name of the dorm
The room number
The city the college is in
The zip code to the city where the college is at

I think that is how it is done. At least that is what I remember them telling me.

It probably depends how they sort the post? My college just does it by name in the bar building, so there's no point putting the specific room/flat on; so pretty much as long as the name and the name of the college is on there, it'll get to the right person....

Ubik, that is almost exactly what the nozzle looked like. I didn't see a sign for sand (obviously, or I wouldn't be asking), but that's enough of a look alike that I'm convinced.

So what's the deal, it just sprays a bit of dry sand on the tracks to improve traction? That seems like it'd pit the shit out of the tracks, wheels... Although I suppose you just end up with dust. And why isn't it found in the front wheel set of every car?
