Sometimes, when I see an advertisement for pizza that makes me crave pizza, I refuse to get any. Because I don't want The Company dictating my consumer behavior.

Mostly I just eat the pizza though.

MMM: Neil Gaiman's American Gods: well written, well-paced, beautiful descriptions, nice exploration of belief and gods, an interesting conception of the American mindset (the premise is that this land isn't good for gods, and yet we suffer from a surfeit of faith, in my view), great characters, and a protagonist I would do in a heartbeat. Solemn, grave, smart, still-waters-run-deep Shadow, be still my fictional heart.

Firing pins are normally gun metal color. They aren't painted, they aren't dyed, nothing but gun metal color, and gun oil colored if you've been careless in handling it while cleaning and fixing your weapon. Granted, the ROFLORANGEROFL makes it very easy to find, and hard to misplace. However, if you drop the damn thing it still can fall through cracks and whatnot easily.

Oh, okay.

New thought acquired while standing around outside aimlessly during a fire alarm: what the hell is the purpose of panty hose? Seriously, what could possibly be a plausible reason for stockings that do not insulate, accentuate, or flatter - whose only seeming purpose is to make your legs a suspicious matte sheen and give you awkward seams around your toes?

As far as I am aware, they give a small but significant amount of insulation, cover up blemishes and to a certain extent shape the legs. Some people also are, or appreciate the fact that there are, a proportion of people who are fetishists for them.

I can get support hose, but not the more common panty-hose-for-the-sake-of-panty-hose. I guess I personally do not find the trade-off between covering up natural blemishes vs. the resulting obviously fake mesh-y sheen to be worth it. Plus they itch, and I have not found their "insulation" to be worth a damn.

Fetish, different. Because I doubt most people wear panty hose to the office to fulfill a specific sexual kink.

@Podbaydoor:
Shadow is one of my favorite literary heroes. You should read Endymion and Rise of Endymion by Dan Simmons if you want similar strong swoontastic protagonists.

When I started my undergrad at the third school I attended, there was this guy who was finishing up his degree late. He attended school part time, and worked as a park ranger part time, so typically peeled up to campus in his truck, threw a tarp over his chainsaw, hatchet, and some other equipment, grabbed a leather rucksack and sauntered to class, harmonica in hand... I basically followed him around whenever he showed up like a lost puppy waiting, hoping, for nuggets of earthy wisdom. Raul is that dude, Shadow is that dude.

So noted. Thanks for the book recommendations.

Yeah, maybe Laura did not have the benefit of living in Shadow's head the way us readers did, but seriously, she had no idea what she was throwing away. He just took everything so calmly, not devoid of flaw or uncertainty or hurt, but no dramatics or hysterics or shrillness. Devoted and solid and passionate, and thoughtful. Also, if the reactions of the characters are anything to go by, built big (yum) and good-looking (*mindless drool*).

I don't even know how I'd deal with running into a Shadow-like person in real life. Basically bask in the presence of more cool than can be reasonably expected of a mortal on this planet. And did you learn any nuggets of earthy wisdom from your guy?

While I agree, I think Shadow's passivity (passiveness?) is also partially a flaw. I didn't like that he was incapable of crying or getting angry until much later in the book. Indeed, I thought part of the growth that he experiences as a result of the events in the book includes him taking ownership of his feelings. (I don't think those are really spoilers).
But yeah, if you liked Shadow, you'd like Raul Endymion. Same sort of old world gentleman, not really exceptional in any way aside from being particularly compassionate and passionate, and particularly plagued with wanderlust. Outdoorsy, never the smartest person in the room but always a quick learn, able to relate to people well but only insofar as being likeable and relatable. I vastly prefer these types to the Kerouac types, who are talentless vagabonds.

Yeah, I know that part of his character arc was that he did start taking ownership of his situations and started moving forward on his own instead of merely doing what he was told. What I still liked best, though, was his unflappability, or ability to not have inconvenient meltdowns in the middle of the action. And being basically honest. I would've liked American Gods much less if it had been told from Wednesday's POV, for example.

"The way he had of smiling without really smiling" - Admittedly, it's Mr. Town's observation while thinking about how much he hates Shadow, but Oh me yarm that is such a sexy trait to have.

Edit: Is it just me, or can slightly Terry Pratchett-esque plot points or turns of phrase be occasionally found in Gaiman's writing?

I think they're both pretty talented writers who excel at style more than substance (which isn't a bad thing). And considering they've done at least one joint project together, I wouldn't be surprised if they communicate a fair amount/borrow from one another.

Halibuts a pretty light fish; usually when cooking white fish of any sort I fry onions and garlic with rosemary and tarragon for a few minutes before tossing the fish in the mix.

Sometimes I dream about building a Radio-Station in the woods and only playing awesome music, without any stupid jingles or commercials or dull pop. We would just make an honest music porgram with the pixies, nirvana and janes addiction (and others), and sometimes get a little bit philosophical.

10 points if you can guess who the random person on my facebook is talking about here:
She's a deconstruction of the Manufactured Hot Singer. Even her videos aren't sexy - they're horrifying. People hate her because she's alien to what they're familiar with. She's Bertolt Brecht in a world of Stanislavskis.

Spoiler:
It's Lady Gaga! Looking at the comments that led up to this... I need some less pretentious people on facebook.
