Deep thought for the day.

The litany against fear:

Spoiler:
I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain

Makes no sense. Fear is a physiological response to danger, not some kind of dark magical wave.

Random fleeting screeching like the morgue: there is this woman I'm quite physically attracted to, but have no desire to know her or interact with her in any meaningful way. Funny thing is, it's obviously reciprocal. Ogling, ogling everywhere.

You forgot the plus bit, which makes it "Fear is the orgasm that brings total obliteration."

Which means with a few slight modifications it becomes not the Litany against Fear, but the Litany of Sustained Self-Pleasure.

Math education is like Battlestar Galactica. There's some action in the beginning and then it gets kind of boring, but if you stick around until the end all of the boring parts mix with the new stuff and then it's like WAIT, HE WAS THAT GUY? AND THE THING WAS LIKE THIS THE WHOLE TIME? THIS IS SO AMAZING.

(Or something.)

Math education is a lot like Star Trek.

Basic arithmetic is a lot like Captain Kirk. Not a lot of reflection over why we do what we do, we mostly do what seems to be the right thing.

Geometry is a lot like Wesley Crusher. It's only around for historical reasons, and everything in geometry can just as easily be deduced from linear algebra. But apparently there must be kids aboard the Enterprise, because someone has decided it's so.

Algebra is a lot like Spock. Quite systematic stuff.

Calculus is a lot like Data. An even more logical version of Spock (that wishes it could describe chaotic behavior). If you have trouble with Calculus, you're Dr. Pulaski.

Complex Analysis is a lot like 7 of 9. Intriguing and exotic and awkward to deal with.

Graph theory is a lot like Deep Space 9. Star Trek, without numbers (a spaceship)?!

Linear Algebra is a lot like Enterprise. It's an attempt to re-do TOS, but most people only stuck around for the first three dimensions.

Economics is a lot like the Star Trek reboot. What the hell is stuff?

I'm torn between the two. On the one hand, Picard. On the other hand, Wesley and Dr Pachinko or whatever her name was. And Riker pre-beard. And 7of9 on Voyager. Of course, the best of the lot was DS9, which was just Babylon 5 set in the ST universe anyway. /stir pot

While we're near the subject, what's the point in specifying that the Earl Grey tea should be hot? Do people actually drink it cold?

But then, you're talking to a computer that has been known to, when asked to create a glass of water, insist on being provided with an exact temperature in Celsius. I'm surprised it allows something as vague as "Hot".

Code: Select all

enum ಠ_ಠ {°□°╰=1, °Д°╰, ಠ益ಠ╰};
void ┻━┻︵╰(ಠ_ಠ ⚠) {exit((int)⚠);}

I always took it to mean "slightly hotter than the default setting". Like saying "hot" makes it default + 5°C or something.

Maybe he has defined a variable "hot" in the replicator?

Or or or. Maybe the replicator adds some cayenne pepper to the tea. Makes it hot that way.

Maybe he used to have a faulty replicator that didn't make anything hot unless you told it specifically, so now he doesn't take the chance.

So what happens if you ask for "Tea, Earl Grey, at absolute zero."? It'd probably still be better than the nutri-matic's substance that is almost, but not entirely, unlike tea.

There's a comic somewhere with a joke about comfort level and ability to wake up or something, but I'm having trouble finding it since my recollection of it is pretty hazy. I know there were two characters. I believe they were animals?

Screech: I wanted to look up if that Natalie Portman Peta "I'd rather shower in piss than wear fur" poster was real. At least two hours have passed since then, and now I realize my search bar still says "Natalie Portman piss". That would've been awkward if someone saw that.
