All the muscles in my back are so sore. I have this feeling that if I lie prone on the ground and someone were to just stand on my back, I'd feel better. Will pay $2 CAD (its all I have in my wallet right now) for this service.

I am really looking forward to the gym tonight. Got new exercises to do and I'm not aching after my bouldering on Monday (first time in 2 months!) Just need to get out of work, commute 2 hours to home, buy gift cards for friends that are getting married, get home, get changed and then get on my bike.

Woo!

I'm embarrassed by how much I missed my DVR while I was away. I'm also embarrassed by how I was on the phone with Barnes and Noble as I ran through an airport to catch a connecting flight, because I needed to read the Storm of Swords that badly.

Speaking of unkillable scouts, I had some kind of error downloading an update or something and scouts all became invisible, except for their heads.

Why do I always hear about food rationing and food shortages during wartime? I mean, what is it about the war that causes a shortage of foodstuffs? I have a couple ideas:

1) The status of war between nations, and multiple nations allegiances to one another, causes foodstuffs which were once imported to no longer be available because of embargo. If those foods are not produced locally, demand greatly increases.

2) A nation has a large number of troops on the battlefield in a faraway place, causing a logistics issue for food for the troops. As food must be transported out of a populated area (or diverted from being transported to a populated area), the price of food increases because of the cost of transportation. Also, availability for the noncombatants decreases, since the food that would be available to them is now going to the troops.

3) The war itself decreases food production. Farmland is destroyed, and farmers killed by results of military action.

Anybody know about this?

The other stuff sounds plausible, but this doesn't seem right to me. Whether there is a war going on or not the troops need to be fed. Assuming a stable population, more troops means fewer civilians, as troops are made from civilians. The same number of people need to be fed. The only time an increase in troops would lead to an increase in mouths to feed is if there was a large number of non-citizens fighting, either as mercenaries or to gain citizenship, but I imagine there would have to be a lot of them to upset the food supply.

I think it's mostly a combination of many farmers being sent off to fight, and the enemy attacking shipping, making food imports dangerous and reliant on the protection of the navy in convoys.

Oh yes, I meant for a given population area. For example, if a battlefield develops near a town, the town's food might be diverted to the combatants nearby. A month ago, those combatants were somewhere else, but now, shipments to the town are being diverted to the nearby combat area. The troops were being fed a month ago, but the food being shipped to them was being diverted from another town. From the viewpoint of a noncombatant in the town, the food supply has decreased, even though the total number of people being fed hasn't changed significantly.

Ah, yea that makes sense if most of your food is local. Which, I guess in most countries where there is active fighting, the food is probably local. In a country like the US where someone in New York eats plums from California I think something like that would have a much smaller impact.

That whole factor is only becoming a real problem in conjunction with the others. If you - for various reasons - can't import more food anymore and your own production falls behind, you obviously run low on food overall. Most governments then decide to 'feed the troops first'. Even without a constant shortage the distribution priority is an issue, because if you import supplies by sea you may overall do fine but a sunk ship might make for short-lived, local shortages or delays of food.

Well.... moving that food isn't free, nor is growing it. There's fuel costs, rubber costs, metal costs and so on - yeah, a lot of the metal costs have already been paid because the trucks already exist, but in a war that lasts a couple of years you'll need new tires for the trucks, and fuel every single day. If you're diverting more of those supplies than you normally do to the war effort, it'll start to affect the civilian market as well.

And in growing it you need the farm machinery and so on to continue the output level. So there's all the costs of the machinery and the chemicals needed for the fields (and the costs with manufacturing and moving those around) so... it's a bit more than just crop fields turning into battlefields and farmers being conscripted. Even a war fought nowhere near that nation using soldiers who weren't previously in the farming business can still affect that country's farming industry.

I don't have a recipe for those cookies, but I do have this recipe which I think makes some really fantastic cookies. Probably not terribly difficult to add a bit of chocolate in the mix.

Spoiler:

Code: Select all

1 1/2 cups of flour                3/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar                        1 egg well beaten
1/2 tsp soda                       1 cup ripe bananas (~3 bananas)
1/4 tsp nutmeg                     1 3/4 cup quick oats
3/4 tsp cinnamon                   1/2 cup nuts if desired

Sift dry ingredients, cut in shortening, add egg, bananas, oats and nuts.

Drop by teaspoonfuls. Bake at 400 degrees until light brown.

It's been a while since I've made them, but I think around 8 minutes does the trick.
