Re: Fleeting/Random Thoughts

Postby Geekthras » Fri Oct 26, 2007 4:42 am UTC

Today, I was temporarily God among my friends.
I was doing square roots in my head to spare time, and people were giving me "What's the square root of XYZ" which would be a 3-digit number and I'd spend like a minute and give them a couple digits. Then they tried cube roots on me. I was a lot slower, but not too bad. Then some wise guy asks me "What's the cube root of e?" and within 5 seconds I say "About 1.4"

How did I do it?
Easy!

From doing a little fiddling with radioactivity, half-life, and the such, I had remembered that ln(2)= .6935 or so. So, e^.7=about 2, e^.666666=a little less than 2, and e^.33333... = a bit less than sqrt(2) which as everyone knows is 1.4142...

It was awesome.
Wait. With a SPOON?!

Fleeting Thought: I am so sure the Emo Crybaby thread was a bad idea, but hopefully having the Fleeting Thoughts and the Crybaby and Confessional threads will help keep people from creating new threads for stupid things.

Nah. Next will be the "Generic Sadness" thread where you can be sad, then the "What frustrates you the most?" thread, then the "Reasons life sucks" thread, and...

Transliterated, it is approximately: how much is what?
Though I last took a Japanese class in high school, so I could fail a lot.

Yeah, that's about it. Doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense, and I'm about 98% sure that you would never hear a native speaker say it. But it sort of rolls off the tongue...

Precicely. I think a more literal translation would run along the lines of: speaking of how much is it, what is it?

Rather disappointed. Wanted to test my laptop's gaming ability, so I downloaded Oblivion. I finally got around to installing it and everything, loaded it up, and suck. It put me at medium quality and even then still lagged and stuttered. I downloaded a few performance enhancers, but they didn't change much. I lowered every visual aspect I could, and played. I could walk/run around somewhat smoothly, but combat was still untested. After a few console commands to soup up my new character, I went to fight. I died. I struck the opponent once, then it got really laggy.

I should have gotten a desktop instead of a laptop. :(

To quote the IT Crowd:
"Is it definitely plugged in?"
I say this, because, while a laptop doesn't NEED to be plugged in, sometimes the battery management goes a little too far and sucks all your power to preserve battery life at the expense of power. Plugging in basically turns this off so you can game better. My friend had a laptop that could play Star Wars Battlefront but it would lag a lot if it wasn't plugged in.

Of course, maybe your computer just isn't powerful enough. Like mine.

2. Walk towards rat.
3. Click to swing sword.
4. Sword hits rat.

5. Blood textures finish loading.

Velociraptors

Postby miguk » Sat Oct 27, 2007 1:31 pm UTC

This story is true, and everyone I've told this to laughs their asses off.
I thought to share it with you guys since the comic often features Raptors.

Me and my friends were at a bar playing pool. We had been playing for several hours when these two incredibly fat, sluttishly dressed women threw down quarters to play us. These women were about 1.5 times all my dimensions (including mass and time, excluding height, Im 24, 5'8 180 lbs) They were looking for some action. They insisted on buying us drinks and were hitting on us like crazy. (Note when a woman you're not interested in asks if you have a girlfriend the answer is YES) While we had been playing and talking they asked what we did, (we're grad students studying engineering) She replied saying she was a very "Sciencey" person. So to prove to me that she was a "Sciencey" person while my friend was lining up his shot she comes over to me and says.

Her: "I know what he's doing."
Me: "What's that?" Thinking she's going to say something incredilby obvious like lining up the shot
Her: "He's figuring out the veloicraptors need to get the ball in the hole."
I turn to her
Me: "DID YOU JUST SAY "THE VELOICRAPTORS NEEDED TO GET THE BALL IN THE HOLE""
Her: (Confused) "Yeah"

I look to my friend, he is gaping in disbelief. We look at each other and crack up laughing. He was already leaning on the pool table. I am a few feet away and I am laughing so hard that I bend over. She then grabs my ass and says " Oh, you know what I meant" This alarms me greatly but also makes me laugh harder.

My friend regains control and finishes the game. The women were asking us for phone numbers and where we were going after this bar.
We told them we had early mornings and got the fuck outta there.

Everyone we've told this to cannot believe that she said velociraptors. That woman was definitely NOT drunk, and that level of stupidity is an extremely unattractive.

Just thought I'd share

Clearly velociraptor cannot be the code word for fat, ugly women as they are feral, ferocious dinosaurs. And sexy.

well these women were definitely ferocious, possibly feral, and as far as we were concerned they were old enough to be dinosaurs.
As for velociraptors being sexy, then you clearly have a different definition of "excessive love biting" then I do.

Rather disappointed...

Decent gaming laptops are very expensive, upward of 50% more than desktop for same power.
For example, for £500 you can build a full pc (inc monitor, keyboard, mouse) that could play oblivion at max (At 1024x768 anyway). Where as a laptop would cost at least £750 to be able to do that (If you get a very good deal, it will very most likely cost more. Also £750 on a desktop would be a very nice desktop, especially if you can get a 8800 series in it).

Also, if your ever buying premade systems, almost all of them are designed for every day users. Hence they will probably come with Nvidia's 7600 / 8600 series or Ati's 2600 / x1650 series or below.

Note: My wisdom teeth are, to the best of my knowledge, OK.

After reading the wikipedia article, I believe my fear of wisdom teeth to be perfectly rational. I don't know how I could possibly deal with removal - the lead up (insanely frightened and stressed), the actual removal (possibly the easiest bit but constantly trying to hold back pain and pray for the anaesthetic to work), and then the fucked up following few weeks where there's all the stuff you have to deal with to make sure you don't die of an infection 'n' shit.

I'm so very frightened.

I've had all my wisdom teeth removed, its not that bad but I had mine removed one at a time. So 1st week pull the tooth, 2nd week check the stitches, third week same as the first and repeat until count.wisdomteeth == 0. I didn't get knocked out, I only had the local anesthetic so I was completely aware of everything. The surgery was over pretty quickly. I think there are less risks with that and I the pain afterwards was pretty bearable.

I've heard that getting them all out at once is pretty hard. The surgeon who did it for me said it was the first time anyone had ever done it that way, but he thought it would be the easiest on the patient.

So I don't need my wisdom teeth taken out!

How To Eat Pomegranates the Awesome Way

You will need:
-one pomegranate
-a fairly sharp knife
-one of those thingies you stick in the ends of corn-on-the-cob, preferably something simple and with two pointy bits (can be replaced with a thick sewing needle if you don't have any - beware of tongue-stabbing)
-a pot with lid that can hold half of your pomegranate
-a straw

Method:
Take your pomegranate and slice it in half with your knife. Do this on a smooth surface and suck up any leaking juices with the straw. Take one half (either one, doesn't matter), shove it in the pot and stick the lid on. Put the pot into the fridge for later use. Now, hold the half you're going to eat in your non-dominant hand. Hold the corn-on-the-cob skewer... thingie in your dominant hand. Now use the skewer to spear and pull out the little jewel-like blobs that contain the seeds. Eat. Repeat until there are no jewel-seed thingies left. Drink the remaining juice. Repeat with other half when you feel like it (don't wait too long or it goes all mankey).

Top Tips:
-If you have a sweetcorn skewer thingie, try to get the two prongs on each side of the seed for an easy pluck.
-Try to insert the prong perpendicular to the longest axis of the seed for a more efficient pluck with less hole-making, ripping and general cufuffle.
-After a few of the seeds have gone, you'll notice a fleshy, membraney sort of screen blocking the delicious jewel capsules from your handy skewer. Use the skewer to tear this layer and peel back, revealing even more lovely, ruby-coloured, juicy, fleshy and delicious jewel capsules (extra man points for defeating nature if you do this in less than five minutes).
-Be careful when levering to remove a jewel; if you do it with too much force the juice could squirt into your eye or, even worse, onto the floor. If you're really unlucky (or clumsy) even the seed might get on the floor.

i tell you what, it messed me up when i first looked at the map in our japanese textbook? Because it had africa and europe on the right. and africa looks JUST ENOUGH like south america that I saw a comma-shaped blob and was "okay, normal" and then i saw the rest and was like "WHOAAA. Trippy."

Although, honestly, the Pacific Ocean is bigger and easier to split.

Actual answer time!

Our maps are all descended from European maps. In early Mercator projections, putting Europe on the right made sure it was dead center of the map. Yay Eurocentrism!
