My hobby: Expressing inverse square laws in terms of the area of an implicit geometric shape between the two points. Circles are especially annoying to use when the force is attractive and the two points are in an orbit.

Hungry spiders eat up to 800m tonnes of insects a year!

Scientists estimated that there are a total of 25 million tonnes of spiders on Earth.

800 Mt / 365.25 days = 2.19 Mt / day
4.225 * 1011 kg / ( 2.19 Mt / day ) = 192.9 days.
They could eat us all by the end of February.
Oh, Willie McBride, it was all done in vain.

I love the Maildir principle. No need to fire up a proper email client to filter and remove 900 new messages (because currently cron sends me a message every minute the xkcd minecraft server is down  ) because the emails (proper) are just text files in a folder. :D

(this has been known to people in the olden days, but I guess it's news to me now)

Has anybody else done any slinging?
That is, with a hand sling.

I've done it as a hobby for a while now, and I just finished braiding a great new sling. It's wonderfully light and really snappy on the release. I've recently switched from apache style to figure-8. It's pretty great -- my lateral accuracy has gotten a lot better and it's not nearly as hard on my shoulder. I can now pretty consistently hit my target tree from 20 yards with random rocks.

I heard that the total solar eclipse in the United States on August 21 will be within one day's travel for 70% of Americans. I heard that it's predicted to be the busiest travel weekend in US history. I'll probably travel from my bedroom to my lawn, then back again. In the small town I live in, it is expected to be very crowded, and there seem to be concerns that the tourists will push the limits on the town's water supply. If you're planning on traveling, please be careful and respectful of the locals in whatever area you choose to go.

Could anyone recommend me an app for android that does to-do lists? Specifically I want to set up tasks that may include subtasks, and where I don't have to set a deadline for them. (Specifically I need to organise my correspondence a bit better, so I can write "respond to S's letter" as item with subtasks "write the letter" and "put the envelope in a postal box", and that sort of thing.) Also I would prefer if the app was not evil and also not ugly.

I now use Trello, which I love, but I wouldn't recommend if your primary interface is android (it has an android app, but the webapp is much more complete and usable). Before that I used to use todoist, which I liked, is pretty, and ticks all the features you're looking for, so maybe give that a go.

Google Keep is pretty good. You can create a note for each task and bullets under it. Not sure what your definition of evil is, though.

I will check that out, thank you Quercus!

EDIT: Alright I downloaded todoist but it sets deadlines in the form of dates for the tasks automatically, which I can't stand. You say there's a way to turn this off?

Zohar and Weeks: I feel like at some point Google switched slogan to "Don't be that guy" and just never told anyone.

Before google and facebook, life was meaningless. Now life means monetization. That can't be evil, right?

Also I hadn't caught the news that google now has a tour inside the ISS. Who ordered a large shipment of cylindrical vessels and tubes? They seem to be blocking half the storage. Can someone tell me what they are for?

Labeled it as the functional cargo room (Zarya Module). Functions primarily as storage and propulsion now. May have stuffed some cylinders in bags with "ZERO G ONLY". Notes "Brine Only" written on one cylinder.

Watched this too. Skip to 47:00 for this module. Stored food in the boxes. Mentioned equipment in some side panels. Saw a vaguely similar (unstacked) metal cylinder at ~21:55. Used that for urine. Came from the Russians, supposedly. Shares the Zarya storage space with Russians, incidentally.

Thanks. The metal tube/bucket parts also look very similar to the base of the toilet, so likely those are used for storing poop (and hopefully have a matching lid somewhere).

I like how they manage to launch proper sriracha into fucking orbit, but somehow it's impossible to find in my home town. Only shitty off-brand sriracha that isn't half as good as rooster sauce :-(

Sriracha was a very trendy flavor a couple of years ago. I remember seeing sriracha flavored everything. I joked with a friend about Starbucks having sriracha flavored coffee, and a week later she texted me saying that they actually had packets of sriracha sauce on the counter for customers to add to their coffee if they want. I think that sriracha trend is pretty much over (before that it was pumpkin spice, and before that it was pomegranate). I can still find rooster sauce easily in the local supermarket. But I'm frustrated that I can't find any tzatziki!

Who sets these trends? Is it food companies responding to popular demand, or are the food companies forcing the trend?

My uneducated guess is that it's a combination of memetics, marketing, and markets. That is to say, the nexus could be that the price of producing certain goods sinks, or someone in a PR department (re-)launches a campaign, or the idea that this is tasty grows in some fortuitous way (a comic artist relates his obsession with egg-flavoured water; a politician is photographed digging into a pumpkin filled with pesto rosso; it becomes ironically hip to brush lightly your subway sandwiches with tar before eating). The other two areas then latch on: as demand for pumpkin pesto increases, the profit of buying/producing/selling it goes up; PR teams cash in by developing more tar-and-sourdough products; late night comedians add the egg-water craze to their routines).

But I've spent literally zero time actually researching this and I'm probably just talking out my arse. I should write or possibly read a book about how to talk out one's arse with confidence.

Attended a funeral for the first time. Expected a glum atmosphere. Resembled a family reunion. Had not seen each other for five years, at least. Clustered in fairly stable groups. Overheard name information gathering on several occasions.

Preferred this over a normal family reunion (with the other side). Seeks you out there. Evaded most conversation at the funeral. Avoided eye contact and inspected the room. Sufficed.

Describes the reverend's speech as scared (in words, but not tone). Suspects it to have been reassuring to believers, however. Felt somewhat creeped out by the litanies. Hummed sometimes, rather than remain silent.
