Aha, a really, really evil idea: Change my username to 'The Game'...

I think I prefer Cheese, though, and doubt that if I somehow got one with power to change my name that I could persuade someone else to change it back if/when I got bored or confused too many people.

On rereading, I realise that I've had some verbal diarrohea. Sorry.

It's been done elsewhere, and people stop noticing (or stop realizing they're losing, which amounts to the same thing) after a while.

1. The phrase "Person x found Jesus" conjures up mental images of a "Where's Wally/Waldo?" style book - have you found Jesus yet?

2. I currently have two glasses on my bedside table, as well as an alarm clock with a cable which runs past them. Last night, as I was in bed, it occurred to me to arrange the glasses with the taller, narrower one outermost so that if it was toppled by the cable it would be less likely to knock the other glass onto the floor. It's common sense when you think about it, but these sorts of thoughts just don't seem to go through most people's minds usually.

FleetingPersistent thought about the internet: If you think of something funny, it's been done before.
Simply a reworking of rule 34, swapping out the porn.

EDIT: And as that would be considered funny by someone out there, someone'll have made this point before. Which rule number is it, may I ask?

Ohwell, I feel obliged to draw attention to my [post count] posts. I try not to look at it anymore, because that makes me want to set targets for myself, which I reach by being a spammy bastard, which makes pretty much everyone see me as a spammy bastard, which is not good for the reputation, which gets me sad. I want to keep happy, so just know that I'm somewhere vaguely above 1k.

Oh, and a thought on k: It's REALLY ANNOYING when people write the year as '2k7' in grafitti. the k/M system is for RESISTORS, not DATES, and '2k7' means 2-fucking-700, not 2007.

Thanks for taking the time to read my rant, for those that did.

"I have a Masters."

Postby The Great Hippo » Fri Dec 14, 2007 5:43 am UTC

Before I begin, let me start by telling you that I work in retail.

You know that grim-faced spectre behind the counter who treats every act taken by the customers as a personal invasion of his space? The soul-less automaton who responds to all questions concerning the store's product with a mono-syllabic grunt capable of simultaneously conveying both the answer to your query and the unfathomable depths of loathing he feels towards you for daring to exist? Make sure to wave next time you see him--that's me.

Two customers pop in. Okay, fine--our store attracts customers. I do what I can to discourage this sort of nonsense, but I guess it's inevitable1.

One of them asks me a question about a camera. I start to answer, but then the other one loudly interrupts. Okay, fine--rude customers. This is not something new.

I lead them to the object of their desire, handing them the one I assume they seek. The conversation goes as follows:

"Is this the one that's 50 dollars?"

"No, sir. That one is 100 dollars."

"Oh, I want the one that's 50. It's on sale."

"Are you sure? I'm pretty positive it's the 100 dollar one that's on sale. May I see the circular?"

"I have a Masters."

Oh, damn. Oh, damn! A Masters? You have a Masters?! Oh SHIT! Where is my autograph book when I need it? Hey, I'm working on my bachelor's degree; could you give me a few pointers on where to get my pretentious douchebag certificate? Because I'm not sure if they give those out with the diplomas at my college. I'll have to check.

What manner of Flying-Tiger Sleeping-Dragon fuckery2 is this? You have a Masters? Is this how you respond to every question someone asks you? "Do you know what time it is?" -- "Of COURSE! I have a MASTERS!" -- "What's your name?" -- "MASTERS!3" What sort of Masters degree lends itself towards authority over retail prices, anyway? Do you have a major in Discount Prices with a minor in Holiday Savings? Was your final paper written on the back of a coupon book?

Listen up, Imaginary Dickwad (you remain imaginary because I was too much of a wimp to say this to your face and there's no way in hell you're going to be reading this), because I'm only going to explain this once: Slips of paper do not determine your level of fucking intelligence4.

No hate on any of you graduates who got your diplomas but skipped the pretentious douchebag ceremony (I hear they serve some delicious cake, though), but at some point you have to realize that the scrap of paper you have framed and hanging on your wall represents nothing more than a decision made by people with more scraps of paper on their walls to let you join their club5.

Of course there are far more obscene social trends out there than getting a little arrogant over accomplishing something as sincerely tough as getting your Masters, but what can I say? The guy was a total dick6.

1 I do what I can but I'm only one man. I can't be miserable to everyone all the time.
2 Someone get on this movie, stat. I will not rest until I have seen a martial arts porno epic with acrobats cavorting among the trees on wires having frantic battle-sex to the sound of a Chinese orchestra.
3 Last name, Baits. His parents were such incredible dicks.
4 Fucking intelligence is something like emotional intelligence, but with more, you know--fucking.
5 Theoretically, the man with the most scraps of paper is President of this club. I imagine he lives in a house made out of framed college diplomas. I bet he's totally a Liberal Arts major.
6 NO SERIOUSLY HE WAS A GIANT TALKING PENIS IT WAS TERRIFYING.

But I can't bring myself to sleep.

I fear that I'm going to become overwhelmingly incoherent as the night progresses simply because my brain will start to shut itself down.
