FT: When people end answers to questions with question marks in order to indicate that the information contained in their answer should be obvious, it annoys me to no end. Just change it to a period, and everything is better. The person asking the question didn't have the information you just gave them, or they wouldn't have asked the question in the first place.

Terribly contrived example (pulled out of thin air so as to not single anyone here out because people here do it all the time):

xXquestionaskerXx wrote:Why is the chemical formula for water H2O?

xXanswerguyXx wrote:Because it's composed of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom?

See? Snarky. Just change the punctuation after the answer to a period and everything is better.

I interpret that as 'is this the answer you're looking for?' rather than snarkiness.

Or, 'I'm not sure but I think this is the answer'.

Not really, no. Is the person asking about the chemical composition asking a philosophical question? Are they trying to get a discussion on the nature of chemical compounds going and just asking the initial question badly?

I do it all the damned time, but I don't mean to be snarky.. just unsure that I'm actually answering the question being asked, as most of the time I'm thinking I'm just not understanding the question.

That's interesting. Every time I read something like that, it feels like the person answering has "why are you even asking this?" all wrapped up in that question mark. Now that I'm actually giving conscious (rather than subconscious) thought to this, I'm not sure why I feel that way.

If it helps, I usually have "why are you even asking this?" all wrapped up in that question mark. But I'm a sarky git.

That said, I guess sometimes it's not a disdainful thing - I'm just surprised that the person hasn't thought of the answer.

I'm physically bouncing at work. I need to get home.
My mind is racing (filled with lists, of things to do and things I've done another sleepless night's begun... <3 BNL) about LARP stuff. and I literally am bursting with the desire to talk about it with people in game and start my plotting. I hate that I can't communicate with people in a nearly synchronous manner while at work.

Ok, fora is what the xkcd posters here have decided is the proper plural of form of 'forum'. 'Is' is a singular verb.

So either: 'the forum is great' or 'the fora are great' is correct, but 'the fora is great' is not.

@b.i.o.: Welcome to British Grammar 101.

If a group is acting as a collective, as though of one mind, the singular form of the verb is used.
If a group is acting independently of itself, doing different things, the plural form is used.

For example:

The team takes its seats.

It's two different people writing graffiti.

The first tells others to Question Everything, and another immediately applies the lesson to that writing.
