Liking the new avatar Mr. 666.

Also, all this talk about Team Fortress 2 in the Team Fortress 2 thread has gotten me depressed. My computer is far too shitty to play any recent game on it. I can't even play Half Life 2 on the lowest settings on it. I'll bet I could get about $500 out of this one if I sold it. I'd build my own, but I don't trust myself enough to do it right.

tl;dr: i need a job.

One day of high school left...

I almost don't want it to come only because of all the crap I have to do afterwards (baccalaureate service [apparently, its an American thing, but I don't even know what the hell it is], graduation ceremony [with 500+ graduates no less], open house [talking with relatives, strangers, and relative strangers: screw that]).

I may just "disappear" for a week or so, if you know what I mean.

Which would be?

Because state ID issuing agencies have a brilliant track record of keeping our information secure. (NOTE FOR THE DENSE: THERE WAS SARCASM BACK THERE)

Seriously - lets go ahead and put our identifying information in one big, centralized pile. Problem is, that pile has to be used and accessed by myriad agencies for myriad things. If one of those agencies is compromised right now, you prettymuch lose up to one state worth of data. If one is compromised under a unified system, you prettymuch lose ALL OF IT.

Furthermore, this will all cost money. If we're going to invest money in something, there had better be some kind of benefit. Lets run down the list of "benefits" commonly associated with national ID card schemes:
1) Universal ID cards make administration easier for people who need information off those cards - If I may refer you to http://www.aamva.org/NR/rdonlyres/66260 ... 2FINAL.pdf - the 2005 Driver's License/ID Card Specifications document. It features, in very specific detail, the details of what belongs on the mag strip or barcode of an ID card, as well as what other related information must be collected and stored. Therefore, assuming this national ID card contains no additional information beyond this spec, a simple 2d barcode scanner and card swipe solves this concern. Or someone who can read. That also helps a lot.
2) Some mumbling or other about Mexicans - Show me an illegal alien with a valid US driver's license. They exist. Do you know how they got that card? By guessing an SSN. How do you propose that we convince the federal government that we are who we say we are? Oh. Our SSN. A national ID card scheme does nothing to prevent fakes (it actually makes fakes easier, because there's one and only one design to knock off, instead of 50+, so all the counterfeiters can work together to crack a more difficult design instead of concentrating on whatever their particular locale is), and does nothing to prevent obtaining one falsely (unless you want to issue it at birth... But then you have the problem of all the people in this country who have already been born)

So, no benefit, it costs money, and it's a security risk?

I think I'll pass.

Does anyone know what effect the refresh rate of a computer monitor has? I'm curious because I changed it recently (to an increased frequency) to avoid eye-strain, but now I'm being paranoid and can't find if it can screw up my vision at all...somehow. Also, I don't even know what effect it has on eye strain.

on a related note, what's the purpose of moire? a bit of horizontal moire comes by default on my monitor settings but I turn it off because I think it screws up my eyesight

After searching for moire on Wikipedia, I've found this image, which is full of awsome. (I mean it looks like the building has ripples!)

I've don't really see a moire on my monitor, though... but maybe it's just because of my crappy eyes.

Edit: Something else awesome on wikipedia that I'll have to bump up that awesomely random Wikipedia articles thread

I think the only real concern is to make in =/= 60 Hz. That way it doesn't sych with the lights flicker.

Heh, it's been 60Hz from since we've had it until a few months ago (which is about 5 years). I changed it to 70Hz

There was a lady where I used to live that had a little yorkie (I guess that's what they're called) she would walk. One day I saw her walking by and she was power walking, and was doing curls with the dog in her hand like it was a weight. It looked very confused. I felt sorry for it.

RT: I have come to a realisation. I have two primary groups of friends. One I do things outside of school with (Group 1), the other not so much (Group 2). With Group 1, I generally go to interesting places with. A common haunt is the local beach and it's arcades and amusements where we climb the rocks, play with a nerf, play in the arcades etc.; when the weather's nice we go to the playground at lunchtime and screw about there. The few times I've been out with Group 2, they've gone to the city centre, gone to a pub/club/restaurant and gotten drunk. That's about it. From the sound of it, that's what most of them do every weekend. How... fucking... BORING. These people are BORING! They don't know how to have fun! They look at me odd when I say I went to the playground and PLAYED there. They go to the beach to sunbathe and drink if they go at all. Alcohol has become such a damn crutch to them, they must think because they're teenagers they can't go and have fun properly, they have to drink and do stupid shit like that to enjoy themselves. This angers me immensely.

The realisation? Alcohol is a depressant. It depresses your ability to have real fun.

The most important fact however, is that it's far cheaper to take a £4 train to the nearest beach every weekend than it is to get a £3 ticket into the town centre and spend all of your week's earnings on booze.

And then they complain about how strapped for cash they are. Idiots.
