So.... what does this suggest about M. Pence calling his wife "Mother"?

Yes. But there's a difference between cultural language and personal choices in language. Calling a beloved "baby" is pretty creepy, if you disconnect it from cultural context. Imagine if you saw someone calling their partner "toddler" in public as a term of endearment.

My point is not to say baby is bad (when used as a term of endearment between loving people), but that something being common in one culture doesn't mean it's necessarily excusable in another.

Calling you wife "mother"/"mum"/etc. in the presence of your children isn't that unusual in my experience and my grandparents (specifically my dad's, one who's very Yorkshire and the other spent a lot of time there once evacuated during the war) even sometimes call each other "mum" and "dad" when I'm there but none of their kids are.

Yeah. Of all the terrible things about Michael Pence, this isn't one of them.

To be clear, I didn't try to say Pence is terrible because of this. All I was saying was that "some other culture is doing it" isn't a good basis for behavior.

ThirdParty wrote:There's a building in my city, which I pass by on my way to and from work, that feels a little ... anomalous. Google Maps says it's a radio station, but I wonder.

The building is about fifty feet tall, fifty feet deep, and three hundred feet long: from the edge it looks like a cube, but then you try to walk past it and it just keeps on going. I've never seen anybody come in or out. Its sign, contrary to Google's claim that it's a radio station, says "AT&T". The bottom floor looks like that of a normal office building: normal windows, through which can sometimes be seen desks and desk chairs and computers and whatnot; one of the windows has a "Bell Telephone Company" decal in it, which I guess is consistent with it being an AT&T office building. The next floor has smaller, frosted windows. The top floor, which is significantly taller than the other two, is windowless. (It might also be two windowless floors that are significantly shorter than the two that have windows. Hard to tell for sure.)

The roof is interesting. I can't see much from the sidewalk, but there are at least two rows of barbed wire going around the roof, like you'd expect for a ... well, not a prison, since they're straight rather than angled inward ... but some high-security thing. What first drew my attention, though, is that there always seem to be huge numbers of birds perched up there. Like, every seagull in town, whenever it's not out foraging for food, perches on this building. I don't know why; it's not the tallest building around or anything like that. (I guess there could be a rooftop swimming pool, or at least a giant puddle, behind the barbed wire, that's attracting them.) Anyway, at any given time there must be hundreds of birds, maybe over a thousand.

I feel strange while walking past the building. A little worried about getting splattered by bird droppings on the way to work, but it's more than that. I don't know how to describe it. It's a feeling like anything is possible, like ... well, like, I'd be surprised to see an elephant strolling down the street, but I'd be less surprised if it happened while I was walking past this building. I could imagine that the fabric of reality is thin there, somehow. (It's funny what tricks our brains can play on us, isn't it?)

So, hands up if you got up an hour early this morning because the alarm wasn’t set properly.

Keep your hand up if you then automatically went through your morning getting up procedure without really looking properly at your watch or registering the time checks on the radio.

Then keep your hand up if you woke your whole family up because they were clearly late getting up for work/school/college, before one of them pointed out your error.

Just me then?

I was reflecting yesterday that we are in a weird in-between stage for daylight savings. A couple decades ago nothing in a typical home automatically adjusted for daylight savings, so everyone knew they had to change everything, which was fine. A couple of decades from now everything in a typical home will automatically adjust for daylight savings, which will also be fine. Right now some things adjust and some things don't, so you're never quite sure whether you've got everything set right.

Our microwave and oven were the only things that didn't adjust. We couldn't actually work out how to change its clock; we ended up turning it off and on again which let us enter the time again as if there'd been a powercut.

Spot on (at least for the UK - not sure what the rest of Europe does, suspect it's not going to be consistent). And if you think that's silly check out all the other time zone silliness! (and then check out the rest of Tom Scott's stuff, because it's great).

Our microwave and oven were the only things that didn't adjust. We couldn't actually work out how to change its clock; we ended up turning it off and on again which let us enter the time again as if there'd been a powercut.

Electric ovens all do this, because apparently they haven't heard of DST and hard to access outlets.
Our microwave annoys me more though, because it has a whole load of buttons but (instead of a numeric keyboard for conveniently entering the exact time required by your preferred brand of pop corn) two buttons* increment the total by 10 seconds and one minute respectively. Same buttons are used for setting the clock in the most annoying manner possible: one advances the hours and the other advances the minutes.

*If you're wondering what all the other buttons do, so do I.

I think next spring Europe should just not bother adjusting their clocks and next autumn we should just not bother adjusting ours. Then our clocks will all show the same time (apologies to Portugal, who'll have to make adjustments specially) and we won't have to faff around with this crap any more. We could call it Lipnik time, Lusatian Niesse time, Český Dub time, Kámen Common time, Schlag time, Grillenstein time, Siebensee time (Seben Uhr Siebzehn, Siebenseezeit?), Brbinj time, Termoli (not Tamale) time, Rotello time, Agropoli time or Etna time.

I kind of fancy visiting all of them now.

It would also be Kopparberg time.

Using a device to record sound onto a magnetic tape, if I record a sound that is of a frequency too high for my ear to register, but then slow the tape as I play it back, will it make the sound audible?

I assume tapes have a range of frequencies they can record? The range is likely to extend past the human hearing range though, so I'd bet it's possible.

Not necessarily, although it depends on what exactly you mean by "tape" and what equipent you use to record. Compact cassette isn't particularly good at recording higher frequencies, IIRC initially it was marketed for voice recording only. For example the Nakamichi 1000 has a frequency response of 35Hz to 20kHz, while my not exactly top of the range Sony reel-to-reel claims 20Hz to 25kHz.
The bottom line is that you should probably check the specs of your tape machine to make sure you're not just listening to tape noise.
