That does not look like a Swinub. For the record, Bulbapedia interprets its name as "swine" + "nub".

A piglike creature with a thick pelt? Keep in mind that these are short stories that often don't get a cover to themselves. I've certainly never seen the one in the wiki article before today.

PKD was an odd bird.

A Scanner Darkly is my favorite, I think. Ubik was hyped up to me a lot before I read it, but it was so similar to others that I'd already read that it wasn't that special for me. Still good though.

I've been trying to fetch a thing called a "reel cassette" for a while now. It is an absolutely pointless gimmick, the hubs inside have sidewalls giving them the appearance of reels found on reel-to-reel machines. It's the kind of thing you buy solely for the looks of it, because your deck has a big clear window on the tape door. One would think such a thing wouldn't be prohibitively expensive, but it is. Currently there are two for sale on "Hungarian ebay" at the equivalent of $17 each while the ones on actual ebay(.de) start at €10 (and approach infinity). Madness, madness I tell you, even a factory sealed1 type IV cassette costs a third of that (and those are reportedly capable of producing higher quality recordings).
After a while, I came across a British webshop selling all sorts of cassette-related merch where the reel tapes cost about two or three bucks depending on design (that isn't cheap, but at least reasonable). "Cool, let me just throw a few other things into my basket because shipping's going to be expensive anyway" I thought, but I still didn't expect it to be £12. Yyyup, this just went back to being ridiculously expensive. I think I'll just buy a reel-to-reel machine after all...

I now propose a new measure of frustration based on semiconductor devices. About a year ago I assembled an LED VU-meter circuit on a solderless breadboard. Basically it's the "typical applications" circuit from the chip's (LM3915) spec sheet, and it worked fine. Well, having now reassembld it twice I can safely say it doesn't seem to do that anymore. Only Bob knows if I messed the circuit up somewhere or the fault is in the black box of mystery...

It was nice seeing the main (possibly only) poster inside a bank window being a gay couple hugging with 'He said yes! Now for the next big step' (which I assume is getting a mortgage together). I'm glad that non-heteronormative things are becoming more common .

Also, I was super happy when I saw a whole DC heroes thing aimed at girls in Tesco a while ago. I really, really, really hope that wonderwoman is good.

In the equation

Code: Select all

a = b/e

b is 1 kg m−1 and e is 1 kg m−2

What is a?

The ratio of the heaviness of a rope to the heaviness of a sheet of material? What? I can do the mathematical part of this easily enough but WTF are they CALCULATING? The mass of bridge per metre of supporting walls divided by the mass of bridge per square metre of deck? Isn't that the distance between supporting walls in metres? Why would anyone be doing this calculation? Seriously, what the heck were they doing that led to this?
