User Submission Day (Comics)

Postby azule » Wed Apr 16, 2014 6:35 am UTC

The purpose of this thread is to create original comics for display on Thursdays. Thursday is the day during the week where no xkcd comic is released nor is even a consolatory What-If?D released. I submit that we submit a new comic on this day.

I propose the comic be of an original origin (drawn by the person posting) but done in a style reminiscent of xkcd itself. This means it may cover any of the themes xkcd doesT and in a stick-figure styleS.

This proposal isn't set in stone. If you have something along these lines or close to it, it is probably fine. :)

Note: My example that starts the thread isn't the only thing I'm looking to get. Single panel, multiple-panel, or serialized comics are all fine. Got something else? Probably that too. :)

I'm getting started early so as to allow others a chance to submit something tomorrow and also to create steam.

In the next post you will find a comic to get us started.

D Tuesdays
T such as romance, language, geekiness
S though other styles may be fine too

Edit to add clarification.

This is not my first USDSubmission. I'll post those later, but for now enjoy this new comic. It is the first part if a, I think, three or four parter.

I've thought of creating sort of a "crowdsourced webcomic", where you can submit strips (perhaps with some fancy comic-strip-maker HTML5 tool) and people can vote on the ones they like most. Has anybody ever done something like that?

...reddit.com/r/comics ?

At any rate, while I find the idea intriguing, I'm not sure the first example given qualifies as being In The Style Of. Sure, it's stick figures.... there's 8,0001 stick figure comics. To be in the same style, it has to do far more than just use the same art style.

1I totally made that number up.

For the notion of someone hearing "Execute him!" through a door to fit XKCD's style, it would likely need to either be a overly enthusiastic coder yelling it, or the protagonist to misinterpret the command as one relating to coding as opposed to the deliberate ending of someone else's life by order.

While it's possible this is where it's headed, it makes for a... in my opinion, at least.. terrible introduction to what should be done.

That's used for submitting already existing webcomics.

Closer would be r/F7U12 and r/polandball.

Apologies for the delay. This is the second part of the series. Hopefully this will start to make more sense (but really it's a multi-panel comic and won't have a pay-off until the end).

That's the idea. I want to enjoy reading others' comics (not just creating my own). I look forward to anyone's participation, no matter how small or large.

I know. I have other comics that are not the same art style nor the same in theme. But, I don't think we can be Randall, but close. Just, similar. Like, not about cooking. (There's never been a cooking xkcd, right?) Another way to look at it, is we start here (not very close) and as we continue on we get better at it, and with feedback, fine tune our comics to fit the theme better. We're only human. ;)

Also, please do your own to show us how it should be done. :) (That'll show me! (win!))

I still maintain that the content is more important than the artstyle.

That I can draw for shit has nothing to do with this.

Yay, one that's not from me! hah :) I especially like that alt text that went with it. And I love the use of the dual monitors. (Maybe my second panel should have had multiple screens, too.)

SecondTalon wrote:I still maintain that the content is more important than the artstyle.
Oh, I see why you're adamant about that. ;)
SecondTalon wrote:That I can draw for shit has nothing to do with this.
Thanks for the submission. I don't see any reason that this art style shouldn't be included in this thread...but, I didn't get it. I think it's something about war, maybe a game. Sorry.

Oh, and no one has to explain their jokes if they dun wanna. It's artist's prerogative.

"I don't get it", hmm... that sounds familiar. I guess yours is the most xkcd-like. Congrats! ;)

Just wanna note, down here, that the idea of the thread, to me, is to think "I'm happy to get this comic from one of our users even though there isn't a new xkcd comic" and not just that they're comics, hence the suggestion that they be similar to xkcd in style. I'm also good with whatever if people are happy with it, too. Something like that...maybe.

Edit: more comments.

It's some kind of juxtaposition of twin towers and twins. I'm not smrt enough to fully comprehend either.

Correlation says that because my comic confused, eviloatmeal's comic hit a homerun. I loved it, too! I didn't think anyone else would post a USD today, so YAY!

EG (if I may so address you, Envelope Generator), it's an apropos 9/11 (September 11th) comic, featuring twin toddlers and baby food. Baby food is goopy and messy.

Honestly, I think I'm missing a frame. I had the idea, but I forgot some of it before I finished. "Zoom" should have been more like a flying sound (the traditional spoon as an airplane), and hopefully you get the rest so that I don't have to explain the joke.

eviloatmeal wrote:It's some kind of juxtaposition of twin towers and twins. I'm not smrt enough to fully comprehend either.
I promise that if y'all don't figure this out before the end of today, then I'll explain it all. :) That's a very important finding, btw.

Note: While I love eviloatmeal's comic, and won't attempt to discourage anything along these lines, their comic was pretty easy to get (besides knowing some of the terms), whereas most xkcd comics are a bit perplexing at first glance (possibly obvious afterwards). I, for my attempts, attempt to emulate this quality. Either that or I just confuse people in general. Just ask my girlfriend. :x (But she helped muse this idea, so, also, blame her. ;) )

I understood the whole spoonplane crashing into twins thing, mirroring the non-spoon planes crashing into twins of the tower variety, I just don't get the punchline.

As for mine not being enigmatic enough, well, sorry. It was just an idea that popped into my head (while reading Buttersafe), and I happened to come across this thread today as well.

To be honest, I don't get the punchline to the twin towers thing either. What was the second twin supposed to have learnt?

I liked the correlation one though. I definitely don't think that most xkcd strips are perplexing at first glance (some are, and it generally correlates with things that I'm not that familiar with so takes me a minute to think about where he's coming from). The correlation one seems to be well within the spirit and style of the strip.

Here's my answer:

Spoiler:
When people feed toddlers, the toddler often makes it difficult by refusing to eat.

To combat this, the parent/guardian might play a game of make-believe, in which the babyfood is a train coming down the tracks and approaching the tunnel, or a car going towards a garage, or an airplane approaching the hangar.

This parent has twins and has opted for the airplane metaphor. Toddler #1 has decided not to open his/her mouth. Parent decides to simply let the babyfood hit the toddler's cheek rather than stop the spoon before it gets too close.

The second toddler is supposed to have learned that it's better to open your mouth and let your parent/guardian feed you, rather than stubbornly keeping your mouth shut.

Comic Deconstructed

Postby azule » Fri Sep 12, 2014 4:11 am UTC

Okay, time is now up, time to explain my comic.

Panel 1:
A shaky spoon flies through the air, zooming through the frame. When previewing the next panel, we know it to be a spoon, and it's most likely connected to a feeding. Therefore the airplane analogy is in play.

Panel 2:
The spoon plane makes impact. While it is carrying its payload, it instead crashes into the cheek of the face. Previewing the next panel we see that it is a young child, a toddler perhaps. As is common with toddlers, they don't eat nicely, often moving their heads at the last moment. This is the cause of the impact. The parent is not purposely shoving it into the cheek.

Panel 3:
Now we see that the child has a sibling. From the dialogue we see that it is the twin of the first. The second twin is awaiting its turn. The dialogue, from a person off screen, says that they hope the other twin has learned a lesson from 9/11. One of those lessons is that the second of the twins was also a target. In this case, the issue is simply a mess (not getting the food eaten). If a lesson could have been learned, it would have been to avoid getting hit, as mrob stated, by actually eating the food, or by ducking or blocking with hands.

Joke/Punchline:
The joke, lies in the absurdity of expecting a toddler, one that doesn't understand or care about political matters, to learn from an event such as this just because of that twin correlation. That any abstract understanding of how a plane crash could apply to toddlers would be beyond them.
