Shallow or deep?

Postby FierceContinent » Sun Mar 06, 2016 3:52 pm UTC

Would you rather live in a world where everything and everyone (including yourself) was beautiful but the people were jerks
or in a world where the people were kind but everything and everyone(including yourself) was ugly?
The greatest Science Hero is almost certainly Norman Borlaug. His selectively bred crops have saved many, many people from starvation.
Just to be clear, the number of lives Norman Borlaug is credited with saving is in the BILLIONS.

Kind but ugly. Avoids interacting with jerks. Negates theoretical gains from beauty.
Changes its form depending on the observer.

In general, I would go for kind over beautiful. But in a world where everyone is equally ugly or beautiful, the concept of beauty would have no value at all...

Although to be fair, living in a society where everyone is equally kind/jerkish would also be a world where those concepts are meaningless.

1 beauty is subjective .isn't it in the eye of the beholder anyway.

2 everyone 's beautiful! you're beautiful.

3 lists a bunch of reasons why you can't possibly be ugly.

people are often quick to prove you're beautiful , just one feature.

I already live in a world where nearly everyone who attempts to interact with me is a jerk, no matter how beautiful or ugly they are. I think they are scaring away all of the kind people.

Interesting point, I haven't thought about it. I think there's something about kindness that's more universal and less society-based, but I'm not sure I can articulate exactly what. I think it would be relatively easy for a person living in a harsh world imagining a life that's easier, where things are safer. On the other hand I don't think a person living in a world of clones/ugly people/blind people would be able to imagine a life that's more physically beautiful.

The former seems like a world with 100% less guilt. And probably a net gain over the present one.

If Kindness/Jerkiness has no meaning, I'd still rather live in a kind society as one where it's normal for people to help others and so on without considering it a big deal is still preferable to one where people are assholes to each other without considering it a big deal.

As for beauty/ugliness..... I dunno, some joke about how we're all pretty with the lights off or something.

I tend to change my perception of people's looks when I get to know them. The kind become more good looking, and the jerks become more bad looking, no matter what their 'base' level of attractiveness is.

So a kind but ugly world works out better for me, I think.
