"Twenty sixteen". I've even retrospectively started saying (e.g.) "twenty oh four", even though I didn't at the time.
And remember, my friends, future events such as these will affect you in the future.

"Twenty sixteen", but I still pronounce 200X as "two thousand and X".

I say all dates starting with twenty. Bill Clinton took office in Twenty Negative Seven.

2000 is trickier. I say "two thousand" and have heard it as such, but I can't help but think someone, somewhere has called it something really terrible sounding.

Oh and how about the decade? I've heard "noughties" which is weird

I usually say 20+16 not 2000+16 which is weird, because in my native language only the second option exists (years are handled like any other number would be, even for years like 1956). On the other hand, I use the other approach for years 2000-2009.
But I might switch to Sheikh al-Majaneen's approach or add 10 000 years to every date. Dates before common era always bothered me anyway.

Twenty sixteen. [The year] two thousand. Two thousand one. Sometimes/often twenty oh single-digit-non-zero-decimal-integer, (though thinking about it, "twenty oh eff" could be a fun way to find the true nerds.

Being on "social" media or following mainstream media too much combined with nostalgia.

On the whole, I think this year was pretty much the same as the past 15. Global wealth is still on the rise (not sure about global gini coefficient), whereas premature death (child mortality, war, illness, crime) and the climate are still declining.
Also not sure whether freedom/equality/safety and on the rise globally. It's still going forward in most of Europe as far as I can tell, but it seems to have come to a halt in the US and it seems to have gone backwards in places in the Middle-East and specific cases like Venezuela.

I think so. At the very least, it's hard for me to tell the difference between /ð/ and /θ/ at the beginnings of syllables (edit to add: I can if I listen closely to someone else talking), so I think they're at least the same phoneme there.

Edit to add:

For a lot of people it shows a very negative trend in global politics. I don't think that's a small thing. It's also something that directly impacts my personal life for the worse, and coming after eight years of fairly liberal US politics that positively impacted my life, that's not an unreasonable reaction. And I'm not unique in this regard.

Zohar wrote:Well, Trump and Brexit don't happen every year, either.

Brexit hasn't happened this year: it's only a referendum that leaned slightly towards "leave the EU" that happened this year. The government immediately chickened out of any action, neither following up on the outcome and intiate Article 50 nor rejecting the non-binding(!) referendum.
On the other hand, Trump didn't happen this year only: I've had to put up with (even my local) news media reporting echoing the memes ever since the summer of 2015, and this guy making it to presidency is more a result of decades of people getting more and more detached from politics and continuous polarisation. Maybe it's just me, but I see Trump as a symptom of an ill society; making him any more than that gives him too much credit and diverts the attention away from the polarisation and sensationalism that is hurting the US. And likewise a lot of other countries, like the Netherlands.

Wikipedia's list of 2016 includes a number of singular events that I would consider more significant, like Hissène Habré finally being sentenced to prison and the US and China ratifying the Paris Agreement.
And through one of my roommates I learned that the ever increasing tensions in Ethiopia between the government and the public (mostly ethnicities underrepresented in the government) resulted in protests and crackdowns thereof this year, further reinforcing government control through fear/force (including a full internet blackout). Indeed, Ethiopian politics don't echo throughout the world, but it still affects about 100 million people.
Also not on the list is the stupid decision by the Indian government to suddenly demonetise the 500 and 1000 notes, leading to e.g. a lot of farmers not being able to purchase seeds on time.
Hissène Habré (former president of Chad) finally being sentenced is great, especially because the ruling is backed by the African Union, hopefully sending out a lasting message that war crimes will be punished.

In my opinion, giving a lot of weight to negative singular events is not only unfair but also detrimental to both yourself and the world at large. Thinking the world goes to shit affects your outlook on life negatively and communicating a negative view to others (and vice versa) affects their outlook, too.
Well, except for me; I'm so contrarian I can only feel happy when someone says "FUCK THIS YEAR".

(Damn, there goes a whole day of looking up international politics, learning lots of trivia but virtually no better understanding of the state of the world. Also a lot of scrapping in this post to refrain from turning it into one big mess.)
somitomi wrote:What was the decade starting with 1910 called?

Did people speak of decades back then (or down to half a century ago, when the 1910s were still worth mentioning)? Cultural progress was going a lot slower at the time, no?

I've had a personally pretty good 2016. I went to the Very Large Telescopes and used their infrared interferometer and went back to the US for the first time in 14ish years.

However, the list of celebrities that have died this year are the kind that I either thought I was going to see perform at some point (David Bowie, Prince), those considered something of a national treasure so I kind of assumed that they would live forever (Terry Wogan, Ronnie Corbett, Victoria Wood), or personal heroes of mine (Carrie Fisher, Vera Rubin).

I also saw Brexit and Trumpism as symbols of a world that had significantly narrowed itself away from my kind of ideal of a more open and welcoming society, a free pass to racists/sexists/homophobes/etc and a rejection of intellectualism in favor of fearmongering. Sure, these things may have been coming for a while but they're a clear indicator of what the UK and US think is acceptable now.

For many people these singular events are eye-opening ones. Imagine you're with a partner for 20 years, and after 20 years discover suddenly your partner has cheated on you for the past decade. It's the 20th year that suddenly sucks, you didn't necessarily have a bad experience in the past 10.

I imagine a lot of people feel similarly about Trump and Brexit. Yes, those are singular events, but they symbolize a lot more. However, it should be noted that both the vote on Brexit and the elections, (as opposed to actual Brexit and the inauguration) have already had a profound impact on people's lives, and it's not very kind to dismiss people's experiences. On my part, for instance, in addition to substantial increased anxiety, Trump's win means we're not going to buy an apartment in the US for an entire year, until we know if my green card will be successfully renewed. That means a year of hundreds of thousands of dollars stagnating and not invested in the economy. I'm sure we're not the only ones freezing any big financial decisions because of it, either.
