I think I need to stop smoking.

OK I smoke yes I know it's a bad habbit but I have only today realised how bad I have goten in the last year or so, but first a little back story.

I am 24 but I have been smoking since I was 11, I started at secondary school and then it was just one or two a day but I now smoke at average on a work day 40 of the things a day, but today brought it home to me that infact I smoke much more than that. Today I have a odd Monday off and I woke up at 4:30am second thing I did was reach for a pack of smokes and bummer I was out so i get dressed put the collar on the dog and walk down to the local petrol station and pick up some smokes, I get home bath the dog and eat some food then sit my self down in front of my computer by this time it's about 6am and I have had about 5 or 6 cigarettes. Fast forward about 4 hours -

I am still sitting in front of my computer but I only have 2 cigarettes left, and it's just hit me in the last 5 hours I have had 18 cigarettes and I am only part way though the day, I don't want to end up like my dad who had smoked 60 a day for about 35 years and have a massive heart attack by the time I am 55 partly due to smoking.

So has any one quit or at least heavily cut down and can give me tip's? I tried last year as a bet to do cold turkey and lasted about 4 hours and then tried patches and ended up wearing 4 of them and still smoking after a few hours. I have heard of a new treatment called Champic that can help you stop but I know no one who has used it so comments on that would be greatly appreciated.

I can't give any specific tips, having never smoked myself, but the fact that you want to, and are asking for help is already commendable and gets a big glowing double-thumbs-up of encouragement. Keep trying. You can do it! :D

Have you tried talking to your Doctor? They could possibly point you in the right direction.

I'm also pro talking with your doctor. Hospitals and clinics often have smoke cessation programs that are evidence based (i.e. shown through scientific research to actually have an impact). I don't have suggestions of my own as I've never smoked, but good luck! Seek help, maybe try a support group? For me, mutual accountability is very helpful in these sorts of things.

Support groups work best, at least they do for me. Also, paying someone to punch yoi really hard for each cig you had that day.

One of the best ways to kick a habit is to context switch. Move apartments. Change where you walk your dog. Change your route to work, or take the bus instead of your car. Change the habits you associate with smoking, one at a time, slowly reducing the number of habits you allow yourself to smoke during, and eventually you kick it.

Replacing habits with a different habit is also very effective. Chewing gum can be better, especially if you start with nicotine gum, or cracking open a fizzy water, or something.

The way I did it works as follows.

Step 1. Find someone you strongly believe you have more willpower than.

Step 2. Get them to start smoking if they don't already.

Step 3. Convince them to quit smoking cold turkey.

Step 4. Quit cold turkey. After all, if that asshole can, so can you.

Step 5. Stop talking to them or being in a position where you can observe them for at least six months. See the second sentence of step 4.

Ta daaaa. That's how I did it. That the guy started smoking almost a day or two after I did is something I didn't learn for something like six months later. So I spent six months thinking this guy was still not smoking and so... I didn't pick it up again. Because fuck that guy, I'm better than him.

Persistence is the key. Keep trying and don't get discouraged if at first you don't succeed. Some things you can try. When at your computer leave your cigarettes somewhere else so that you have to go to them. This creates mindfulness of the habit. Ditto when walking the dog. Don't hang around people who smoke, in places where they can exercise the habit. Marry a women or man who will ban you from smoking in the house.

Realize that the desire for nicotine is an actual, physical addiction. Kicking that habit is hard-I've seen tracheotomy patients smoking through their stoma underneath the big No Smoking signs at the hospital. Almost any aid you use will be an improvement over smoking. So don't get depressed if you need several attempts, this is NOT a moral failing on your part.
If you like quick rewards name yourself a star chart like you had in grade school-cut down number of cigs, get a prize, two days with no smokes, get a bigger prize, etc. Being able to see progress helps.
Having a substitute for the physical object can be useful-a short dowel, pencil, etc.
Wanting to quit and being willing to keep doing it is the most important step.

We're just ignoring that the OP is clearly a spambot, then?

I don't believe we were ignoring it. The OP was originally a not entirely horribly written request for assistance with the topic in the title, which folks started attempting to give legitimate advice on.

Once El Spamerino figured that they were past the scrutiny of mods, they then edited their OP to spammy spammingness. However, the mods have already caught on to this -- if you hover over the links from Skateboard McSkateboardface, you will notice that they all redirect to a super anti-skateboarding site. "Last edited" on the OP is from a moderator prior to your post, so presumably they're just letting the topic stand as modified by them. Unless they're still coming to a decision on that matter. Though the OP is no longer on topic, the rest of the responses (aside from yours and mine) are.

Personally, I find myself fascinated that "[s]cientists inside the California Institute of Technology now discovered a totally new planet located 875 trillion miles from earth. Apparently, the Nhl had been thinking about creating a franchise there." I believe this to be a very unsound decision on the part of the NHL -- I mean, just think of the travel costs. They'll make tickets cost at least $4 more than they already do.

I was thoroughly confused when I went and reread the OP's post. I was thinking "this is entirely different than what I remember". Oh well, everybody still gave great advice!

I've been checking this post almost once a day, waiting for OP to edit it.

Why hadn't you reported it?

Fascinating. I had no prior knowledge of this method of spamming. What else are they up to these days?

Great! When it gets hard, remember that whatever day it is, you just have to do it for today. That will help you get past some of the cravings. Also, stay away from smokers; they'll bring you back down.

After a while it will get easier.

You eat your cigarettes?

Smoking for me is like how easily I can fall for a girl if she shows me any affection.

Smoking for me is like pissing on somebody else's living room carpet. It's filthy, smelly, unhealthy, inconsiderate, egocentric, and contemptuous of others. The "habit" part is an excuse and easy to overcome - just put your cigarettes in a new location, which will remind you of what you're doing. After that it's a conscious choice, and no longer a habitual one. It's not a "habit", it's a drug addiction which negatively affects everyone around you. (It's killing you slowly too, but that's not my issue.)

I totally support your stopping smoking, and if it means eating cigarettes for a while, so be it. :)

Have you ever quit smoking after being addicted, that you're so certain it's simple to quit?

Zohar wrote:Have you ever quit smoking after being addicted, that you're so certain it's simple to quit?
No, I've never smoked, but I know people who have. I'm not saying quitting is simple or easy.

I'm saying it's not a "habit". Yes, it's habitual, but that's not what keeps smokers smoking (otherwise it would be easy to quit).

The addiction is the hard part. From what I've heard and seen, the first several weeks (of withdrawal) are the hardest. After that, it's mostly a matter of maintaining a supportive environment and avoiding triggers, but in this world that's hard to do. Hence my comment about staying away from smokers, and my own gesture of support. But ultimately the support has to be very local to be most effective.

I think you would do well to avoid comments about how easy it is or isn't to do these things on which you don't have experience or particular knowledge.

I am from india , this is what i used to smoke daily .

Image

I still cannot smoke one cigarette completely without a tendency to puke

that thing called beedi , is a lighter than cigarette .

i used to smoke a pack daily , 15 . It was addictive . I felt too dull without it , your brain sort of felt like it was expanding and contracting when you didn't have one of those . my throat used to dry up , i sort of cured that craving with nicotex chewing gum . it really helps fix that drying up feeling in the throat .

Now looking for ways to detox my lungs with proper food , juice , ayurvedic stuff etc

Either chewing on my fingernails is an addiction, or cigarette are - among other things - a habit.

I've only recently stopped feeling strange about not lighting up when I get in a car to drive.

I haven't smoked in 12+ years.

I was - still may be - completely conditioned to feel like lighting up is a natural response to certain activities - finishing a meal, sex, getting in the driver's seat of a car and so on. Shit's a habit.

The only thing that will help your lungs is quitting and time. When I quit I was smoking three packs a day. Roughly 4 cigarettes an hour.

Well, I do have particular knowledge. It's just not first-hand knowledge. Some of it is close second-hand knowledge. If you are suggesting that people not speak of things of which they have no first-hand knowledge, most discussion would stop.

(Well, it wouldn't actually stop, but it should to follow your suggestion).

SecondTalon wrote:...getting in the driver's seat of a car and so on. Shit's a habit.
There's a habit aspect to it, sure. But it's not just a habit, which was my point. If it's just a habit, stopping would be as easy as interrupting the unconscious act and letting your conscious mind decide what to do. If it's not that easy, then there's more to it than habit. Do you disagree?

I "waltzed in" and offered support for monkey3's decision to quit, and some encouragement.

That encouragement also happened to be based on the firsthand experiences of people I know who have quit smoking. That was all.

If your main concern is your lungs, have you considered a vaporizer? Your lungs will only heal if you quit smoking, and if you have trouble quitting entirely you might consider it as a less unhealthy alternative to smoking.

Ponder how exactly that comes across to people who have or are currently dealing with said addiction. If you still don't get it, I'll explain it in PM.

This was in response to lighthearted comments on "what smoking means...", as if it didn't affect other people in any meaningful way (which is a very common attitude from smokers I know first hand.) Please, use context.

But in any case, I'll no longer comment here. I'm sorry if you're upset.

Hey everyone, new here. I'm on day 35 not smoking. Feels like a lot longer than that. The last cigarette I had was pretty grim. I didn't even finish it. My first 2 weeks were pretty easy since then it feels like it's getting harder and harder and more excusable to have one. I thought after a month it would be a lot easier. Nope. As time goes on I find myself having to hold my breath walking past a smoker because the smell is just too inviting!! I know it will always be difficult to a degree... but how long will this hunger last?? I refuse to let myself buy a pouch - thankfully now it's so expensive even drunk me turns up a nose at it. But I feel like if someone offered me one... I wouldn't say no!! I don't want to ruin my run but my goodness would I love a cigarette!!! :(

In my experience? Two years before it becomes disgusting to smell, but the six month mark was when it started to get easier. But honestly, if you can do one month, you can do six. If you can do six months, you can do the rest of your life.

Hang in there.

In the book Holes, Stanley Yelnats is told that the first hole he digs is the hardest. Then the next day, he is told the second is the hardest. So each day he starts by saying x is the hardest. Until one day he is thinking the 67th (or whatever number it is) is the hardest, but realizes that in fact it is no longer the hardest.

I think that with each coming day, it will feel harder than the previous until one day, it sneaks up on you without you realizing that it is no longer as hard. Good luck!

To anyone reading this, new here. It has been 42 days since I tried to quit smoking. Feels like a lot longer than that. The thing is that with the passage of time, my patience of not getting to addicted to cigarettes again is saturating day by day. Don't know why it all is happening with me. My doctor has told that it is normal. You know I have tried quitting smoking before too, and I know the amount of time/days I took off of smoking, once I get back to it somehow, I smoke hell lot of cigarettes. Why? Can anyone tell me to permanently quit it. TIA, Steve.
